If that's your only source of Iron I'd build the city on top of it for protection. You'll still have access to the sea's resources once your cultural borders expand and the hills will make up for the loss of hammers on the iron. If protection of the iron isn't a top priority, I'd say to settle...

Well, part of the problem from Civ3 was the AI wouldn't spend the gold to upgrade units due to the cost so they'd have a bunch of obsolete units running about.

I generally kill whoever built the pyramids first since those granaries are so valuable for city growth. If I'm playing conquests I try to get the statue of zeus and knights templar both since it's real annoying when the AI's army gets free boosts even though not all that many units are...

I tend to go achipelago 60% water...one time I did that it ended up being a pangaea anyways so it's almost like a random option for 60% water, heh

I clustered about 4 cities in that area and they all became settler factories, heh...there's some grassland to the east that also had quite a few cattle and wheat clustered about it

Have a rather absurb number of cattle and wheat around my start location...playing on monarch and I should have probably tried diety since I'm sitting with like 40 cities and the AI have like 8 each edit: playing on monarch diff.

yeah, generally the best way it to have an arseload of cities....set science very low and get the techs by paying for them, stealing them, or going to war and using them as a peace agreement. then building/rushing marketplaces in all cities help, and pray you get smith's trading company, heh...

If I play on chieftain and an expansionist civ...I sometimes get nearly all the ancient era techs from goody huts when I build a couple explorers on top of the free one, heh.
