SGOTM 15 - Unusual Suspects

Yeah. Do. Whatever. Can't really keep up with everything. Or anything.
Spoiler :
Why did I have to get a life right now? Can't find the time to play even a gotm, much less a Sgotm. Oh well, maybe I get fired and get more time to Civ. One can only hope...

Well, I played to BW. The good news: We have copper! The bad news: We’ve lost 2 Warriors.

Everything else went pretty much according to the micro plan.

Turn 34: Lotus moves North onto the hill and gains sight of Osaka, guarded by a Protective archer:

Turn 35: Drona moves to the West, but can’t get around Babylon’s borders:

Turn 40: Islam is founded in distant land :

Spoiler :
Unusual13.jpg

Babylon’s culture completely blocks Drona’s passage, so he moves back onto a hill and discovers:

Spoiler :
A (promoted) barb archer
Unusual14.jpg

Turn 41: Even on the hill, the wounded Drona loses to the barb archer:

Spoiler :
Unusual15.jpg

I apologize, since I forgot losing a warrior to barbs was a pause condition at this point, so I continued on. After being unable to pass Babylon, I should have healed Drona near his border. (Which is what I was intending to do on that hill.)

Also this turn Tokugawa sends an archer out toward our land:

Spoiler :
Unusual16.jpg

Turn 43: Our new warrior (Deva) moves south to the marble, to spawnbust and keep an eye on Tokugawa's archer. Unfortunately, upon scaling the hill he encounters both a lion and barb warrior on adjacent tiles. The next turn, he defeated the lion, but was too wounded to survive the barb warrior. (Sorry didn't get a screenshot)

Turn 44: Bronze Working is in, so where is the copper?

Spoiler :
Very close!
Unusual17.jpg

I don't know if the barb will enter our culture at this point. Worker #2 and our just completed warrior are both on the grass hill NW of Bollywood. They have not moved for this turn yet.

In another development that is likely to be a problem, Babylon built the Great Wall this turn.

Tokugawa has not sent a worker to farm the corn, and Osaka is now garrisoned with 2 archers:

Open questions/issues:

1. Wounded barb warrior (Edit: He has 1.6 hp remaining) on our southern border.
2. Do we send the warrior and worker in Bollywoood to connect the copper? (I think so since TGW will be sending barbs our way).
3. What should the worker in Delhi do? Continue the farm?
4. Since we already have copper, where do we send the settler?

We have switched to Slavery, and Delhi should be able to whip the Monument next turn.

I have not uploaded the save yet, pending finishing this turn.

Babylon built the Great Wall, which means possibly more barbarians from the north.

With Babylon so far north, blocking him off is less of an issue. Send the settler to the grassland gems. The tile is too good to pass up.

I agree that is a good site. Especially since it is on the coast and could be reached without leaving our culture (almost). The other option is crabs/bananas/marble site if we are going to build the Oracle. Although I agree the commerce from the gems makes it a higher priority.

One other question: What do we research next? The Wheel, I presume (edit: to hook up the copper. We probably should get a couple more warriors out before it's connected0.

Yes, definitely The Wheel to connect copper.

Gems are better than crabs. If we're right, we have more time to make the Oracle than normal. Probably not the 37 turns it will take Bollywood's culture to expand though...

To reiterate: the things we need to decide so I can finish the open moves for this turn:

1. Where to send Worker #2 in Bollywood?

I could send him (with the warrior following) to 1NW of the copper tile. If the barb warrior enters our culture, he could beat a hasty retreat. Alternatively, he could head 1E and chop, or continue to mine the hill where he is.

2. What to do with Worker #1 in Delhi?

He could continue to farm, or head 1NW to chop (another fast worker after the Monument?)

Edit: I could also upload the save here without making these decisions.

I can't tell where the barb warrior near Bollywood is. Can you upload a screenshot of it? If there's risk to the worker, I favor finishing the current mine, since we'll be able to use it soon.

Delhi won't be growing to pop 3 that quickly - go ahead and chop first.

Since it is late, and I don't want it to wait until tomorrow night, I decided to upload the save:

I can't tell where the barb warrior near Bollywood is. Can you upload a screenshot of it? If there's risk to the worker, I favor finishing the current mine, since we'll be able to use it soon.

The barb warrior is standing on the marble tile in the t44 screenshot. The worker would be 3 tiles away from the barb after moving NW of the copper.

As a fast worker, could we do this?

SW-SE-chop-cancel
If warrior enters culture, continue chop until endangered, then return to mine
If warrior does not enter culture, move to copper-mine-cancel
Then if warrior enters culture, return to forest-chop-cancel
and continue in this vein?

Maybe it would be better to have the fast worker chop a forest first, to get our third settler (or some warriors) out ASAP?

Yes, I think that would work. I agree a few more warriors after the settler would be good. I should also note there is a bear to our north between us and Hammuragawa.

I think the chop in Delhi could go into another worker, but I'd have to test if that or a warrior (to grow back to pop 2) would be best after the whip.

p.s. those two archers mean a worker steal is out of the question.

Should we recall Lotus or Guru in that case? Or leave them both for defense?

Edit: And technically there are 3 (edit: of Toku's archers), since one is south of Delhi.

Do we only have one warrior in Bollywood, and it needs to escort the settler to the gems site? Seems our defences are getting a bit thin on the ground.

edit: xpost with Trystero - would like input from team on this issue

Yes, we only have the one warrior in Bollywood. Warriors are definitely a priority. Especially before we hook up the copper.

Yes. We can send Lotus (the warrior on the hill 2W of Osaka) back toward Bollywood. Guru (on the hill 1N1NW of Osaka), could keep an eye on Osaka and spawnbust the area north of Delhi until its border pops. We could also put the overflow from whipping the Monument in Delhi (26 hammers) into a warrior, and build it on the next turn.

If it makes you feel better
