SGOTM 13 - Plastic Ducks

Mediation? Never trade that tech! The last thing we need to do is help the AIs settle their disputes more effectively! :)

But seriously, I agree with holding on to the other techs. Unless we need the cash, Meditation is more valuable as trade bait: we'll get more in trade value for it than we would as cash.

And, of course, trading anything with the backwards infidels is...not likely to occur anyway.

Alright, so I made both deals and I stopped again

Reason :
We have Horses in Lyons' 2nd ring. Do we want to whip a Monument next turn ?

Close by resources :
Spoiler :

I'll play the end of the set once this issue is discussed. It shouldn't change much to the overall micro if we want the Monument (whip Lyons at size 4).
The bad point is that it would delay our Galleys... Maybe too much ? I guess Lyons is hard pressed to build galleys if we want to ship the army on T134. We wouldn't have the horse tile contribute to the Russian conquest anyways.

Interesting resource locations. Looks like they were designed to eliminate any "rush" gambits.

I don't think it's worth trying to improve those horses yet. Since they're on another--uninhabited--landmass, they are vulnerable to barbarians. We'd have to put a sentry on the pasture to protect them.

You have some white city-locator dots on one of the maps too. One of them captures both Iron and Fish, but nothing useful in the first ring.

We could put a city directly on the Iron. That's a decent production site, with Fish and some hills. It would also let us build Swords. Does our invasion-prep plan include a settler we could drop off there so we could bring some Swords with us to Moscow?

Of course, that city would probably need sentry too, so maybe it's not worth it for Operation Great Lighthouse.

To answer BiC's question: No, my first thought is that the Monument in Lyons isn't a priority.

We're on a tight schedule for war preparations. A monument there will delay a galley by ~5 turns, the time it takes to grow 1 pop. Maybe consider it later as 2F3H1C tile is decent and pays the Monument in 15+15 turns... we'll have to see.

I played to T124 : gold from trades gave us Construction that turn.

Some bad things happenned...
1- We're Isabella's worst ennemies : -4 diplo for religion and -4 diplo for trading with her worst ennemies : she's annoyed.
2- Lost a galley in the North East a turn or two after unloading the worker. That's... pretty bad :(

Screenies :
Spoiler :

There may be a lot more land than we expect North of Willem to "protect" the Russians. The map seems designed to make Moscow hard to access.

Well done. Meeting barbarian galley is bound to happen, on the good side, our scouting WBs are still alive.:)

The tile SE of Moscow is both adjacent to a lake and coast, that's one of the landing options, we will find out whether the NE or SE is closer soon.

We can sell Polytheism to cathy (40g) and Ragnar(30g), plus demand 30g from our friend William. Hopefully one of Cathy, William, and Joao are researching Monarchy now, they are researching something big for sure (CoL most likely, could also be Monarchy, low chance on MC and Aes).

Madviking have not visited the forum for quite a few days. Could you bring it forward until kossin is available, BIC? Or Snaaty, how's your attempt on the HOF mode?

Good turnset!

Too bad about the Galley...5 failed battle rounds in a row?!

Do we have another Galley in the area to take vengeance?

I sure hope Duckweed is right about a northern route to Moscow. The good news is we can hit her from 1SE of Moscow the turn after dropping off the assault team!

We just whipped a galley in Paris so, yes, we can go collect the xp from the barb galley :)

by the way, I made a deal with Willem : fish for 1gpt. I've marked the deals near Paris with the turn they were made so we don't forget when we can cancel them :)
I guess we should mark demands as well.

Fish? On an archipelago map? I bet that trade deal is worth about 10g. :)

Also, it look like the English have 7T to go on Math. Can we sell Vicky the last couple turns' research for all her cash? I don't know how the AI values techs, so I'm not sure when to make the offer.

^Currency is the best tech to boost economy in most cases, it already brings us 15C + 2G per turn.

@BIC
The barbarian galley still has 1.2 strength after the battle, so it will have 1.6*1.1=1.76 (combat I promotion) strength, our healthy galley won't have safe odd even on defense, so only try to defend the seafood when the barbarian galley moves toward our seafood resources. It's no good to move our galleys outside the culture border (we don't need to see more map at the risk of losing galleys), the reason why I asked you to move back the galley scouting Viking land.

Marble city has the potential to produce 1 more galley to compensate the loss (1 more 1 pop whip).

Good points, Duckweed.

Also, to be clear, I think the Fish deal is a great move; I'm just surprised that it's even available when Fish are so plentiful on this map. I'm sure Willem will find some Fish of his own soon enough and cancel after few turns...hence the total of 10g (1gpt x 10T). No criticism whatsoever of BiC spotting the trade opportunity!

Re Barb galleys: Isn't there some rule about how far from their spawn point a barb galley will venture if undisturbed?

nope, the coredll wasnt the problem in my case. it even looks like i already tried to replace it last time with the original:rolleyes:

-> i still get the same error message:
some files modified by some strange carpetum-mod prevent me loading hof files (it must be someting included in the ffh2 package, maybe the better naval ai modmod or something:confused:)

-> but my ffh files seem to work with the original coredll as well:lol:, only the ****hof files dont...

Yes, you're right... I didn't stick to the spirit of the plan, there...

@ Fish deal :
I won't take the credits for it :) Duckweed mentionned the deals first.
The added gpt is very useful, though : for sure !

Re Barb galleys: Isn't there some rule about how far from their spawn point a barb galley will venture if undisturbed?

Barbarian galley might pillage his net, which enabled the trade.

The behavior of Barbarian galleys are different from land unit. They move around randomly outside civil culture and won't enter the culture border unless they see net or naval unit. Therefore keeping our galleys away from border will decrease the chance of attracting barbarian galleys.

Hmmm... That depends. What are your expectations, Kossin ?
Do you prefer to go to war with Nukes, Mech Inf, Stealth Bombers, some more outdated stuff ?

...

The next 2 sets can be timed roughly along these lines :
1- finish the army build up ;
2- ship the army

1st part is clearly doable before you're available. 2nd part maybe, as well. I'll be a bit busy this week, though.

We're kind of lag in the progress, only 2 months left and we're probably still on the early half way. I have more interest in reading other team threads when they are still playing.

Finishing the force buildup is quite straightforward.
