PolyCast 2012 Christmas Special: "Girls Playing Civ Too"

It's on their youtube channel. Thanks for this. Interesting discussion if only that I don't hear ANY discussion about Civ other than on these forums.

    When will you buy it?

Already preordered. Just the espionage, new units and vamped AI is enough for me. Looking forward to seeing the rest of it too.

Tremble in Fear at my Mongol Horde

Peng Qi, that's a great story. I only have one game where I had a great comeback story. I was the smaller civ for the entire game except the last few turns. I somehow got through 3 UN votes with the help of other civs who also bought some city states so that the largest AI wouldn't win. I got...

City State takes Empire city shocker!

I've seen it happen a couple times. Both times, I was feeding it units to keep an opponent at bay. One time, I was attacking this city, and the city state came in a finished the job, then razed it!!! Annoyed me, but I pushed back the opponent and then took the city state for myself because one...

How can you like this series so much ?

That's a good point about the AI being repetitive. I just find the different ways to win as entertaining. If someone only wants to play one kind of game, then fine. But I find if I try different goals, then even if the AI is the same, the outcomes and the way I go about it changes. And yes, I...

How can you like this series so much ?

I like Civ 5 for the same reason I like most other games. I like to build up my own stuff and destroy everyone else's. It's especially satisfying when the computer asks for a peace treaty that involves my giving them everything I have and they're the weaker party, not by units, but by sheer...

I can never seem to keep up...

Build your cities within range of horses or elephants. That way, you can build circus for happiness. So Animal Husbandry is important. Try and get at least one wonder for happiness. I like the Eiffel Tower myself though that's later on. But there are others just as good. Be conscious of what...

    Cities starving themselves

That's all nice, but I hate that there's still a bug where this happens when no enemies are around. It's not just about allocation. It's a real bug.

    Strange DoWs

I find if I have a huge pot of gold, no one declares war on me. Even with a tiny army. Oh, they'll taunt you. Denounce you. Do all sorts of things. But they just won't attack. As soon as my gold drops, BAM tons of units at my border and next turn, it's war. If you have a decent army and tons of...

Increasing a civs flavor towards victory

In my last game on Emperor, two AI's were fighting for city states to get diplomatic victory. But one guy had tons of gold. And he didn't have enough votes anyhow. But on the same turn that the second vote was supposed to happen, I finished the spaceship. The top AI was building spaceship parts...

    Cities starving themselves

The problem is that you think you're locking a tile, but it doesn't. The lock icon doesn't mean a thing. I've also had a city with 12 people in it and every turn one of the tiles would switch to starve itself. The very last tile simply would not lock no matter what setting I used or what...

Restarts and starting tiles on Emperor+

Won my second game on Emperor. I'm actually using a three city strategy I posted here a while back. I'm finding that beyond the starting location requirement, it's near impossible to win if you don't take over at least 2-3 cities before turn 150 or so. Not only is there already pop there, but...

Restarts and starting tiles on Emperor+

I'm finding King a little too easy of late, but Emperor is quite the leap for me. If I don't have a starting tile of :c5food::c5food::c5production: (or two), then I find it impossible to get a good enough start. I have had a win already in Emperor, but I had a map where everyone had very low...

What do you expect from an Expansion?

I'd just be happy if the AI was better at 2 things. 1. Battles. Don't send in a single unit at a time. And don't send in your catapults or ranged units first. 2. Diplomacy. Don't buy luxuries just because you can. Have trading techs require a GS.

    Unit formation by era

Not sure what exactly the question is asking. I play King and sometimes Emperor. So I'll give my unit strategy for that. I like to have 4 swordsmen (or 1 warrior per city + 1 extra and then upgrade them) early on. I like to build at least one ranged unit like an archer or mounted archer, or...

Immortal troops - the real problem with Civ 5

I've seen other games that let up upgrade units. But you needed barracks and you needed to spend 10 turns or so where you effectively can no longer use the unit. It got longer the more advanced the unit was. This makes sense. While you can just hand someone a rifle and tell to go target...

King and easier 3 city strategy

That's awesome! Glad to hear it. BTW, a small update about chopping down tree outside of your territory. You do get some hammers, but it's not the full amount. I THINK it was 12. But I can't remember exactly. In any case, I do remember that I said to myself when I played it that it wasn't...

Your Favorite Wonder! Which one do you rush?

Great Library and Eiffel Tower are my favourites. HS is good too. Eiffel Tower just because I hate dealing with happiness. And I like that it not only has +5 happiness, but also +1 happiness for every two policies. It's on par with Notre Dame and it seems the computer doesn't go for ET too often...
