Freeciv is still developed. Whether or not it has become a contender depends on what you find most important. It's certainly not as polished or graphically pleasing to look at as something like Civ V, but I'd argue it implements multiplayer rather a lot better. In terms of gameplay features...

I'd like to play! I can't promise to take every single turn though as sometimes I'm away at weekends etc. but I shouldn't miss more than one at a time. If you're ok with that, count me in!
