Wow. Postman Pat comes to Civ

Nope. I haven’t read any other posts on the forum. I just posted here as a knee-jerk because I was so disappointed, really disappointed, after sticking with Civ for so many decades. I just fired up the game, was looking forward to it. Can’t believe the state of it. But I will persevere and maybe...

Wow. Postman Pat comes to Civ

@Cerilis If you gonna judge others’ posts that hard, maybe you should have read the post before you replied, just a thought. I didn’t praise Civ IV’s graphics. I said it was “a worthy successor to Civ II”. Subtle, I know, but nothing to do with the graphics and really not that hard to follow...

Wow. Postman Pat comes to Civ

I have been playing Civ since Civilization (now known as Civ I). Totally love it, my best loved game ever. Just blew a load of dosh on the base game and the expansions. *What is this*?? The graphics are terrible, the user interface is clunky and hard to use, The whole thing feels like something...

Should You Move Your First Settler?

Well it all depends doesn't it? I usually settle in place but in SP, if my start looks terrible, I quite often have a look around. If I can't settle within a couple of turns I usually restart. Depends on the difficulty level - I don't think I can afford to lose more than 1 or 2 turns on Emperor...

    Which city for NC/Guilds?

I almost always build guilds and NC in my capital. I use food caravans quite a lot - inland ones are not great, but sea food trade routes work really well.

    Windows 7 update

Hello, I used to play SMAC/X a lot when the games were first released and have just re-installed them on my new laptop. I've got the original DVDs but have had a bit of a hunt to try to find the official patches - most web sites are still pointing to Firaxis but the page no longer exists...

A Guide to Playing “Small” on Deity (feat. Piety)

@Acken Fair points on DV but like you say, it's hard to see that the DV is more "broken" than any other victory from that point of view. And Venice and Austria may not go for DV themselves, but they really get in the way - there are no similar barriers to other victories. You were saying...

A Guide to Playing “Small” on Deity (feat. Piety)

I think it probably does boil down to geopolitics, but I chose archipelago with Polynesia and it worked well - I got a lot of huts, which really helped. And my city state allies were a fantastic defence against a relentless Suleiman. They had lots of ships and were very active when his armies...

A Guide to Playing “Small” on Deity (feat. Piety)

Nope, this idea works and doesn't need either a passive AI or even non-competing religions, funnily enough. You should give it a go yourself, maybe? I usually play on emperor, so followed this for my first deity attempt. I didn't re-roll on opponents, but I did re-roll a few times to get...

    Gold, gold, gold

Food trade routes? Sorry if I'm being dim, but how does that help gold? Also does city growth help gold? sorry if that sounds stupid, but you are saying to grow my cities and I don't see anything in the info that indicates that this will help gold. OTOH, I do see the gold deficit varying...

    Gold, gold, gold

Thanks for the replies ... and so quick! Amazing. Well ... At this stage in the game there are no available cargo routes. Too far away. Regarding destroying camps and the rest ... I am flogging all my resources (but I can't flog much because the AIs have nothing) and I'm destroying...

    Gold, gold, gold

OK, so probably I'm doing a load of stuff wrongly but I'm an old hand at Civ and this type of game so not totally doolally. Gold. All I have is two cities, four units, only early game (470BC). I'm -7 gold per turn and it's not obvious to me how I correct this. No gold from rivers. I'm...

Considering moving back to Gods and Kings?

Why? Just asking because a bald opinion doesn't reveal much or help at all. I like Gods and Kings but am becoming seriously frustrated by the lack of gold. If you can't even have 4 units out exploring and minor development of cities without running into serious debt then the strategy is...

How is the Civ 5 A.I. these days?

Well, Emperor is way too easy, Immortal way too hard. I don't really give a damn about level but I would like to have a challenging game that I have a chance of winning and can enjoy along the way. Frankly if the highest level that gave me that were Warlord, I would embrace it. But there really...

    The Iron Problem!

I have won very often without iron. Unless you are looking for a military victory, iron is not that critical provided you can research pretty fast and/or stay friendly with any close neighbours. Isolated on a continent without iron is a doddle. In fact, it's the kind of start I dream of

    G-Minor 124

Congratulations Shulec and Neilmeister, really good dates. A poor third, I'm afraid, should have been a bit closer really, but the barbs got to me in the end, just couldn't stand it any more :gripe: Hats off to the two of you :hatsoff: and to Habitus and Tachy for a very good start in the...

    G-Minor 124

I haven't tried this shyuhe, but I think you're right, it would slow down spreading the AP religion because Theology would arrive a *lot* later using this approach. Plus it's an extra tech to research - in my games my "extra" tech has been Confu so that I have a second religion to spread. I...

    G-Minor 124

Yes, Bismarck's starting scout is nice but you might find you like Ramesses a lot better on quick speed. I did exactly what neilmeister did - went with Qin at first because his starting techs are good and Ramesses is a very useful opponent for religious games. But 2 or more turns in anarchy is a...

    G-Minor 124

:) Thank you Tachy. I have joined you in the T70+ group while neilmeister and shulec execute embarrassingly competent games in the T60+ bracket  I think I came a little too late to this one, but it was fun. At least it reminded me how tedious barbs are, heh  I see the...
