New ign.com Preview (10/23)

Whoa! Great article! :goodjob: I'm keeping a running notebook here...

-cities on rivers require no aqueduct!
-wheeled units can't go over mountains unless on a road
-you can irrigate anywhere with the discovery of electricity
-

Some quick thoughts:

"Armies at the gates" http://pcmedia.ign.com/media/previews/image/aciv3025.jpg
Nice, another army shot. Hey, anyone else notice that it is 1940 AD and the army consists of Legions!? Huh? Most of the shots contain Cavalry as the strongest unit... is this some ssssslllllooooowwww tech research or what?

"Smart advisor" http://pcmedia.ign.com/media/previews/image/aciv3016.jpg
VERY cool - finish what you're doing and then build whatever is needed for growth. Yummy!

"The Military Advisor" http://pcmedia.ign.com/media/previews/image/aciv3005.jpg
Notice one of the captured units is a barbarian? Cool! And unit upgrades can be performed right from the advisor screen. More coolness! As long as we have a larger world map in this pic, those continents look outstanding.

THE PANZER!!!

Thanks stuie! PC.IGN really knows how to take good screenshots. :goodjob:

Sweet!!!

And all the civ's unit's! We pretty much knew them all, but still nice to have it layed out :)

7 LONG DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

And new details!

"One thing that they can't do anymore is irrigate land without a fresh supply of water. Cities along the coast had better also be near a river or lake or inland sea if you want them to grow quickly. "

!

Here is a list of new info from the preview:

What's new:

Certain units and units in fortresses can take opportunity fire on passing enemy units.

Once you discover electricity you can irrigate anywhere.

Cities built next to rivers don't need aqueduct to grow beyond a certain size.

Mountains and jungles are off limits to wheeled units unless they are traveling on a road.

You can no longer run around buying up enemy cities. Instead you'll have to trade with your rivals to gain control of their cities. The AIs set a pretty high price on their own cities.

You can only trade with rival civilizations if your capital is connected to theirs by a road (or harbor or airport).

Once a wonder is built somewhere in the world you must change the production orders of any other city that's building that same wonder. (i.e. Can't have four cities still building Bach's Cathedral after it's been completed)

Leaders are sometimes created after an elite unit of yours achieves a victory. The leaders are all specific to your civilization (the Romans get Trajan or Hadrian while the Americans get Washington). They only come up about four times in a game.

You can still zoom in or zoom out the map!

PC.IGN promised to post an official review of Civ3 early next week!

PS: Stuie, the links in your second post don't work.

Stuie: the links didn't work. It said the server couldn't find them. Did I do something wrong?
From the screenshots it looked like irrigation was difficult to see. And zooming to the city seems to take more than 1 click. It also talked about rivers impeding movement. So does that mean you can't use them so speed you up if you travel along them? Also I'm wondering if I can switch to another program withough using alt-tab? In civ2 It was helpful to see the screen at the same time as something else.

Wow, GREAT FIND TF!! :) :D

Trading details! Very sweet.

In the first shot (19), it appears as if it was just captured, and there's 4 very unhappy citizens!

(and beating apolyton too, nice! :) )

I guess this means you don't have your copy yet :(

I like that :D

Mountains and jungles are off limits to wheeled units unless they are traveling on a road.
That'll make the game a lot more interesting :D

Can't wait to have that game :D

On the Lyons screen show the 6-size city with one working tile, 4-food needed for survive and 20 food in box required for growth! It must be 2-size city! Who can explain that? Is it result of city capture?

Looking at the screenshots, is neone slightly worried at how dominant the human player seems to be, owning bout 1/2 the landmass+apparently only 2/3 thru game?. I really hope they're playin on a low level, otherwise no mp might be worse than expected. Also noones mentioned the ability to change which tech ur researching at ne time (i assume w/o loss of 'beakers'), an interesting change!

I believe that happens when you capture a city, the evil french people you captured don't work till they are assimilated by your culture (nationality). On the bright side, they don't seem to eat either.

No. He's probably playing on Chieftain (or whatever ever the lowest level is called). At that level, the game "cheats" for the human, so anyone that has played as much Civ as the reviewer purports to have played is bound to kick some butt.

As anyone noticed that there are missing some units in that image, like the Submarines or are they hidden under the sea and we can't see them!!

The Bombardment feature is very cool! :D

I'm was really looking forward to have that feature in Civilization since i saw it in CTP!! Can't wait to grab my copie and bombard my enemies!!:rocket3:
