I always go bankrupt when I start early wars

If you are a civ like Rome (good warlike civ), you need to conquer more, if you're financial, build more cottages instead.

I always go bankrupt when I start early wars

This keeps me from going broke: - Get slavery ASAP - Keep on attacking your neighbours to fill your coffers with gold to keep on researching - Research worker techs, then Iron (for the rush), then currency, then CoL - Don't start building marketplaces right away! Keep on attacking enemy cities...

how to take maximum advantage of settler level?

Take the Romans and stomp over them.

How does a newbie not die?

If you're double the size of your opponent, your power level will be very high even without having a really big army, because of the way power is calculated. So expand rapidly early on, and make sure you're the biggest ASAP.

Ways to make Sea Units more appealing

Oh yeah, put a few battleships at your coasts to kill incoming invaders. 'Rule the seas'. On higher levels I don't bother with naval invasions. You'll be sending in medieval troops against riflemen, unless you've practicaly won the game already, where you'll be rolling tanks over riflemen...

Ways to make Sea Units more appealing

Sea units are worthless for everything except pillaging seafood. They should really cripple the trade of the enemy cities they are near. They should give a bonus if they're nearby your own cities because they counter piracy.

    macemen's 50% vs melee.. why?

Simple. A mace has a longer reach than an axe, and applies force to the blow more efficiently and can be handled a bit easier.

Civs beating you to wonder by 1 turn

If it's the only early wonder I build regularly, Stonehenge, I often find the cash it gives almost is better than the effect of the wonder!

CivMath: Whipping in a REX war

This is the reason I do a double pop whip, which seems inefficient, but doesn't give you that buildup of unhappiness.

    Oops, I razed a Wonder!

This annoys the **** out of me. Screens where I have to take a really, really important decision that cut me out of my information sources.

CivMath: Whipping in a REX war

If there is a suitable close AI to attack, I will attack around bronze / iron age. To gain overwhelming numbers over the AI, I use the whip. However, I'm a bit confused about what's better: Whip axe/spear/sword immediately when at 4 pop and after finishing building something else, costing 2...

Sure after being stabbed in the back twice i'll sign it!

I once had Ghandi and the Egypt chick sharing a continent with me. Ghandi only opened borders after I had attack him twice, but the Egypt chick became a close friend again. It felt like I'd put the difficulty setting two notches down :)

    First worker/settler

It all depends on wood tiles. W - W - S is optimum, but with 4 tree squares it just doesn't do the trick, especially on FP. W - S is the thing I always do, even without trees (haven't had that problem yet, but three trees is a possibility). Sometimes I get as much as 12 tree squares, this...

Deity Strategy - Share your thoughts

Are you still aiming for Stonehenge or leave it to the AI? If I'm not situated in the woods I can forget about getting it, especially with flood plains I really need to leave some woods around (is it three or four?). Hannibal doesn't come with Cultural ofcourse, so resources out of the fat...

    Bringing allies into a war...

To me states that I've pounded into vassalage are not worthy of anything useful except for a weak ally in war. And some domination points. So I still kill them, only to be annoyed by them capitulating to some AI.

The Emperor Masters' Challenge 3 (on Warlords)

I'd move the warrior SW first and then see if I see more interesting things in the surroundings before settling.

    Banks and Printing Press

Running at 100% shows you how much money you lose when you are not generating income from tiles commerce. The amount of money you lose is only affected by building courthouses, using GP in cities that generate gold or trading. The rest is up to city and army maintenance, plus the inflation cost.
