[RD] Russia Invades Ukraine: The 7th Thread Itch; scratch it here!

Wiki indicates that by the eighth year of the Iran-Iraq war, Iraq was spending upwards of half of its GDP on the war.

Israel may very well be committing genocide, but it makes your argument weaker when you substitute in words like "removal" rather than sticking with commonly accepted terms.

What is the acronym OAS for? Google is of no help. (Assuming you’re not referring to Old Age Security or the Organization of American States.)

What are some good history/geopolitics Youtube Channels?

Shamefully, last time I checked, even if you pay for Hardcore History, you still get ads. Sadly there doesn't seem to be any straightforward way to filter for ad-free podcasts.

Iran, the Red Sea, and the West (tm).

That's one possibility. Or it might just reshape the way students cheat, the way SEO spam bubbles to the top, the way lawyers invent legal citations, and the way marketing drivel is generated. With a possibility for exterminating humanity between those.

I don't see any way you can reasonably get to that metric; since WW2 wiki lists the results of armed conflicts involving the US as 3 inconclusive, 7 defeats, 5 ongoing, 17 victories. Any filter that doesn't count any of the victories is going to leave you with basically no armed conflicts. e.g...

I tried to do the math on this a few weeks ago but didn't get to a satisfactory answer. Civilian death rates in Syria have varied greatly over time, so you'd need something like a "deaths per months" record for a useful comparison.

Yeah, so pretty tangential, but, it depends... 0º C is not very cold, when it's actually cold, like -30º, heat pumps work at basically 100% electric->heat efficiency, so if the electric base load is natural gas plants running at 60% gas->power efficiency, you're better off heating with 95+%...

Wait what's "conventional air conditioning"? Central AC units and cooling-only mini splits are effectively the same hardware as heat pumps except the heat pump models include a reversing valve.

Certainly the perceived morality, but the hypocrisy doesn't change the actual nature of the actions; in the same way, an arsonist being vocally anti-arson doesn't weaken the case against lighting people's homes on fire.

DC fans are very efficient, but DC fans at the low end of the market don't really exist, so hefty premium on them. My DC ceiling fans from Costco are in the 256 CFM/W range. A crushingly efficient form of cooling is simply a DC-powered window fan equipped with a HEPA filter and a thermostat so...

It doesn't seem like they've made a ruling on genocide other than specifying that today's ruling doesn't prejudice them on the eventual ruling on the genocide allegation. From BBC, they've made rulings on several provisioning measures: Israel must take all measures to prevent any acts that...

    Housing, Homelessness and Poverty

It's awful for tenants in general, but if you're a tenant who chooses to stop paying rent and ignore an eviction order, you have a lot of power over your landlord because it can take years for the landlord and tenant board to take any action.

    Housing, Homelessness and Poverty

In places where this is the case while there's a housing shortage, the result is still unsatisfactory for most tenants. e.g. Cash for keys: Some tenants who face eviction demand thousands from landlords amid tribunal delays is happening at the same time as Average 1-bedroom in Toronto climbs...

    Housing, Homelessness and Poverty

Higher profits, the margins aren't much different. Bigger, more expensive homes are only really a problem in the context of constrained resources - i.e. we have the capacity to build x sq. ft. of housing per year, and it gets allocated to a smaller number of bigger houses. A bigger number of...
