I remember a few from Civ 3. Theory of Evolution would give you 2 free techs at a critical time in the game.
Universal Suffrage gave you some sort of happiness boost in the late game.
Shakespeare's Theatre gave you happiness in the city it was built.
This has happened to me plenty of times as well. In my experience, it mainly happens when you are late to complete a wonder. If you really want to hard build a wonder, make the research and production a priority, and start it as early as possible.
You actually can control when you golden ages come, IF you can found a strong religion and get all the happiness boosters, like pagodas and cathedrals and IF you can build Notre Dame. This allows you to be around +40-50 happiness. So you hit golden ages every 10-12 turns.
Persia can be the most powerful Civ in the game. If you can found a strong religion, you can conquer the world and still have happiness hovering around 50. You can be in perpetual golden age for the late game. The combat bonus and gold from this is unequalled. As someone said, its game over...
Yeah, people still play Vanilla and G&K, it would be nice to have a place to discuss that.
I've been warned off BNW to the degree that G&K is more challenging., so I guess I'll wait for Civ 6, and keep playing Gods and Kings.
Is it possible to get all the DLC Vanilla civs, i.e. Denmark, Korea, etc. on G&K?
I bought them on Steam, but they don't show up in my game, what am I doing wrong?
To be clear, I thought Itssoeasy was talking about conquest games. Obviously, Honor wouldn't be appropriate for other victory conditions, nor do you need it just to survive in G&K, Immortal.
@ Beetle,
At Immoral, G&K, you can't skip Honor for Patronage. AI's floods you with units and you absolutely need every combat advantage you can get. You also really need Liberty. The difficulty of the game does limit your options.
I always play continents as I don't care for watery games. Games are much more winnable the smaller the map is.
Regarding bribing AIs to attack CSs, in my experience on Immortal/G&K, you don't need to do this because multiple AIs start swallowing up CSs from early on. Its not just the ultra...
A few more suggestions, you want to complete Liberty. This gives you the early worker, settler, GP and golden age. I would only open Tradition. If you are going for conquest, Honor is a must.
You want faith from your pantheon and you want to found a religion for the extra happiness...
I'm playing conquest games on G&K Immortal these days. It helps to have a somewhat isolated start, and in certain games, the AI just annihilates you no matter what you do.
In terms of science, you want to build libraries and National College ASAP. You also want to tech to Scientific Theory...
I'm playing domination games at Immortal these days (G&K). Its a challenge. You're probably too far behind in science and you have happiness issues. Do you have enough culture to open rationalism and maybe buy 1 or 2 GSs?
You won't win this by domination.
I have this issue quite often. I usually block off my capitol from missionaries or opposing great prophets. The are usually only out to convert my capitol/holy city, and after awhile, they get frustrated? and go away.
DoWing is not an option and neither is letting your capitol become conveted.
