[RFC] Rome, the Conquering Empire

Praetorian legions from all corners of the Roman Empire assembled now in order to deal with the barbarian hordes streaming northward. Legions from Burdigala, Brunidisium, and Roma itself with armed gladiators marched now to assemble on the hills on the banks of Alysian River. Scouts reported that the barbarian hordes streaming northward were doing so because of a plague in the south and were armed with iron axes. Troubling news, but the Roman's had axes of their own and the Praetorians held the high ground to the east, the banks to the west, and Lugdunum's hills to the north. Once the barbarians fell into the forested valley below, they would have nowhere to go, trapped in the bottleneck with the Pyrennes mountains on one side on the Romans in front of them.

Not only that but the legendary commander Aurus Lupa, the Gold Wolf, was leading them, although being a hard as nails commander garnered respect from all of the army men.

A barbarian group of swordsmen attempted to assualt the Roman axemen and legions on the western banks of the Jango river. The axemen of the Roman cohorts drove forth and dueled to the death with the barbarian swordsmen, slaughtering them as they tried to retreat back across the river. The remaining bodies were dumped in the river and for three days the river ran red with blood and black with fly covered bodies.

As the Praetorian legions waited for the barbarian onslaught, Rome descended into total chaos as the general Aulus Numidius rose up and declared himself dictator for life, effectively sealing out the Roman Senate. Supporters of the senate and the men of Numidius's army clashed in the streets of Roma as anarchy rang out. The Gold Wolf who sat at the hold of Lugdunum and waited for the barbarians to come heeded no cry from either side to help them.

When the barbarians marched into the valley, the Gold Wolf issued a decree saying that those that surrendered would be spared and sold into slavery, while those that did not would have their mouths sewn shut and drowned in the Meditteranean Sea. The message was delivered to the barbarian leader Alacrus in prompt fashion as the Gold Wolf waited for the response.

The messenger's head was returned by nightfall, along with a sword sticking out of his left eye socket. For that insult, Lupa ordered no quarter to be given.

Censors carried on their duty nonetheless as anarchy reigned, bringing back reports of the empire's population close to five hundred fifty thousand civilians. It was grand news indeed after the capture of the Celtic town of Duructorium.

More barbarian soldiers advanced into the valley south of Lugdunum. The hardened Praetorians were not scared of a little stabbing match with the swordsmen, but the mercenaries were getting uncomfortable in their current situation.

The swordsmen were the first to attack the legions of Roma, and for that they paid the price. Many of them were slaughtered, and Aurus kept his promise and sewed the survivor's mouths shut and had them drowned in the sea.

The artist Li Po, one of the men credited for writing some of the best Roman poetry and literature, created a vast monument to the conquering Praetorian armies of Rome, creating a monument sure to increase the cultural power of Brundisium. Many of the Greeks from around the Peloponessian Peninsula came over to Brudisium and letting the Greek territory fall into disarray as they left, the former lands taken by Roma.

Numidius was assassinated by loyal Roman senators, which were in turn killed off by Aurus Lupa, who then siezed the crown of dictator for life. Taking the colors purple, he became known as the People's Caesar.

I congratulate you on another fine chapter!

Dont invade greece. Try to stay peacefull and win space victory.

WHAAA? That's the third worst possible thing to do as Rome! KILL THE GREEKS!!!

For those of you who are wondering, cultural and diplomatic are the second and first worst things to do. :D

Greeks fall soon unfortunately. :mwaha:

Space Race I was not going to do as I was initially planning on a giant world conquest spree, until my nation kind of collapsed several dozen times. So that got changed....

The largest building project in the world for this time, the Wall of the Golden Wolves stretched across a fair portion of the European subcontinent, protecting the borders of the Roman Empire from barbarian attack and incursions, events that had happened many times and been repulsed each time by the Praetorian legions. This construction was hailed as a marvel of the world, and lavish feasts and banquets took place soon after it's construction.

