Just posting to tell anyone who might find this thread who has similar problems that I've solved the art issue - when creating dds files for civ it is vital that you save them in RGB format, when using GIMP this can be done from the Format dropdown menu while saving.

I really, really admire his work as a biologist. I've got all of his books on the subject. But when it comes to going on and on about religion? Meh. Doesn't appeal. Let people live how they want, that's what I say. (This is as an Atheist/Agnostic)
