SGOTM 13 - Plastic Ducks

Other discussion looks good. As for who is after Cathy, wouldn't we want Willem next? He's near the top of the leaderboard, and our then-veteran troops will already be in his vicinity.

Yes, William will be next target, however, the initial SOD is far from enough, even not enough to wipe out Cathy. Before Macemans are available, we have to expect the loss of many cats. Also new conquered cities need guard.

@kossin

Just a remind, we could demand cash from cautious AIs now.

Good luck!

I'm guessing 20-30 cash without looking at the test game right now.

EDIT: Upon testing, I managed to get as high as 50 gold in the test game. 30 should be safe for everyone except Pleased/Joao/Cathy.

Done&uploaded.

Monarchy cost us a bit more than anticipated because Cathy finished her next tech right before I traded for it and picked Construction next. I demanded cash from Vicky, Ragnar and Isabella (30 each) however.
Spoiler :

I screwed up a bit while picking off a barb warrior with an Axe and 1 galley (2 Axes) is lacking 1 movement point
Spoiler :

I stopped right before DoW... we'd need to decide what to do with the late galley. We can use it as a scout or unload the axes in the forest or DoW next turn instead. In any case, we'll need at least 1 full round of bombardment, Moscow is at 2692 culture meaning 60% defense.

Good set.

Since a full round of bombardment is needed anyway, I don't see why you'd need to delay the DoW.

Depending on what you see when you drop off the cats, do you think you might want to unload the last boatload of axes onto the forest 2W1S of Novgorod? They could be unloaded from atop Novgorod's Fish, thus slowing down that city's growth and whip potential....

Yes for the galley, no to the axes. They'd be too far from the SoD and thus in risk of being counterattacked more easily.

I'd unload the Axes 2E1S of Moscow, in case Cathy has a unit (Axe or whatever) SE of Moscow - this way the whole SoD would be together and protected.

good set.:goodjob:

concerning the open points:

1. galley on fish: yes
2. spreading army: no, keep them together. unloading the remaining 2 axes onto the forest 63 from moskau seems best.
3. declare asap. bombarding is needed

something else:

i would raze the fish next turn. then i would use 1 galley and make a blockade mission on the northeastern russian city -> this city is cut off from the russian trade network. no axes or worse, chars can be produced there, only archers

...

another short set would be fine, ending with the taking of moskau. then we can decide if we keep warring with kathy or making peace (if possible)

Good points Snaaty!

However there seems to be a road on the incense so there'll be a road network while Moscow is in revolt. I forget if she'll lose her Copper though with Moscow gone.

I'm fine with playing another mini-set tonight to DoW, land the troops and do 1 turn of bombardment if there's no issue right now. If the city is weakly defended then I'll take it as well - still scared from my poor RNG luck from SGOTM12

Looks good.

Yes to DOW immediately, it does not matter whether to unload the last galley this turn, 1 Axe is running out of moving point and can only stay on board this turn.

A few things need attention.

1. Promote 2 Axes to Combat I immediately for stack protection, one Axe can be promoted through medic line, another one can be promoted further with Shock.
2. William is researching Alpha and about 150~250 B from completion, any good way to stop him from getting Monarchy from Vicky? There's no need to keep Mediation, I think it's good to trade it for the 50g.
3. The single settler seems risky for me. We need an Axe for possible barbarian.
4. We can use galley bridge for a short time to sent the reinforcement in the fastest way.
5. Our single worker could be sent to Moscow to do some chop.
6. Galleys will be enough in short time, so Tours can also be assigned to produce land units.

I don't think we need to run a short set. After Moscow, keep taking SP. Last city is on hill, we need reinforcement to deal with it. Don't think it's necessary to pillage the net and block. Archer is worse than Axe.

^^^

1. Yes
2. Gift Alphabet to Vicky? lol
3. Yea I know =\ I tried timing the Axe from Moscow but it was too slow to be ready at the same time (not enough overflow to complete the next turn)
4. Yes, I already set 2 galleys like that for the settler... further galleys can be placed the same way to wipe out Willem quickly.
5. Indeed, we might need some infra (gran, LH, barrack) and then troops.
6. Tours could build Catapults for bombardment only or Garrison troops or get a barrack and do regular troop spam?

If taking Moscow goes well, I'll move on SP. If not, I'll stop to re-consider.

