Gold from fake trade exploit.

I discovered a funny exploit where you can get a lot of gold from resource trade without even trading the resource.

For this we need:

  • One resource a luxury is preferred.
  • A civ to trade with
  • A warrior or any other combat unit
Lets say we have one Gem resource:
  1. Send a worker and Build a mine (6 turns on standard speed)
  2. Trade Gems with any civ.
  3. Send your Warrior and pillage Gems.
  4. Order your worker to repair the Mine (3 turns on standard)

The deal is canceled, you get the cash with no refund and the mine will be repaired in 3 turns
You get the cash for trading with them and they don't get anything in return for paying.

Now repeat this as many times as you want:
  • Trade again
  • Pillage
  • Repair
  • Repeat

Below are screenshots for Gold Luxury trades, 1 deal takes 30 turns but here I made 3 deals in 12 turns:

This was at a custom scenario map where I gave the AIs a lot of gold from start for testing.

Total gold = 675 in 12 turns.

If we continue we will get a Total of 2025 Gold in 30 turns instead of 225. :crazyeye:

That's nice, but this is the strategy and tips forum, not the exploiting a bug forum.

If you really want to exploit the luxury trades, keep triggering the 1 turn deals bug that does not involve pillaging.

If you look in the Civ5 - Confirmed Bugsforum you'll find Patch 1.0.1.135 - Luxury deals last one turn!

I'm pretty sure I saw the pillage, repair, resell bug listed in the extensive bug list post, hence my first post about exploiting bugs.

This exploit is not a typical bug and it is not the same as the bug you have mentioned, this exploit is a flaw in the game logic, it works perfectly as the code is designed: When a resource is not available the trade is broken.

This can be fixed by making part of the money spent on the deal refundable. Refund gold for the remaining X turns on the deal but then we may have another problem if the player spent all his money before the refund then what to do??

The only way to totally fix this is by removing advanced payment and only allowing Gold per turn.

Exactly my opinion. Or else at least add some diplo hit for defaulting on the deal. If you can't protect your luxuries: Your risk. I made a post about this in the bug reports a couple of days ago, although I didn't remember you can pillage your own improvements.

This was around in civ IV, too. You could upgrade virtually every unit you had by trading for a VERY expensive iron/horse/whatever and then pillage part of the resource trade deal to insta-cancel it without conceeding anything. A similar tactic was available to rush buy masses of oil troops/nukes/whatever was needed to capture such a resource permanently.

I wonder if they'll bother patching it. I suspect they'll have to though or no resource:gold deals will ever be viable, unless they once again lock things into a /turn for /turn trade only.

lol

how the heck did you get a worker on Turn 0 standing on a gold ready to mine with Mining tech as well.
but ya, see your point...ya..without turn to turn trades, lump of gold trades can't be fix.

You can. this was added in one of the patches as I remember.

I think it's been there from the start. I've almost pillaged my own improvements by accident many times.

Is there really any legitimate use for pillaging yourself?

Ohh negativity from the first reply .. this is funny exploit dude what is your problem

Well...dude..some players (most actually) here actually prefer to try to win this game without using major exploits. That being said, others feel that anything in the game is OK to use, so I am not criticizing you and thx for pointing this out so the devs can patch some of this stuff.

.. neilkaz ..

I keep having trouble with growing puppet cities. I just thought the other night what would happen if I pillage all the cities farms while I wait for the workers to come in and build TPs. I haven't had time to test this theory yet since i am in the middle of a 3 city Ghandi cultural challenge.

If you know that your city is in an untenable position and will be conquered soon, you pillage its tiles so that the conquerer will have to waste time and workers rebuilding once they take it. Basically, it's the same as the historical scorched earth strategy in real life.

I rarely play single player because of this. It's easy to make corrections of these exploits but they are too slow. Humans are more fun to play. I'm not playing single player until they fixed everything.

I am the kind of guy who can easily exploit these tricks!
