WW1-WW2 Naval Vessels Discussion

Originally he had them all password protected and you needed to email him for the codes. His Yamato and Nelson were the only ones I could convert, and used them to make units.

I checked a few of the zip files, and none were passworded; so we can hope for the best!

I just forgot...
As previously mentioned US is without Pre-Dreadnoughts in Civ3

Can do.. I missed alot of these when I went through the C4 DB.

Question what kind of hull designation would the Mogami Aircraft Cruiser have? Would still be considered a CA?

I was wondering the same thing, but couldn't find an answer. Seems it was still classified as a heavy cruiser; but I don't know for sure if there is a specific designation for the aircraft cruiser.

I changed some of the render settings around to try to get rid of the 'shakiness' on some of the units. I am using MentalRay now instead of the scanline renderer I was using before; so although I saw it, I wasn't really sure what the issue was. Ares brought it to my attention, and it seems it is due to not enough anti-aliasing.

Renders take a bit longer, because there seems to be only so much one can do for anti-aliasing in MR with small images (increasing sample quality and filter method only does so much)... so I am rendering larger images which allows for finer details, and resizing them later to get rid of the blockiness and shakiness (in which I can control how to resample the images).

Tough to say ahead of time how much improvement there will be, but comparisons have looked better. We will find out when I post the pre-refit Ise BB.

In reference to 96nn and cemo1956 post:

Yes the Kongo class were called "fast battleship" after they had been refitted in 1931. But they were even battle cruisers actually, I think.:)

I see that this is the Kongo after it´s reconstruction before WW2.
Is it possible to have the earlier Battlecruiser version of Kongo from pre-WW1 ??
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_battleship_Kongo

The current uploaded Kongo BB is pretty much target on to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kongo1944.png, so it would be the fast battleship version.

I looked online to try to see what the difference is between the Kongo BB and Kongo BC. Wiki gives some details, but I was looking for a drawout like the link above so I could compare. Depending on how big or vast the changes are, I would have to see plans to see if it's possible to alter the unit to make it a BC version.

I think I found some pics of the layout online, but TBH I am not sure if those are correct or not. If anyone has pics or links to the Kongo Battlecruiser layout, I would appreciate any info so I can see what I can do. :) Thanks.

Hey Tom,
Found the answer to my question instead of CA it is a CS and to answer your question about layout check out below.

CS eh? Will remember for future. :)

Thanks El Justo, I can pull the text file up.

@Delta_Strife: From the looks of it, the 1st reconstruction (1934), 2nd reconstruction (1937), and late war (1944) all look close enough that it wouldn't be worth doing seperate ones of those for civ scale. The uploaded Kongo I believe is the 1944 version, as it matched pretty darn close.

From the looks of the Kongo as built (1914), I believe I should be able to modify it to conform semi-close to that image. It won't be perfect, but using the plan you posted, I should be able to do it well-enough.

Length slightly shorter (704ft) than the BB (728ft).

Don´t forget to get rid of that, for many Japanese WW2 ships so common, huge Pagoda structure behind the command bridge.
Getting those two masts tall and nice.

Wow... never heard of these Maunsell Forts, what are they used for (or against) ? And where ? And what about making this one:
10_1.jpeg

Before it was used as the set for a tv game, it was equipped with canons and used as a static bombard platform against ships (wikipedia link here).

Okay...

For 1914 Kongo BC...
kongo1914.gif

Looks like catapult is still in the same spot; between the 2 Aft Guns. ???

It's not going to be perfect up close, so I'm just judging it solely on how it looks at Civ Scale.
h1Y2D.jpg

I copied / pasted pic of the model directly to the pic here to ensure the height of the masts were accurate, as well as engines (were lowered), height of main tower. Not everything is perfectly in sync (the rearmost engine is a little too far up (by maybe 1 or 2 pixels at civ scale), same with the rear gun).

I took all the mast lines out, since they disappear mostly at civ scale.

If it's good enough, I'll render it out. Let me know if anyone spots anything that they think should be adjusted or what not. :)

Looking GREAT Tom.
Go for it.

These minimize details are indeed very hard to pick up in the game itself.
Of course they look beatiful, but come gametime it´s the bigger features that really counts IMHO.
One should easy see a difference between these great new pre-WW1 steel ships.
And you have filled the bill almost to the top.
Guess you cleaned out the Civ4 DB when that Pallada Armoured Cruiser is done.

I salute you and wish I could buy you a drink sometime.

I left a wiki link :) Seems the sealand fort was actually a maunsell sea fort along with several others, and the maunsell army forts were anti-aircraft facilities (shot down 22 aircraft and 30 bombers!). They were to defend UK during WW2.

Fort Boyard, that looks like a good one. If I can't find a model, I could probably just make it. :) Since it's just a circle with windows and a tower.

@cemo1956: Thanks, and agreed. Since everything's already setup, it'll only take about 45 minutes to render it and post it up (unless I change the death animation, so it's not exactly the same!).

And yes, Civ 4 units do indeed look better as Civ 3 units.

The fort in the earlier pic is a gun battery against shipping, the other ones on the quad pods were installed by Mr "I'll have another scotch" Churchill to host AA batteries against German bombers inbound for industrial and military around the Thames.

The Kongo looks very good Tom! I included a rare aerial photo for you to help in your quest. From it I am reasonable sure that catapult is still between the turrets. The only major problem with the photo is it looks like work has already been done to the bridge area and the huge early mast at the front has been removed. I do have other photos of the front of the ship so if you want to see them let me know I will post them.

It's almost difficult finding specific info on the 1914 version. The catapult I think is the main thing. Since I'll have a plane flying off of it. It looks like one in both pics.

EDIT: Found here in Wikipedia section of Kongo.
In 1933, aircraft launch catapults were fitted between the two rear turrets.[5]

Guess there is no catapult? must have just been the hull, or hull structure. Makes sense I suppose, in 1914 the technology wasn't exactly there I don't believe.