Archer is especially worse on hill.

I'll look some more at the save tonight and might play some more turns if I'm satisfied with the plan I make in my head.

Slightly less lucky with St-Peters, we lost 2 Axes... 1 was my fault, I gambled with a hurt Axe trying to gain the city earlier when there was only 1 defender left and lost.
Spoiler :

Game is now uploaded, we're doing pretty good.
Spoiler :

OTOH, we have to do something about Amsterdam soonish, it's about to pop its culture and will hurt our Canal city somewhat.

We don't have enough Axes to continue fighting right now but Moscow and St-Peter will be superb factories shortly (Moscow almost ready!)

Very good, Moscow and SP are brilliant cities. A settled GM in Moscow!:D

We may want to whip a settler from SP to claim the gem site. If SP does not starve after coming out of revolt, whip the settler before granary.

I'd suggest to keep taking the western Russian city with 3 cats and 3 Axes (including the Axe in Moscow. Send 2 cats to canal city, plus the reinforcement from home, we should be able to launch the war at William in less than 10 turns. Hopefully he is not researching Feudalism now!

Many cities are at the edge of unhappiness, we need to produce more warriors before moving out those new cats and Axes.

Wow! Great set!

I agree with trying to get the Gems up and going with a quick whip from St. Pete.

Nice work!

Took a careful look at the save. Here's some more thoughts.

1.To send the reinforcements as fast as possible

Switch the build in Rh to galley and whip it next turn, this galley can fetch the units in RH and Paris. 1 pop whip the galley from Lyons plus the galley near Orleans, these 3 galleys are able to transport 6 units to front line. Plus the 2 in canal city and 2 cats from SP, that's should be enough to take Amsterdam.

2. We should be able to catch the Russian worker near SP. There's 2 ways

Move a unit SW to block his way back and 2 heavily wounded cats SE to catch the worker next turn and heading to canal city through Dutch land.

Move 2 units 1W, the worker should try to escape back to the western Russian city. We can send 2 cats to canal city through Moscow using a galley. I am favoring this way as 2 cats are able to recover their health in boat.

3. Do we want to connect the Iron to produce some xBows? They are safe stack defenders and also pretty good at taking cities. The eastern double clams and Iron site (all 3 resources in the 1st ring) looks nice. We can whip a settler from Rh and use the idle WB there.

SP will not starve: 5 food neutral tiles, 1 @+1 and 2 @-1 means neutral food at size 7 in the first ring.

I suppose it will not be very well defended. Still, we need a turn or two to heal troops before moving forward.

Many cities are at the edge of unhappiness, we need to produce more warriors before moving out those new cats and Axes.
Yea... I tried to keep a balance of troops coming as it's more important to have troops right now. As long as we don't fall too far behind we should be fine. I'll use some overflow on warriors in turns to come.

Took a careful look at the save. Here's some more thoughts.

1.To send the reinforcements as fast as possible

Agree with Rh galley. I wanted to grab the worker and bring him to improve the horses in Lyons at the same time...
Lyons galley: just what I wanted to do.

Lyons galley goes to Paris and picks up 2 troops in 2 turns.
Orleans galley picks up 2 troops from Orleans.
Rh galley picks up worker + catapult, drops worker by Lyon and goes to pick up a 3rd troop from Orleans.

The Axe and Cata in Canal will go pick off the barb who hopefully comes in our direction to grab lvl 3 (Shock for defense).

2. We should be able to catch the Russian worker near SP. There's 2 ways

Move a unit SW to block his way back and 2 heavily wounded cats SE to catch the worker next turn and heading to canal city through Dutch land.

We might as well only move 1 troop 1W,

If he goes east, the only way to catch him is with troops sent east, this scenario is unlikely has Cathy doesn't have cities in that direction.

What I'd do:
-send the 2 badly injured Cats to Moscow
-send the rest 1W. They need to heal and healing 1t later will not affect anything.

If she deletes the worker (I've seen the AI do that a few times), then we lose nothing.

3. Do we want to connect the Iron to produce some xBows? They are safe stack defenders and also pretty good at taking cities. The eastern double clams and Iron site (all 3 resources in the 1st ring) looks nice. We can whip a settler from Rh and use the idle WB there.

There are few options here. We don't absolutely need XBows although as you say they are quite nice.

