Yeh the barbarians are ridiculous in RFC, usually I can barely expand beyond the first couple of settlers because of the barbarians

I have never had a meltdown and it doesnt say how it happens in the civilpedia. How do meltdowns happen? Does it happen when your city becomes unhappy for a while?

the protective trait is mainly a defensive bonus, which means that a prot leader will be more difficult to be destroyed early game. It doesnt let a civ take over the world early game, like, say, praetorians are able to do. thus praetorians are more of an advantage than prot trait

I play on prince difficulty and the ai always makes their settlers much faster than me. Im lucky if i get three cities, compared to their 5 or 6 (but I like small maps, many civs). I usually make up for it with a rush, then i start playing the diplomacy.

The culture bomb doesnt help much later on in the game once everyone's culture is high, unless there was a city recently captured near your borders and you want to flip it.
