GDC 2022, Soren Johnson: My Elephant in the Room: An 'Old World' Postmortem

I didnt watch it yet. But I read the title "Post Mortem" Does that mean that he considers Old World finished, and move on to his next game ? Or maybe it is just the title that the youtuber for that site choose.

    Let's talk buildings

One reason why you shouldnt build many buildings is because it is easy to not have a gameplan and only build buildings and press end of turn. You have to realise that because of the bonuses the ai gets it will only get stronger if you sit on your but and build buildings and press end of turn. So...

Old World Monthly Challenge - September 22 - Writeups

Why is Old World currently sitting on "mixed" ratings on Steam?

I think the reason is that Old World is doing combat differently than what players are used to. In most 4X games you use your units to defend your cities and you keep the units in the front. But if you do that in Old World all your units will die first turn when the AI attacks and then they quit...

How do you play in terms of tech trading?

I use to have tech trading on, I think that was how the designers wanted the game to be played. And yes the first thing I do EVERY turn is to press F4 and see what trades there are.

What are people's thoughts on the Money yield?

I like that most resources can be exchanged. With laws you can exchange most resources. So it doesnt make sense to discuss money alone. You need to discuss if moneys exchangerate for goods/resources/services is good. I think it is in a good spot now. If you have too much resources you should...

    Luxury Trading Seems Very Basic

Take civ 4 as an example. If you watch a lets play of an experienced player, the first thing they do every turn is to check what they can trade and will probably make some deal every turn.

    The Market Line (Balance Discussion)

You are missing that you can assign specialists to them. The science from urban specialists is worth alot, especially with freedom.

    Luxury Trading Seems Very Basic

I like that you cant trade them with other civs. Brokering deals with ai every turn are probably the most boring thing in civ.

My Old World Experience, 2-Weeks In

Actually how you plan you defense is more important in Old World than other 4x. If you have not planned with fortified units on forts and cities, then when the opponent attacks they will wipe out alot of your army. Other 4x are more forgiving with positioning. It is a deliberate design choice to...

My Old World Experience, 2-Weeks In

You will learn to handle the barbarians soon. My tips is to attack them with some units. Generals and promotions are very important in old world because of orders. So spend time to equip generals and spend your training on promotions and then upgrade the units.

    Laws (Balance)

Fluffy made a video were he discussed the laws he think is best. Watch that it differs abit from your opinion. I think vassalage is better than centralization. Serfdom is better than colonies. So there are two laws were we think the opposite. That shows laws are fairly balanced right now...

The Supposed Reason for Having City-Sites Doesn't Really Fly

You can play the premade Old World Map, it is larger, giving you easily 6-15 cities. If you clear a camp, definatly camp it until you get a settler there. You can also abuse the AI and try to get the last hit on a camp they are clearing

Win a copy of "Old World" - tell us about your favourite civ from "the old world" (contest is over)

My favorite civ is Israel/ Judah. I read the bible and it has very good stories. Cool to see that all the other civs in old world interacts and conquer Jerusalem at different time period but the jewish civilization remains even if they are slaves in Egypt or Babylon or Persia.. They always come...

Do you want an AI that can make reasoned choices?

Would be nice if ai had different settings. You could have peaceful ai like it is now. And if you wanted you could have an ai more focused on military. Even on diety watching lets plays and playing myself ai often has almost zero units. Which is a big difference from other civ and 4x games were...

Do you want an AI that can make reasoned choices?

Main problem is that ai doesnt build enough units

Orders make possible so many far movements and surprise attacks?

Most buildings are built by a worker like in civ 6 and take up a tile with a 3D model.
