If you haven't done so (really for any game or install, not just CIV4): In your Windows Task Manager, turn off all programs running in the background. ie. Yahoo Messenger, WinZip, Norton AntiVirus, especially programs like Alcohol or AnyDVD. You are just asking for problems if you don't.
