    SMACX strategy update 2024

HI there. I started playing SMACX again heavily (with Thinker mod). I haven't played SMAC basically since uni, so 20 years or so. Learned to be more patient and detailed, so I'll keep this thread open for my observations regarding better strategies that I discover over time. Topic 1: Population...

The "Expanded OCC" and it's negative effect on measuring the effectiveness of buildings and corporations

I think it would be fair to say that the developers of Civ4 gave us plenty of options on how to play this game. Over the years, as we, the players, learned the game and it's mechanics, combined with the fact that the development on this game ceased a long time ago, meant that certain strategies...

Is there a way we could enable Levees for lakes?

Hi there. This one has been bugging me for a long time. Netherlands has the ability to build a dike. Levee replacement that works on lake and coastal tiles, alongside the usual riverside tiles, providing+1 production on each. No need pointing out how insanely powerful this is during golden ages...

    Will Civ7 be a diamond?

I really wish for Civ 7 to be designed as a generic game. Like crystals, grown from a single atom to a structure, from a single idea to a full game. Created with carbon vapor put under pressure of creative minds at Firaxis to grow a diamond. To have no Civilization brand to uphold an image, no...

[LP] Communist Tokugawa – all roads lead to Tokyo!

Well, that escalated quickly! My strategy so far is this: - Dedicate two cities that can grow tallest as internal trade route destinations. Usually Tokyo and Nagoya. - These cities should have the maximum number of speciality districts possible (in my case, Tokyo has 7). Great Engineer Bi...

Strategies for Heroes & Legends, or why Maui can be really good

Let me preface by saying that I've been introducing game modes very slowly into my games. Currently I'm at Barbarians, Corporations and Heroes & Legends. So no sinergies for other modes yet, sorry. :-/ I also play excusively on non-deity, however I do think most of these strategies apply to any...

    Power creep & leader abilities

It's no secret by now that Civilization 6 maps can be(come) a rich place. Volanoes, forest fires, natural wonders, monopolies... Take your pick. Put the disaster level to 3 and off it goes. Add mid-game trade routes into the mix (most powerful yields by far) and yields explode. My question, or...

[BTS] Shale Plant works without coal

I just wanted to mention it here, because it gets always overlooked by AZ, Lain and Henrik: :goodjob: Over the coal plant, the Shale plant provides additional 10% production and it requires no coal to operate. It's one of those UBs bonuses that's "completely irrelevant, or really useful"...

From a "monument placement simulator" to a game – Evolution of Civ6

Firaxis, you confuse me. Do you know how to create great games or not? Because you've certainly proven that you can. So what's the deal? Why the hesitation? First, let me explain my insight. Acquired through the last three decades of my contact with computer games, and Sid's games in...

    Caguana Batey

I found a recent map that I decided to play over and over again. And it features caguana. I’d argue its the best city state to befriend for a science victory (and perhaps cultural too). My Batey strategy is to focus on campuses and entertainment complexes for off-production cities and use...

Firaxis at 30, I'm celebrating 15 on civfanatics – final thoughts on Civ6 and the future

For better or for worse, computer games have been a niche entertaniment in global society. Very rarely, games like Angry Birds or World of Warcraft capture the imaginations of a broader audience. Compared to sitcoms, global artists, however, it's truly a miniscule percentage of global population...

    Plastics question

Does anyone know if building an oil rig in allied city state count for a plastics boost? Never tried it but if yes, this could be huge for my oil-starved games. Never occured to me until now that this might work.

What civ4 has to say on civ6

“A [game] designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away”. - Tech quote for Engineering.

Gaelic district placement is a bit sketchy

As per title, its not easy to pull off. One or two districts are not an issue, but more than that... hm... I would’ve much peferred disincentiving placement near city centre as per Seowon, but allow doing it when needed. Any good tips? Offtopic: I’d trade 1 culture on mines for 1 food any day :)

Don’t settle near me, Six Sky edition

Classical era, small map. Lady Six Sky conquers a city 15 tiles from her capital, solid 10 tiles from her other nearest city, some 6 tiles from my cities. Theeathens me not to encroach on her lands or else. I open up the research tree and click gunpowder. I just felt like sharing

I managed to break a 400 PPT barrier on space projects

I don't know if it's good or bad, but it's a personal record, with Trajan. Small map, suzerain of 5 city states, turn 235. Here's the breakdown of yields in Rome, wtih max Magnus slotted: +89 from outgoing trade routes +26 from districts (+18 from Industrial zone, +8 from Heartbeat of Steam...
