Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

My change of open terrain penalty to open terrain bonus (for non-horse, non-armor) units has also worked very well (open penalty from -33%:c5strength: to open bonus +20%:c5strength:). In my games the horse units, although still powerful are not so overwhelming (a good thing). My strategy has...

    Stealth Bombers...

Just because a stealth plane has never been shot can you assume that it was because of it's "stealth". Often times it is that the US already has air supremacy that allows the planes to fly unmolested. I'm pretty sure the F-15 (since 1972) has never been shot down. Which is quite amazing...

    Late game unit production

You can also mod in lower hammer costs. About 2 weeks after civ5 was released I have been playing the game modded with units at 0.5x hammer costs and buildings at 0.75x hammer costs. It works pretty well.

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

Yes Roxlimn, yes. I know ranged units can attack. Re-read my above post you had just quoted. Yes fortifying @50% is enough to counter the penalty. As well is shock 2. But it doesn't change the fact that the -33% penalty is broken. Again for the upteenth time, promotions are irrelevant...

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

Since defending ranged units are also subject to the -33% clear terrain penalty they can be slaughtered as well, by all units ->> melee, ranged, siege, tank, air, naval. There, ranged units accounted for. For the 4th time: Because sometimes there is no rough terrain around Since ranged...

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

Sometimes it's best to take your own advice. :p My changes will make it harder for the casual player by making it more difficult to steamroll the AI and making domination more difficult. Just now I did not ignore your criticism. I showed how the game under my mod makes it harder for casual...

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

No I'm not changing ranged units... but the fact my mod does not allow the slaughtering wholesale of units in clear terrain by any attacker (including attacking ranged units) is a good thing. No, I just want to change the clear terrain penalty. That does not mean changing the whole game...

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

Ranged units: In my mod ranged units still cause damage to units in flat lands. Nothing has really changed except for maybe now ranged units have less of a chance of annihilating units on their own. This is a good thing since ranged units historically were used to "soften up" enemies, not...

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

Huh? The insanity is the terrain defense disparity in Civ5. A swordsman (str 16) defends on clear: 10.7 strength A swordsman (str 16) defends on rough: 20 strength Thats a 87.5% difference "without [really] doing anything" (meaning I don't even have to buy a policy to get that spread)...

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

Oh, I listen, you just haven't convinced me of anything. Huh? Consider indirect morale representation and everything else? Do I need to consider weather effects, disease, trench foot, fuel, etc. etc. etc. to understand that combat on clear terrain is broken? Get a clue. Correct. In Civ5...

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

I never made that assumption anywhere, ever. The reason you slaughter so many AI units is mainly because they are effectively worthless in open terrain. That is the problem. 1. Nerf: My solutions "nerf" the wholesale slaughter of units on clear terrain (good thing) 2. Simpler: My...

What you are describing here is a promotion problem. Build Henry a barracks and he will be a happy warrior.

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

Nobody can effectively "defend" on clear tiles @-33% penalty. What you do is attack them before they attack you because the attacker has a 3:2 advantage. And no you did NOT defend your clear tiles. You slaughtered the AI when it entered clear tiles in your region. You hit them hard before...

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

By your statement above it seems you believe that wars favor defenders in Civ5 in it's current form. Due to the amount of steamrolling I disagree, Civ5 in its current form is an Attacker-pro game. Human players get that right now by sitting units on rough ground & the policy with up to 50%...

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

Seven05, you ideas are interesting. The only problem that I see is that some battles may take way too long because of the high health totals. I may incorporate some of what you did in a later mod. LOL, in one breath you attack my -33% -> +20% (53% total) change as "insane" (meaning too...

Defending on clear tiles is a DEATH sentence

As a matter of fact, depending on how important the programmers tell the AI to use rough tiles over clear (i.e. rough = you live, clear = you die) , this may facilitate the steamroll even more. Many times the only rough terrain is 2 or 3 hexes to the side, or maybe 2 hexes in the rear of the...

Sonereal: In my current game by just altering the terrain values my AI problems seem to be going away. How can you explain that?
