Thats not what I found. If you have the tech to do the full chain of units (eg Archer to Pikeman to Rifleman to...) they fully upgrade to the latest. I've had my opening warriors upgrade to tanks with the workshop and catapults to Artillery, and this is on deity.

I found that archers tend not to upgrade into Rifleman unless you could build pikemen as well. So if you get Leonardos Workshop after Gunpowder but before Democracy they won't upgrade. Not sure if this happens with other strands of units.

Joined the 1000 points club now, this being the first 360 game since owning the machine at launch I've ever bothered trying to get all 1000. Last one was the 200 production in a single turn which I did with ease (though at length) with the Americans.

I have a safe file just before i won the pre 1000ad domination acheivment and looking forward to exploring the world on my own, keeping the last rival city under seige as I populate the world. Hopefully I might get the 200 Resource acheivment from it.
