Unit Requests: Steampunk

Blue Monkey... I think that Cool unit would not be too difficult. The Model could be made invisible or translucent and just animate showing the Clothes. IF a Fade in or out is desired, that would be easier to do manually. IF anyone wants to know how to accomplish the invisible Body parts, just make Transparency Maps for them as wanted for use.

I have sent Balthasar a PM concerning the TARDIS. I can take the time to make that unit if it will help out but I have postponed getting back to animating a difficult Giant Hornet I started for EFZI2 quite a while ago  I must get that Game completed and there is still much more to accomplish.

Note... the TARDIS should be set with "Paradrop" settings for its Teleport and as for Other Units being Teleported with it, set the TARDIS as a Transport for the number of units it can Teleport as desired. The Teleport animation (Paradrop) will show the TARDIS Materializing where Teleported on the Map. The Distance can be easily set in Conquest.
The AI will not use any "Land Transport" so only the Human Player can take advantage of "Teleporting" other Units in the TARDIS but the AI will use the "Teleport" if set as a Paradrop for the unit. That at least is better than the AI not Teleporting the Unit at all if the Teleport is used as discovered in the Editor.

Cavorite Sphere
In the film the cavorite panels glow in-flight & are controlled by louvred blinds. The landing is by a rough tumble - the main reason for the use of rail car bumpers.

I've just received this note from Vuldacon:

I am E-Mailing you from a friends Computer.

My Computer is Shot due to getting the Last Critical Microsoft Update,
KB906714. This update Corrupted my Systems32 and all hive files to the
point that I have to start from scratch with a New Hard Drive.

I am tacking this time to install the XP 64 System since I have to start
over.

I will be in touch with you After I manage to get back Up and Running.
Hope not long...probably at least a week depending on when I receive the
New Hardware.

I have Backup copies of everything so No Loss I hope.

Please let anyone else know that I am temporarily Off Line until
Rebuilding my Computer.

I will get back to making the TARDIS when I get my new computer Running.

Cheers,

Well you know you're having a bad day when your homework eats itself.

Heh, the Doctor is a good idea. I think the eighth Doctor is pretty Steampunky too, although of course the fourth is more iconic.
I've had a chance to see more images of the 8th Doctor. I have to agree, he's the steampunk. In fact, I'd love to see his tool kit in person. Unfortunately the only dvd available is a region 2 PAL format. :(

On another note, I'd like to remind anyone working on units to have fun with them! One thing that has been discussed in our various PMs is the ornate style of the vehicles & some other units that it would be nice to see. Here's a little inspiration:

And if you're ready for something really wild think about the civ-color on this baby:

Don't let the Harry Turtledove guys see that tricked-out zeppelin. In a minute it will have headers and a mud-flap girl on the fin with the words "Born to Float".....
If some of the talent from the HT crew spread our way I wouldn't object at all.

Unfortunately the only dvd available is a region 2 PAL format. :(

If you're watching DVDs on your computer you can download programs that will make it effectively multi-region. I believe that when watching DVDs on computers, the region problem is the only one you need worry about, and the PAL/NTSC thing doesn't matter (why must America use non-standard systems for almost everything? NTSC, 110-120 volts, imperial, driving on the right...).

I know that I have a setup that can handle various regions, but I thought the PAL/NTSC was still a problem. I'll look into that.

If we were to concede that there can be only one standard wouldn't the first take priority? I will agree PAL is superior for clarity of picture, etc., but NTSC preceded PAL by about a decade. The voltage for mains supply traces back to the first systems built under Edison's supervision. On the other hand, driving on the right developed because of a difference in the position of teamsters driving carts in the US vs. Europe. 3 cases of later adopters changing standards for practical reasons. As to the "English system" of weights & measures, I guess someone has to carry the torch for the Empire. :p

An anecdote I used to tell my programmers:

The standard European railway gauge is what it is because that was the standard width of horse-drawn carriages.

The width of horse-drawn carriages was derived from ruts of wheel indentations made by medieval carts (and earlier and later) in Roman roads.

So the European rail gauge derives from the work of Roman engineers 2,000 years ago who could no more imagine a railroad than an airplane.

Amused,

Oz

It's even better than that. In the US railway gauge is also based on wagon axle width. There is a railway tunnel through the Rocky Mountains that is the only way that certain large heavy items can be shipped between the west & east coasts. For various reasons the external booster engines on the space shuttle had to be built on the west coast, so their maximum diameter was limited by what would fit through the tunnel. so the shuttle design & performance is determined by decisions made by Roman chariot builders. I guess there's a reason Kubrick had that ape toss a satellite. O n T

Postscript: While talking to my brother on the phone, since posting, about Xmas plans, he reminded me that the width of chariot axles was determined by the proportions of the draft animals. It's no wonder that our space program is in its current shape - since it depends on the size of a horse's a**.

Dr. Mabuse
Mabuse, like Caligari, mesmerized those around him. He could change his appearance. I'm not sure how well the stare would come across at unit scale. Perhaps some kind of projecting energy from his eyes or hands?

Tharks & Orovars
A Barsoomian (Martian) "civilization".

Tharks are huge, four-armed, savage barbarians.

There is a multi-armed pose & setup map set for V4 (toward the bottom of the linked page) that may be of some use in creating Tharks.

That winged man is quite cool,.. hope someone does that. And i'd really want to see some steampowered humanoid robots too.
