This is annoying (Caravans and ZOC)

Civ 2 is easy enough on Emperor level that it's not really necessary to use tactics that may be deemed as cheating. I don't even use Caravans, except to help build Wonders.

    Pre-made World vs Scenarios

Another questions that has arisen while playing the original Rome scenario: How do I know what my Objectives are??? Thanks for the heads up. I've also downloaded your scenario and maybe I will even play it one day (so many games, so little time).

This is annoying (Caravans and ZOC)

Nice trick; I'll have to remember that. Using it to avoid the ZOC of actual military units (if that too works) sounds like cheating, but against caravans it's a fair tactic IMO.

This is annoying (Caravans and ZOC)

OK, so Caravans ignore Zone of Control, but why the hell do they at the same time enforce ZOC? I mean either Carvans ignore other units or they don't! I didn't notice this annoyance in regular games of ToT, but playing Civ2 and the Rome scenario, it's extremely annoying when a single...

    Pre-made World vs Scenarios

Am I right in assuming that Pre-made Worlds means that just the geography is pre-made, but everything else, like which civs are in play and where they are located, is random? And that if you need a good "simulation" of say Ancient Europe, you need a scenario where the Romans, Greeks and...

Civ 1 vs Civ 2 difficulty?

Well, I just won on Emperor level playing pacifist democract out-researching and outproducing the other civs. I didn't use any "cheats", and very few caravans and landed the space ships in 1986. In Civ 1 the only way I was able to win at Emperor level was through the Chariot bliztkrieg strategy...

    Question about happiness

Thanks for the clarification, Ali. It's not a problem as long as I know how it works, and as mentioned it's only a problem early in the game.

    Question about happiness

I started a new game on Emperor level, and things are going quite well. Keeping my population content is the main challenge so far. According to the manual your first two citizens should be content on Emperor level, and then any extra citizens start out as unhappy. But now one of my cities -...

Civ 1 vs Civ 2 difficulty?

I'm currently playing my first serious game of Test of Times, on King level, after a few trial games on lower on lower difficulties. I chose to play on a Small map, since fewer cities means less micro-management. I'm doing well so far; in 1640 I own 25 cities, 3 of which have been conquered...

How do you play ToT with modern monitors (things look so small)?

Yes, zooming makes things pixelated, and it doesn't work for the city map anyway. Oh well, switching between 1440x900 and 1024x768 is a kind of workable solution.

How do you play ToT with modern monitors (things look so small)?

One drawback about the new, more realistic graphics of Test of Time (compared to Civ 1) is that on modern monitors things look so tiny on high resolutions. The default resolution for my 22' monitor is 1650x1050, but despite Windows' nagging I prefer 1440x900. But even then things look so tiny...

Test of Time - or is it?

Oh well, I found ToT on an abandonware site, so I guess I'll be able to finally play it after all.

Test of Time - or is it?

So Civilization 2 is getting near to the top of my list of games to (re)play. I only played it a bit back in '96 or '97, using a friend's copy of the game. After that, I at one point bought the Test of Time remake from 1999. Or at least I thought I did... I never installed the game until now...

    What government is the best?

20-30% luxuries is usually needed under Democary and Replublic, but for a well developed (lots of roads and railroads) civ the net income in still much more than under despotism.

    Renaming cities

In my experience the Amiga version is inferior. The random maps are not random, or even pseudo random if you want to be pedantic about the word "random", but will be the same every time you play the same leader.

    Finally won on Emperor level

I used to play Civ 1 on my Amiga back in the days, but the only time I managed to win (on King level) was when I stole the tech that allows building of nukes, and then in one fell swoop nuked and conquered all the opposing civs cities in one turn. With no serious opposition I won the space race...

    What government is the best?

Communism is the death of Michelangelo's Chapel and The Pyramids. So unless other civs have built these wonders, it's the last thing I want. And isn't the only difference between Communism and Monarch that under Communism corruption is evenly distributed among your cities, while under Monarch...
