When, if ever, should you go Worker-Worker?

I think it is pretty much understood that worker is *almost* always the best first build. A few special cases may exist, but they are rare. The question I've been considering lately, is when should you build a second worker immediately after the first? I used to think this was a terrible...

    Building Wealth vs Building Science

As usual, I realize I'm quite possibly very late on the scene here, but part of why I write these obvious things down is to get it out of my head and hopefully have tell people what else I can do better. So, in Civ4 the game rounds down fractions. These rounded down fractions lead you to...

No Hunting +Hereditary Rule = Cheap Happiness

This is probably one of those things that made me feel super proud of myself, that I'll describe and have all the truly competent players shrug and go 'oh, he figured that out, good for him'. The point is that if you never research hunting, you can build warriors very late into the game...

What are our Thoughts on the Hippodrome?

Namely the 5% culture per :) Horses are already more common than Dye's, so I think that is just a nice benefit. But I've been considering the merits of using the cultural slider to increase happy cap. My reasoning is this: Slider at 10% culture is 3 :) I am at, basically, 90% of my normal...

    Playing Spiritual Leaders

What is the best way to do it? My general experience is that the trait isn't particularly effective. You get a few less turns of Anarchy, but that's it. However, it may be that I just need to be switching civics more often then I do, or something. Are there some secrets to getting them to...

The Internet as a Civ Game Concept

I have been thinking recently about how the Internet should be depicted in games like this. In civ 4 it was a Wonder of the world. This is clearly silly now, since all nations eventually get the internet, and in reality it is a commerce and productivity tool more than anything else. Also...

Here's a novel thought, luxuries in limited quantity

Instead of just having an 'incense' square, why not make it like '3 incense' square similar to Iron and horses? 3 incense = 3 happiness. Getting more incense makes you more happy, with a cap at like 10 or something. Why do Luxury resources work in a different way than tactical ones?

How to make Stacks Work: Joint attacks

Please see the attached Combat Sample Image. My idea works off One principle: Joint Attacks: When a unit attacks a target, it gets a 'joint attack' bonus for each other ally adjacent to the target (*in a different tile), who has not already helped attack this turn. A unit can only help...

    Elemental, are you really surprised?

So, I played Demigod back when it first came out. And it was a disaster. Terrible release, lots of apologetics by the company, and then it fizzled into nothingness. Demigod wasn't MADE by Stardock, just distributed by them. But they handled the online services for it... which were the worst part...

Civ 5 Should not have required Steam, some new thoughts

I know this has been discussed to death, but I honestly think I have a fairly different opinion from most of the haters of steam. For isntance, I actually love steam and use it, quite literally, for all the games I play. I see it as having these advantages: 1) Built in Community 2) Automatic...

    Modding doesn't fix balance problems.

I wanted to address this misconception publicly. That is, I'm rationalizing my creation of a new thread, because I feel this is a message most will find informative. A common idea with games, not just civ 5 or civ 4 or ANY civ game, is that if there is some problem with the balance of game...

What civ 4 Difficulty did you play on, do you like civ 5 more?

Curious to see if there is any kind of trend here amongst Civ fanatickers. Bonus points if you respond saying if you play Civ 5 on a harder difficulty or not.

Can't Understand Civ 5 Diplomacy? Help is here!

This advanced diplomacy Calculator will help you understand whether your neighbors will attack you, stay back, or ask for research pacts. It can give you good details on WHEN founding a city will make them think you are encroaching on their domain, or which City States they feel you shouldn't...

    Removal of Global Warming

On the one hand, I agree that previous global warming mechanics weren't the best. Especially as the tied in to Nuke usage more than was reasonable (in many cases). On the other though, doesn't it seem like a rather auspicious decision given the REAL worlds current political climate... and...

    Two interesting Tales

What I am about to relate is 100% true. And just as a warning it has to do with the argument about civ 5, so if you are tired of that, please hop out. I have a friend. Let's call him Sam for right now. In my circle of friends, Sam is the one who never really plays strategy games. FPS, RPG...

Meta Analysis: How popular IS civ 5?

A lot of discussion has been had on whether civ 5 is popular? We can't answer that question in its entirety, but we can look at the various responses that we've seen so far. Here then, is a list of Civ Fanatics polls that relate to this question: 8-28...

    Citizen = 1 hammer, Engineer = 1 Hammer also?

This just seems completely silly to me. A worker who is not working a tile gives 1 hammer per turn. An engineer specialist ALSO gives 1 hammer per turn. The only difference is literally the 3 GPP. You will go DOWN in production using Great Engineers. GE's being about the worst specialist...

    Best Fix for Maritime States

Make them give a percent bonus to growth instead of a flat bonus. Aka, if you are growing at 2 per turn in your capital, a maritime state might give +50% and net you more food. This way you can't feed your cities based solely on maritime states, but can make them grow substantially faster...

World Map not looking so great?

I was just thinking about this in my last game or so. I've uh, played 'other' turn based historical strategy games that generate random globes. For right now I won't spoil which ones. But on these, you'd have some pretty serious looking terrain. Huge bands of desert and jungles in the...

    Myths and Tips

Myth 1, more cities are harder to keep happy. Almost all social policies or tech paths will give you access to happiness modifiers that you get per city. +1 happiness per trade route, +1 happiness per university, -1 happiness for number of cities, etc etc. Combined with the basic happiness...
