to grow or not to grow

Forgetting the cultural victory, the rest is about controlling happiness at any level. Its just harder as you go up. The more cities you build, the more unhappy people get. You get a -3 per city plus -1 per population (unless your India). So you have to decide if the location the city will be...

    Favourite civ

My favorite is Aztecs as I allows use their UU, UB and unique ability. Plus it forces me out of my builder mode that I have tenacity to fall into if I play a non-aggressive civs. As far as China upgrading to the best rifleman, we will have to disagree on that one. A jag by the time it hits a...

What is your favorite Unique Building?

I went with the floating garden but its a tough choice between the floating garden or the satraps court - food or happiness/gold?

    The Best Unique Unit? 1#

The jaguars. It gets woodcraft, healing two points after a kill, and a jungle defensive bonus on building - and all of these remain with the unit through out its promotions in the infantry line. Build them early and often and they form the core of your army for the entire game - add in a couple...

    South American Invulnerability

I don't fine SA much fun to play and I play the Aztecs a lot. So scouting not a big issue and the jags get a defensive bonus in jungle making it even better defense. The big problem's growth. Jungles give two food so getting surplus food means either cutting jungle or finding a clearing to...

    What is your favorite Civilization?

Aztecs as I like the fact that jags have a movement advantage, upgrade last through the game as the unit upgrades, and the growth advantage the building gives plus it pushes me out of my builder mode with the extra social policy points for unit kills. Just a fun civ to play.

    How many others experience this

I wish I could play sessions that long. However, between the wife, kids, dogs, work and other parts of real life, a three hour session is long for me. Many years ago before I was married, I could play games all night and go to work the next day - or lose weekends if I didn't have a party to go...

What is your favorite Unique Unit? 2#

I would have to agree with the comments regarding the Keshik - its simply a killer in the hands of a human player. While I hate Naresauan's Elephants, it doesn't compare with the damage the Keshik does when it arrives in force.

    The Happiness Factor

With Persia, try to get to the satrap building ASAP - it generates both gold and happiness for each city. Make sure you have all the usual happiness building as soon as they come on line - the coliseum, etc.... You didn't mention the social policy you have chosen, but if can get mercantilism...

Airports, Aircraft Buildings, and Aircraft Abilities

There are a number of issues raised here and few I will throw out for consideration: 1) Regarding airlifts. I worked in aircraft logistics for a long time. You can forget 70 ton tanks on aircraft. Even on the C130, you run into a load issue as far as weight per square foot on the aircraft...

Restore Production Buildings Pre-Patch Yield Modifiers

The question is whether the game plays better or worse with these changes. Overall, IMO, the game plays better with the changes made in the last patch. The only change that I think should be reconsidered is the change to the Factory. Because it cost one coal, and coal usually a relatively...

    Is cavalry weak?

Mounted units are relatively weak but useful. I usually have a few to keep a reserve and kill off enemy archers. But the main combat force will be swords class with a few spears/pikes backed by archers. Except of course if I have a UU. Tanks, on the other hand, simply rule. By then, you...

    Japan are disgustingly overpowered

One other thing to do - as with any other really aggressive and potentially strong attacker next to you - is build walls on your breaker city to help your archers. You know Japan will attack - and attack - and attack, so unlike other cases, walling a city next to Japan will pay for itself in...

Raging Barbs = easier game for human player?

Raging barbs will produce more barbs from camps but does not increase the number of camps or the respawn rate as camps get destroyed. So you get more barbs coming at you but no more camps. At the lower levels, it will destroy the AI ability to expand. Somewhere above Prince, it feels to me...

    Worst Civ?

I would vote England. On anything except a heavy water map, England at a disadvantage and even on a heavy water map the English longbowmen and faster naval movement don't really work well together. Spain very map dependent but they have some solid units to fall back on even if the NW don't...

    Huge map and marathon play

I play most of my games on marathon/huge maps and don't have a great computer. The turns don't take anywhere near 4 minutes even in modern era UNLESS everyone at war with everyone else and a lot of cities change hands. I would recommend that you pick a civ that you like and has some type of...

POLL: worst unique unit in Civ5

Woodshadows nailed it about jags. People focus on the healing ability of Jags and forget that they come with two other promotions out of the gate - one's ok but not great, the other one nearly as good as the healing ability and gets better as the jag gets promoted. 1) the one not so great is...

    Best Civs for Culture Wins?

I would agree with vexing regarding Songhai and France. France's ability is geared toward a fast start and domination/science than a long term culture win. Songhai simply gets too many advantages not to make it at least to tier II and maybe tier I. The extra culture per mpm, the extra gold...

    How to specialize/micromanage cities

Actually, I try to build markets & all in every city, I just don't make it a priority in city with a low money potential. Since markets don't have a maintenance cost, building them if I don't have another building to put in the production line does make the city more productive. Same for other...

Forrested hill - Mine or Lumber mill?

Nearly always mine over a lumbermill. I might reconsider if I was playing the Iroquois but I haven't played them in a long time. Other choices would include a farm if I had a lot of hills for that city and it had fresh water. Or if I was playing the Inca and had enough production hexes.
