Depending on lvl of difficulty you can build a number of units with out a support cost.After that set number you have to start paying gold to support any uints above the number of free units you are allowed to build at that difficulty level.You should be able to find the number of free units...

Cats and swords are are what I use. Sometimes the occasional horsearcher. Cats that have the ability reduce city defense work well. Wail on them with the cats till defense is 0 and then storm the city.

Everytime I try warlord I get overrun by Barbs. I would love to be overrun by someone else for a change. My two cents:invest in some military.Horse archers are good early as far as covering ground in a hurry.
