There's something in one of the .ini files that tells how close you can zoom in. In debug mode you can go in a lot closer than in gameplay, and I changed mine so I could zoom that close at any time. I just tried to find it and couldn't, though. :/ Not sure if it was an .ini or an .xml.
What version of Civ4 did you play where diplomacy was not heavily influenced by how close the AI is to winning? Civ5 just made the invisible modifiers for being ahead or behind on the scoreboard visible. In BTS the AI was also aware of the player nearing victory conditions and would often act...
What I see here is a lot of people who never tried Deity before they got Civ 5. I'm pretty sure Civ4 Deity had MORE AI bonuses than Civ5, and I remember free techs at higher difficulties in every Civ game (and I've played 1 through 5).
I thought he was talking about people who were criticizing the game for being too easy while playing on Prince, not the fact that some people play on Prince. It's a valid criticism, too. The "default" difficulty level for the last two Civ games have been pretty easy - with Civ3 it took me a...
In every strategy game I've played with a tactical overlay, I felt like I had to play out every combat manually because it was rare that using auto-resolve or allowing the AI to control my units didn't feel like kicking myself in the head. I would do that for a week or three, until I had a good...
The Civ4 AI lies too, with the hidden modifiers that can make a hostile civilization look friendly. Digging through XML and playtesting has made those invisible modifiers about as secret as the visible ones, but for a while people didn't understand why a civilization that supposedly would not...
I've seen it listed as one of the reasons someone didn't like me in a tooltip. A civ I was at peace with after a previous war asked me why my troops were on their border, and I lied, then attacked a couple of turns later. It showed up in the reasons for other civs that were in contact ("You...
I don't think the game is trying to model the maritime city state providing all the food. In my mind the maritime states are like small countries with large sea trade networks, who are buying food everywhere and shipping food to your cities. Until relatively recently, ships were about the only...
Look at the other side of WWII. When Japan surrendered, none of their original cities had been conquered and they could have fought a lot longer. They realized that they would lose and made an unconditional surrender and ended up with all their cities as puppets. Some may believe that Japan...
I like it, it adds a tough decision to the gameplay sometimes. I am REALLY loathe to waste a promotion on a heal, and a few times I've lost a unit because I took a chance and didn't use it when I should have. I also like that the AI uses it because it makes combat less deterministic. I almost...
My problem with Rise of Mankind is that the turns would take FOREVER later in the game, and the AI absolutely sucked at understanding how to use all the new buildings and such, so that I could absolutely dominate a couple of skill levels above where I normally played. If you like playing the...
This is what I believe as well, as long as it is coupled with increased competition from the AI for the city states. Here's how I would buff the other city states.
Cultural City State - Provides same culture for the capital as they currently do, but also provides culture to other cities -...
I think a big cause of runaway AI is city states declaring total war too easily. What I've seen happening is an AI will take a couple of city states, and the city states will automatically ally against him. Now this AI that is already proven powerful enough to take a couple of cities is at war...
It was like that before, I was confused a bit too because the bar stays blue when you get bumped back down to Friends, but you can see who they are allied to on their diplomacy screen and eventually buy back their loyalty.
Yep, they'll gift you any unit you have the technology for, whether or not they have it. Since units take so long to build, this is a really nice advantage when you have several militaristic states, as they tend to give you something you recently got the tech for. I frequently get new unit...
