When do you decide to move up in difficulty?

I think it really depends on what you are planning to do in a game. I usually play on Immortal now; it's a nice challenge but I can usually win. I don't really feel like moving up to Deity though because I feel it would force me to be more rigid in my play-style, and I'd have less fun...

How should i plan on using Rome as a civ?

I'm just playing a game where I opened Tradition first, took the one that gives you the free culture building (and prioritised the tech that gives you the amphitheatre to take advantage) and then the one that gives you the growth boost in the capital. The reason was partly historical (Rome...

How is this game beat on harder difficulties!?!?!

IMHO, the key things are 1) don't neglect your military even while focusing on other things, 2) sell excess resources, 3) build the national college asap, and 4) research agreements With these everything up to and including King should be fairly easy. For the higher levels I find you...

Cultural victory - better with or without religion?

Absolutely - but this is exactly my point. Yes you can get very cheap shrines / temples with the Piety opener, but you can't really afford to wait that long if you want an early religion!

Cultural victory - better with or without religion?

I'm currently playing for a cultural victory as the Byzanthines (Emperor difficulty), and thought I'd tried to use religion to maximum effect, meaning I focused on generating some faith early, ended up being the second to found a religion, and selected several culture boosting beliefs...

    What Are "Worthy" Deity Settings?

Slightly off topic, but: is there a quick way to re-roll your start? (I mean other than quitting and starting a new game with the same settings?)

The Benefits of Liberating a Civ?

They do tend to be friendly, but if they've been out of the game for any significant amount of time, they're usually so weak that the other AIs just see them as easy prey. Kind of frustrating to liberate an AI, become friends with it, just to see your other friend attack and annihilate them in...

    Austria is damn strong

How about either making the cost depend on the era (more expensive as time goes by) - similar to Research Agreements? And/or only allowing Diplomatic Marriage until the Industrial Era? Seems kind of realistic, as monarchy doesn't really matter much anymore in the Modern Era and beyond.

    Austria is damn strong

Does anyone know - if you attack and take over an Austrian ex city state that they've married into, do you have the option of liberating it so it becomes independent again?

Tales of Religion - my experiments with some in game combos.

I think there's still a bit of an issue with people spreading religion for its own sake (probably because it's a cool new feature). This can actually be counterproductive in some cases. So if you load up on beliefs that make it easier to spread your religion, make very sure it's worth it (e.g...

    Did the difficulties drop -1?

This is my experience too (actually started a thread on it last week). Emperor seems ridiculously easy now, and you are right, the huge happiness bonuses you can get from religion and mercantile city states have a lot to do with it.

Has the game become easier with G&K?

Heck, I understand that the AI struggles with amphibious invasions (although I thought this had been improved), but I settled on other islands right under the Incas' and Huns' noses, practically begging for a DOW, and still, nothing!

Has the game become easier with G&K?

I usually play on Emperor, since I like to have some flexibility in terms of play style. I find Immortal and especially Deity too much of a straitjacket... Anyway, I've played 3-4 games of G&K now, all on Emperor, and found them all extremely easy to win. I don't do anything special, except...

Various Thoughts on Freedom, Autocracy and Order

Not true. Think of how the Soviet government enforced resistance during the siege of Leningrad. It's unthinkable that a democratic government would have expected the same level of sacrifice from its citizens, or employed the brutal methods needed to achieve that sacrifice.

I just realized I passed the 500 hour mark...

I've played just over 300 hours. But guys, let's not fool ourselves: this forum is called CivFANATICS for a reason - it's for fanatics! Just because most people around here are as addicted as you are, doesn't make it any less worrying. Case in point: Guess what percentage of gamers has the...

Fun with Ottomans - Using the Barb Navy

All right, that explains it - thanks! I kept pulling up next to the same 2 or 3 ship about 20 times, and thinking "this can't be right". So it's pull up, if it doesn't convert immediately sink it, and try again with the next ship?

Fun with Ottomans - Using the Barb Navy

You have to KILL IT? Didn't someone else post the exact opposite earlier - i.e. move next to it, DON'T kill it? So which one is it? When I put one of my caravels on auto-explore, it somehow inadvertently converted a couple of galleys to my side... but how, I have no idea. I don't think it...

Fun with Ottomans - Using the Barb Navy

There must be something I'm not getting. HOW EXACTLY DO YOU GET A BARBARIAN SHIP TO JOIN YOU? I've now tried at least 20 times to just move one of my triremes right next to a barbarian galley - but nothing ever happens. Do I have to stay parked next to it or move away? I've tried both...

Lessons I learned: a noob playing OCC...

All good points and important to figure out during early play. Two additional points though: - If you wanted a fast cultural victory, you should have gone for Piety instead of Rationalism. It lets you finish social policies much quicker, although on the higher difficulty levels it can mean...

How can you use air units (be they stealth bombers or others) to scout enemy terrain without attacking them? Is there a way?