Now that the hordes of barbarians had been cast out of the Empire and it's frontier areas, the newly crowned Caesar Aulus Lupa set to work building up the Empire's infrastructure to both support a large military and a larger population.

The city of Lentia was ordered built by Aulus Lupa's son Scipius Lupa, the Grey Wolf of Rome. This was primarily to expand the borders of the Roman empire and carve out a foothold in wild Germania.

Greek, Roman, Carthaginian, and Babylonian thinkers congregated in Roma itself and contemplated many things, unlocking the secrets of philosophical thought and reasoning, inscribing it down on tablets. The people of Roma stuidied these new teachings and the different sects of philosophy that rose up, such as Stoicism and others. Philosophy also found a place in many of the education teaching institutions of Roma.

With all the new research and philosophical and teachings being inscribed upon tablets, Emperor Scipius ordered a gigantic library built to hold the vast stores of knoweledge of all of the Roman people and their accomplishments. This library would be constructed out of the finest marble harvested on the Italian peninsula for the construction of this magnificent project.

Scipius continued his father's policy of building up the infrastructure of the Empire to support the growing civilization, and expanded the cultural creations of Roma through the construction of grand theatres and other marvelous projects.

Around this time, the inventor Sophranius Gracchus by chance happened to invent a working compass, now able to tell the cardinal directions. Although the exact details are unknown to scholars, the advent of this compass allowed more precise construction of walls that needed to go precisely north, south, east, or west.

Roman military generals convened with Greek mapmakers, trading approxmitely two million gold pieces for the assorted maps that the Greeks had collected and created. Roman generals were especially interested in discovering precisely where the cities of the Greek Leauge lay; the city states had fallen quite a way from where they had once been as the powerful rulers of the Meditteranean.

War was soon declared as Roman Praetorian legions marched near the Greek borders, the declaration of war arriving just before the Praetorians crossed the border area of Greece. A bloody war between the two nations was about to occur, and it would not be pretty.

Hope you enjoyed, and next time we get to see the demise of a power in the Meditteranean :).

Make sure you burn Sparta :D

Yeah, Sparte... not a good city. Plus, free fun for you! (Great chapter, by the way)

Please dont burn sparta.:cry::cry:

Praetorian legions marched upon Athenai, eager upon orders from Emperor Ulysses Lupa to dispatch the town with ease and conquer the rest of Greece in one fell swoop. The Greeks were not willing to go down easily though, and a major battle for the small rocky town clinging to the wind and rain lashed coast was about to see the fight of it's life.

After twenty days of heavy fighting in the attempt to take the town, Athenai was finally conquered. Two thousand legionarries were dead, almost half of an entire legion and an additional one struck down by unsporting warfare. For that, General Gaius Racchus took seven thousand Greek children and crucified them on Mount Olympia with their hands pointing towards the grave sites of the fallen Praetorians.

As the Praetorian legions marched southward to deal with the final Greek city state of Sparte, workers from Athenai earned the right to work as slaves for great Roma, overseen by Roman overseers who were fond of using their lashes on the slaves. Byzantion to the north had been taken over by the barbarians, but it's life would be short unless the barbarians retreated, and quickly at that.

Praetorian legions assembled in defensive lines outside of Sparte as the Greek city states collapsed into ash and dust. It would not be long now until the final tipping point caused a massive cascade of civil war.

Greece did collapse soon after, the last city states on the Peloponessian peninsula begging Roma to not lay siege to their city and conquer them. Roma did not deign to respond.

With the death of Emperor Ulysses, his son Octavius took the throne and proceeded to build the Pantheon in his father's honor as the last great project his father would build. Emperor Ulysses was interred in a tomb beneath the great building to be untouched by time.

The legions would not rest on their laurels of taking the Greek city states though; Byzantion was ordered to be captured by the Emperor, and the legions would follow that order to the letter.

Before they left Greece, a single slab of marble was erected at their abandoned camp. "Godspeed" it simply said.
