6,050 Years in the Life of a Confused City-State

Stay tuned then :) I just assume I'm usually on when where everyone else seems to be (Canada/US) it's night-time :p

3040 BC (nearly a thousand years after the founding of Wellitawadam DC)

The countryside of Nethermericanada Zealand, near the southern border

MoreEpicThanYou: This is where our warrior saw the strange mineral, sire. He said it was a colour he couldn't give a name to, but it looked like the colour should be called 'copper'. Remember the village that taught us how to sail? It's one of their words. It means 'sharp'.
General Olaf: Interesting. Does this stuff have a use?
Inohotep (running up to the men): I think it does, General. I've had my scientists working at the site, with some of the Guild of Engineers and Smiths, and they believe it could be used for weaponry - it's robust and would just shear through the stuff that fool Tokugawa most likely has. At our last check, he was still using wooden weaponry.
MoreEpicThanYou: That's right. This could provide us with a significant advantage against that fool. Our priests have studied the words of SouthernKing, and they say when we research Writing, he won't even sign Open Borders!
General Olaf: Writing? Open Borders? The musings of priests are a mystery to me. Nearly a thousand years ago, for example. I heard a strange voice in my head, and all they could tell me was it was probably a narrator! How do they know what all these things are?!
Red_Spy: Indeed, who knows?
Narrator: Why do I even try? Just keep telling yourself, Narrator: They're in a game. They have no way of knowing you even exist.
General Olaf: Did you hear that, councillors?
Inohotep: Er, no. Hear what?
General Olaf: Ah, never mind. It must just be my old age.

Soon afterwards, back at Olaf's palace

Red_Spy: Sire, the Master of Production recommends that we employ slaves to make their tasks easier and make our nation prosper. It will make some pople unhappy, but he believes the action will put our city on the world stage.
General Olaf: Done! Give the order to announce it on the streets!
Red_Spy: I warn you sire, there will be anarchy for years after this.
General Olaf: Ah, heck, just do it.

Civ'ed, the culture advisor, bursts into the throne room.
Civ'ed: I have been speaking with our demographers, General. Their graphing shows something astonishing, sire; within the next 'turn' (as the priests call it), our culture will influence a much larger area around the city!
General Olaf: That's great, Civ'ed. Will we gain control of the 'copper' resource we scouted earlier?
Civ'ed: No, sire. To control that in any decent amount of time, we'll need to find a way to influence the tribes around us. The Master of Production has such an idea, General. He and his guild of engineers and smiths propose to build a great Wall around the edge of our lands - it would both repel the hostile tribes and increase our cultural prestige. And with that, we can control the copper in short order!
General Olaf: Have Inohotep direct his scientists towards finding a way to do this thing, Civ'ed.
Civ'ed: As good as done, General.

That makes me the Head Priest I think.

awesome, i love being research advisor
For Science!

Nice update! Mention something about my recommendation to kill the Japanese and get some soldiers in the next update.

why wasn't I mentioned in the update :(

Nothing financial-related happened. You'll appear as soon as there's a financial screenshot (I've played till about 200 AD and am regularly updating almost every day) so you'll turn up soon.

@VeBear, done! You can be Master of Production for sure :goodjob:

@Sparthage: I wasn't sure if that was the right term. Thanks for the tip, and you'll turn up whenever something demographic-related appears next :)

hoplitejoe is the head priest :goodjob:

And Yoshi, you may suggest a farmer but I can put you in as Head of Espionage - I think I got Alpha pretty quickly from memory, so you'd be in fairly soon :)

Oh, also: Of couse I haven't built units yet, it's only Turn 24 :p

Still building my second Workboat!

2680 BC, General Olaf's throne room, in a Council session. All the advisors are sitting around a long trestle table.

Inohotep: We have discovered the secrets of building in stone, sire!
General Olaf: Brilliant, but how is that useful?
Inohotep: Well, for a start, we can use candles indoors now.
veBear: Er, and more importantly, it allows us to build that protective wall we had planned to build. Timber just wouldn't have done.
General Olaf: And control that copper?
veBear: Much more quickly.
MoreEpicThanYou: And then we can build an army to crush that maniac Tokugawa!
Ilduce: We'll need a large treasury to ensure our city survives the war. I recommend finding some way to do this before declaring war.
Inohotep: I'll put it on our agenda, Ilduce.

I'll put it on our agenda, Ilduce.

I often run into financial trouble during war. And, by the way, it's not Pottery I ended up getting - it's Currency. Heading towards Construction and 'pults is the general plan and it was only a slight detour. You'll see why very soon.

Today's update - part 2

2600 BC, in General Olaf's throne room

Omega: A foreigner here to see you, General!
General Olaf: Ask Trexeric to show him in. Make sure he sees the army outside doing drills.
Trexeric (peeping in the large double doors): He's waiting outside, sire. The army didn't impress him, he's still talking philosophy; has been since he turned up.
General Olaf: Let him in. I'd like to meet this learned philosopher of yours, Trexeric.

The philosopher enters calmly on foot.

Philosopher: The mighty Mongolian Empire greets you. I am Kublai Khan. Ponder this, if you will, General Olaf: Which is the stone that supports the bridge? Now, shall we have peace?
General Olaf: We shall - you seem much more agreeable than that Tokugawa fellow. I assume you've met him?
Kublai Khan: I have. I would act with caution towards him, if I were you. I, for one, don't trust him as far as I could throw him. And my subjects call me 'the Wimp'.
General Olaf: Need some help quelling a rebellion?
Kublai Khan: No - of course not! My people are loyal - they just like poking fun at me. :p
General Olaf: I can't say mine are the same, but I understand what you mean. It's been a pleasure meeting you, Kublai. If you need to leave, don't let me detain you. :)
Kublai Khan: Thank you, General Olaf. May the peace last a thousand years.
General Olaf: With the long lives the heads of state around here seem to live, that's not long, Kublai.

Kublai, ignoring the last comment, leaves silently.

General Olaf: Do you trust that one, Red Spy?
Red Spy: I know what you want me to say, General. I'm the javelin champion of the city. And I think I do trust him. But not with our lives - I'd recommend finding a way to monitor his actions. Have Inohotep work on it, and when he's finished his research on it, employ a city person to take charge of the operations.
General Olaf: Thank you for the advice, Red Spy. I'll have the men chosen for the project named in your honour.
Red Spy: It's my pleasure, General.

2120 BC, at the spot near the copper

veBear: We have built the protective wall we designed in 2680 BC, sire!
General Olaf: That's amazing! We'll control that copper in no time!
MoreEpicThanYou: And then... Tokugawa will have a nasty surprise on his border.
Nearby farmer: Indeed...
veBear: For our next major project, General, my architects have designed statues that will allow us to harness the power of the sea. I'll have them started at once.
General Olaf: Thank you, veBear.
MoreEpicThanYou: But what will happen to the military?
General Olaf: All in good time, MoreEpicThanYou. There are some matters our Research Advisor, Inohotep, has to finish first...
