Oh, and props to DoveNegets. I didn't think Civ4 images were created with the same techniques used in Civ5.

lol. This is why some people, myself included, think this thread is just another flash point for CiV hate. Now that the beloved CIV is incriminated...

Yeah, but I hope that this isn't the dominant view. This thread serves a variety of agendas--some like to learn how the images were made; some want to prosecute the artist(s) and devs; and some just like the novelty of the hunt.

The most amazing part of this is the keyboard is obviously backwards

edit: someone already pointed this out. Well I'm gonna go find some more dirt, great thread!

As soon as I purchased Polynesia, I knew I've seen that Moai picture before, and I found it pretty quickly.

I couldn't find the image for the Maori warrior, I think I might have found the 3 feathers on his head, for what it's worth (after something around 2 hours of looking for bare chested Samoans it better be worth something).

Anyone has any idea what sort of weapon is the Maori Warrior holding?

I noticed that the castle image in the manual is different:

The granary image in the manual too is different from the in-game icon. Does anyone know why they would create two icons for the same building?

I found two different chariots (not counting the Egyptian one), so there seem to be several of these alternates in existence.

they produced the manual well before the game was finalized.

A bit more on Copyright and to try to explain this situation.

In light of having 4 sources that report that Firaxis did not pursue permision for their works (of which at least 3 think they should had asked permision, the other being a stockphoto house gave a me sort "meh" answer, apparently they let these things slide).

Letting it slide is actually the way to go for these things. It's still likely unethical, but pursuing legal action is odd in these sort of cases.

Also everyone is doing it.

From videogames we love like Arcanum:

NPCFrank.png

That's no easter egg, that's Daniel Day Lewis

To other games we love like Victoria:
Mechanisation.jpg

01-ford-t.jpg

That image dating from 1907, so it's public domain... I think, it belongs to Ford, I'm not sure if they still pursue copyright for it.

To other games by Paradox:

The copyright is still there http://www.famouspictures.org/mag/index.php?title=Flag_on_the_Reichstag

And many more, did you know the first 2 Duke Nukem games stole graphics from Turrican as well as other games?, you know now:

And here's more, it's not only the videogame industry, but the clothing industry, the design industry and advertising industry (boy they love stealing alright): http://youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com/blog3/

And if you think that's bad, both Electronica and Rap had their humble beginnings by ripping off 6 brief seconds from a little known song by The Winstons, perhaps you've already have heard about it, if not here's a neat little documentary that explains it best:

Yes, that sample is even used in the PowerPuff Girls intro song, that's were you've heard it before, Powerpuff go!

No one pursued legal action for it, still not technically legal though. Music now has some pretty strict regulations about sampling music (you have to pay for the rights now). But this is mostly because music companies have better lawyers and lobbyists. The Music industry pushes constantly for copyright protection so that no one downloads their music ilegally. But some of their finest have been caught stealing before. Among artists that have stolen, you even have staunch anti-download advocates, incluiding Metallica, who have also (allegedly) stolen around 3 songs themselves (making it legal to download those 3??).

http://www.cracked.com/article_18500_the-5-most-famous-musicians-who-are-thieving-bastards.html

And here lies my main beef with the whole copyright issue, the fact that Civilization V has to date one of the most sophisticated forms of copyright protection (Steam). In other words, you cannot copy what they have done, that would be ilegal, but they can copy from you if they wish. It's been over a month since this issue came up, yet there has been no signs of Firaxis caring much about this issue (but did you know Civ World is comming?!!). Photographers and other artists do not have multi million dollar companies backing them up.

We make the culture that we live in, mass forms of media such as the ones companies or politicians manage have a huge impact in our perception of morals and ethics. In a culture were it's alright not care a whole lot about forms of cheating, or even celebrating them, is it really that surprising to see the public disregarding corporate copyright claims?

It's nice to hear K Billy DJ (Steven Wright) from Reservoir Dogs narrating that. :p

that's a bit of an overstatement.
wax tailor samples that documentary in their song once upon a past: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_21-ip0FjNE

meta sampling ftw

Perhaps. It is weird that so many artists used the same sample and did not paid a single cent or credited for it (a popular sample at that). I think it's just an example of something similar to this situation when an advertising agency uses the "Amen Break" just because they feel it's legal to do so (even though it's not really legal, it's just that no one is going to take them to court).

I feel however that this unusual situation of "legal but not legal" gives way to another interesting situation: anyone could retool any of the art assets of Civ V for any other purpose and it would put Firaxis a bit on the hotspot. If they claim copyright violations, then this would also come up.

Not that I would do so, but hypothetically... could this be a thing?

I reckon it's a taiaha, mmm hmmm.

This is correct - the weapon is a Taiaha, a Maori club which is typically carved of wood with a Greenstone club/speartip on the end. It is said to contain immense Mana, and as such you should never let it touch the ground while wielding it. [/Maori History Lesson]

Mana being a word sort of meaning or having a side effect of spiritual power/authority/strength/prestige