The free wb:
-could be used for the gems city, depending on the availability of food there (fish).
-we can use him for St-Petersburg, the lake fish could be improved (and give the Sheep to gems city instead)... this'd be insane food.
-set up double clams-iron as you say. This uses up hammers for the war however so I don't like it too much... we want to take out WvO before he gets Feudalism and he has at least 1 city on a hill.

Comments in bold.

Moscow needs to produce quite a few units, probably 2 pop whip an Axe and then several warriors. I saw a Russian galley in the screenshot of taking Moscow, you probably need to send a trireme there.

I am still undecided whether domination or conquest is faster. I assume a 500AD~1000AD victory. Therefore, it's at least 60 turns left. New city takes about 30~40 turns to be able to contribute to the war, so the Iron site might be on the edge or could help quite a lot if late victory occurs. Iron also enable Swordman, which is more efficient against catapult.

Regarding the worker in Rh, I feel unsafe to send it to pasture the horse, the chance of existence of barbarian on that island is quite high.

We can sign peace with Cathy after taking her western city, Not sure if it's possible to twist Calendar from her. Remember to send an unit to the COW tile of Ros when negotiating peace treaty.

Last, I think you already know, that barbarian warrior = 1exp for cat + 1exp for Axe.

No more comments, good to go.:)

I'm almost certain Conquest will be faster here:

we're at 3% land and WvO has the most land, at 6%.

Right now, all AIs together have 273 land tiles.

64% of 933 tiles is 598 tiles, we'd need all that land and then twice as much... not gonna happen. Conquest is the way to go I fear.

At comments above:

-Moscow: Yes, I agree. We're quite low on Axes[5] at the moment, but better on Catas[7]. 50/50 would be better.

-Good point about horse and that's only 1F... alright, a new city it is on iron. Maybe later we can get it pastured. We'll see.

-Yup yup, I'll whip a few Axes in Moscow after the Barracks is done. 1 can go scare Cathy a bit. Maybe I should put 1 turn of research into Calendar, there's a fair amount of Calendar happies available.

-Barb warrior: yes! Cata first then Axe cleans up is what I had in mind.

Might play in a little bit, I still need to study the save a bit.

Alright, a few more turns played. We should be ready to assault Amsterdam shortly.

No losses whatsoever this round!

I've been having a little bit of difficulty keeping up in Galleys, it seems we still need some more. There's a good shipment of troops left home still. (see power chart, we're climbing fast!) One galley is going to the 2-clams-iron city spot with a settler and will take the worker with them. It should be settled in ~3 turns iIrc.

I've added a lot of warriors but also a lot of whips :D

The barb was cooperative as well.
Spoiler :

As was Cathy... we actually got 2 workers from her... and a 3rd might be possible.
Spoiler :

It turns out WvO was after Calendar. Hopefully he turned to MC next.
Spoiler :

Captured. It will be very nice when we add another fish net.
Spoiler :

This is Amsterdam: good news, there are few units in it. Bad news: 60% culture and walls mean a lot of bombardment. We will need a few specialized Catas to bombard it faster. (15 shots otherwise is a PITA)
Spoiler :

Our forces in Canal city. They will need to move as the city is in danger of revolt very soon (33% dutch, WvO's borders just popped this turn) - or maybe not, we do have a lot of units there.
Spoiler :

Others. 3 AIs with Calendar now.
Spoiler :

There is one problem with Cathy as well: her borders expanded and we have to cross through her borders. Moving the Axes and Catas on that side will be troublesome otherwise... we have only 1 galley over there so even shipping them over to The Hague is a long process. Maybe with 2 Galleys we'd be good?

So... we need a few more galleys. 1 going to Moscow, and 3 more going to the attack on Amsterdam (land NE of the city).

I can play the next set tomorrow or Friday, depending on if I get called in to replace at work. It'd probably be somewhat shorter, mostly capturing Amsterdam to get us going against WvO.

I've played 31 turns straight, if someone can step in for at least 1 set after that, I'm sure AlanH wouldn't object ;)

If not, I'm still good to go for 2 more weeks before vacation! :D

~~~
I'm a bit puzzled by OSS... their last 3 sets: April 6, 20 and 29 accomplished 19 turns. I hope for them they stop trying to micro the start and start focusing on the long game, it takes quite a while to play each turn already!
