    State of Civics Poll

Hopping into here to offer a few more thoughts on civics, some of which echoes above discussions. A general theme throughout this is that I have a decent number of thoughts on how effects of a civic feel to use and also how objectively valuable they are to achieving UHVs. Government On late...

Unit balance: Units that are overpowered or underpowered?

I have occasionally trained a few Longbowmen since they're sometimes useful for dealing with Turkic/Mongol conquerors that have light cavalry stacks mixed in with other units and which sometimes like to camp out on hills/forest tiles. That is all. I have never trained a skirmisher. Otherwise...

    Civilisation Attributes open discussion

Of the suggestions for Byzantine UPs up to now, I want to throw in my verbal vote for this one (or the gold = bonuses in capital). The "redirect shrine income" is interesting, but I think it runs into the problem that it doesn't really make sense for most of the game if a player is playing...

    Civilisation Attributes open discussion

I didn't re-read the entire thread, but I second all the feedback I did read and recall (and possible imagine) with respect to: The Byzantine UP being sort of pointless and directly competing with UHV1, and also UHV1 being boring (also, personally, I find UHV3 very easy and straightforward, but...

    Bug Reports and Technical Issues

Is there a trick to running the mod with a Steam install? Having upgraded to a new rig a bit ago (without a physical drive), I'm now using the Steam version of Civ 4 rather than my old disk install. The tragedy there is that I can't seem to start a game in the mod now. The last time I played...

    Plans for DoC 1.17

On this point, I know that the different leaders have different favoured civics. But do they have other gameplay differences? I have some vague memories that there's some different variables that can be attached to the leaderheads; at the very least, there's something that lets some leaders be...

    Suggestions and Requests

If QOL civic tab changes are on the menu, RFC Europe has this really helpful feature, I think, where when you select/mouse over a civic, other civics that are compatible/incompatible stability-wise are colored green/red, and also listed in the civic description. I know info on compatible civics...

    Suggestion for American cities?

Mixing this setup with Zaddy's one above, you can squeeze in a 7th Core city with "Cleveland" (Rochester by default) 1 NW 1W of New York City, which can work the Toronto Corn and the 3F lake 2NW of NYC. Then with St. Louis poaching tiles from Charleston and New Orleans, and eventually, a Boston...

What happens if two vassals declare war each other?

This also happens (happened?) if you vassalize two civs with a conqueror event relationship -- e.g. vassalizing Spain and Moors early will lose you a vassal once Spain's reconquista event fires. Not sure if that still happens though.

Is it Possible to Take Over the World?

Since 2 Food = 1 population, then a Village/Town will be better if a Farm gives less than 2 Food --- so, before Biology, and after Biology, where the city already has enough food from improved resources or other improvements to grow to its happiness/health cap, then the Village/Town will be...

    Oh, Canada (1.16 UHV)

That's basically half the challenge to UHV2. Another somewhat helpful thing I've found is to suck up to GB. I have had them offer St. John's out of the blue (partway through the Halifax/Labrador culture push) just because they liked me and the city was too Canadian. As with city flipping...

    Suggestions and Requests

I'm almost certain this used to be a thing, and it was removed because it incentivized ALWAYS moving your capital out of your core.

    Civilisation Attributes open discussion

Agreed with these comments --- the "first to discover X technologies in Y era" are challenging, but can be quite tedious. I have also always been fond of the "strongest navy" suggestions for UHV2 as well. So rather than a "largest navy" goal where number of ships is important, both the...

    Which civs have expanding cores?

I have general ideas on some other ones: When Prussia enters the Modern or Global Era, their core shrinks to lose East Prussia (i.e. Konigsberg). When Japan enters the Industrial Era, their core expands beyond Honshu (Kyoto + Edo) to include Kyushu. When Italy enters the Industrial Era (?)...

Specifically, you consume the Settler and get all the buildings in the target city that a newly built city would receive for the era.

Not possible to build Protestant seminary

I believe that 1700AD England starts with the Scientific Method technology, which obsoletes monasteries (e.g. Protestant Seminaries) and prevents their construction. If you want to build missionaries you will need to adopt the Tolerance civic (available with the Civil Liberties tech), which...

    DoC 1.16 [America UHV] Strategy

I have done this UHV the way that Wessel V1 described, but lately I've been using an early conquest approach. I usually play on Monarch/Normal, but I have had some success with the below approach on Emperor/Normal (I goofed around and lost UHV2 on Emperor to Russia). I usually complete the UHV...

    Dawn of Civilization General Discussion

There's a multiplier to core population if you have only one city in your core (unsure as to the amount of that multiplier), so for civs like Thailand and Argentina, where your capital can work most of your core, and additional cities would be small, it's best to settle only one core city. For...

    Dawn of Civilization General Discussion

I believe you must settle on the starting Sugar plot, which honestly isn't that terrible all things considered. You still get +1F at least on the plot, and maybe +1C as well?

    Need some help with Japan

Trades from war only count to Modernization if the war is "major". Not sure how that's defined, but it prevents you from declaring phony wars just to get tech trades.
