LizNES6: Fortune Favors The Brutal

I think you only need one more post, if I remember correctly. Regardless, if you need any help with the rules, or any backstory info, you can PM me (after you post again) or AIM me, if you have one.

Mieux Connaître D'Une Province
(Better Know A Province)

Part 1 of 20

Laurentides
Capital: Saint-Jérôme
Representatives: Roland Dupond; Winoc Villeneuve; Évariste Bisset

Laurentides has long been known to have a "split personality" as far as provinces go. The southern end is bustling with activity due to its proximity to the St. Lawrence River, while the north is relatively quiet and peaceful.

Laurentides is seen by the Montréalais as the getaway destination for those looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, and the people of the province have embraced that. The cities and towns in the south boast hotels, spas, luscious parks, and even amusement parks, all catering to the "metropolitan refugees" looking for time off. In fact, tourism is the backbone of Laurentides' economy, overtaking manufacturing and shipping over the last twenty years. In the north one could also find tourist attractions, although you are much more likely to find farms, not hotels and amusement parks. A fair amount of produce hails from northern Laurentides, such as beans, potatoes, apples, pears, grapes, and cereals. Additionally, dairies are quite common in the region. Although Laurentides is home to a thriving tourist trade and many farms, they pale in comparison to the province's main feature, the Porte du Corridor Nord, which connects the industrial heart of Quebec with the resource rich territories in the far north. The railways and roads which serve as the arteries which bring raw resources from the north all meet in Saint-Jérôme, Laurentides' capital and largest city, where they are then relayed to the manufacturing centers on the St. Lawrence.

"He said what?" The voice of the president was deathly quiet as he conversed with his Industrial President. What the president really said, and what the IP understood him as saying, was: 'If you don't start lying and covering your backside heads are going to roll and never move again'.

"He said....he said that the newest factories were understaffed, both with people and ma-machines." The Industrial 'President' as various cabinet ministers were called, started to fidget and re-adjust his tie.

"Thats not all. Once I gave him your objectives for this years end production...well, he laughed to my face. And you know we can't just get rid of this guy, or assign him to some backwater." The IP's face started to pale as he waited for the inevitable.

"Cant? Why in the Californian Hell can't I?" Tim's face said it all. 'Im the boss. You call me boss. You boney the boss. You and boss will get along just fine if you do this. But you are not doing it. Why?'

"Because I said so..." The IP was obviously joking, but he had only held the office for a month or less. He didn't yet know Tim Haulsee.

A gunshot rang out in the office. Red went everywhere, and Ian was visibly startled from his nap and let loose a low growl.

"Well that settles it. You know my answer now of course?" The president asked, handling the sleek pistol made in Deseret that had recently arrived.

"Of-of course sir. I'll get right on it sir!" The IP was visibly shaken. He hurried out, no doubt hoping to get a reasonable reason for this reaction from somebody who had worked here longer. And Tim could tell he had no idea what answer he was supposed to relay to the manager of the factories and their various projects.

Tim looked at the fireplace. Ian was glaring at him, hair standing up all around his neck, teeth bared.

"What?" Ian just glared.

Tim looked at the fireplace that he had fired into. The brick was shattered, and a small part of the wall had caved in.

"Drat. Your right. I really shouldn't lose my temper unless its a Hudsonist." Ian just barked in response and went back to his nap, keeping one eye half open watching the pistol still in Tim's hands until he put it down in order to reach for the phone.

"Sarah? Yes. Yes, I need another fireplace up here at once. A week? Tell them I'll pay double if its in by this afternoon....."

Nice story Arya.

I came across a few flags for some NPC's, though if anyone else has any other ones they might want to use/think are better, go ahead and lay it on me. I figure I should get it all started.

Also, again as a reminder, orders are due this Friday. And the deadline will be enforced more strictly than before.

And to get some opinions, would people be interested if I brought back my 'Events of the Year' from some of my previous NES's as well?

To: The People of China
From: The Khan

Across the state of China a signal is broadcasted. Picked up and then repeated. Origin unknown. Many were told ahead of the broadcast and tuned in. Others found it by accident.

On radios, and blank screens of television monitors, a deep voice arose from the static.
"My brother and sisters in China. The great leaders of Asia gather together this year to plan the freeing of China from the yoke of Capitalism. Instead of a weak government ruled by puppets, we will be united again under the bonds of the party. We will reclaim what is ours and be victorious once again. We will stand against Japanese brutality, bougie injustice, and corrupt politicians who seek to keep the hard working Chinese from ever becoming prosperous. Together we shall triumph over these adversities and be great once again. All we must do now is wait and hide from those who seek to destroy us. For soon we will be strong and the enemy will be weak. At that time we will rise up against our masters and shed these chains of poverty!"

The signal fads and crackled back to static. Some believed it was the voice of the Khan himself. Others think it was the work of the Chinese Restoration Society, an underground socialist group of college students and young workers seeking a way to rejuvenate the crumbling Chinese state. All knew, however, that war was coming.

The Californian Union in all of its wisdom has decided to infringe upon the rights of nations. First, decades ago, they nudged Panama to share the dreaded ideology of Hudsonism. More recently, they have attempted to convert by force of arms, the Rio Grande Republic, Sonora, and the Empire of Mexico. The thought that these are sovereign nations with rights never crossed the minds of their leader. Rights were violated. Rights, of which that the people may choose their government by majority, not minority backed by foreign soldiers and foreign guns. The Rio Grande Republic has managed to escape such a fate that the Californian Union would choose to force upon them. The Empire of Mexico and Sonora were not so lucky.

Alaska, Texas, Deseret, Rio Grande, and Cascadia have come together to oppose the scourge of Hudsonism in an alliance, Free America. We do hereby issue this ultimatum to California and any allies that may wish to foolishly and wrongly support them:

ONE, that California gives up any Hudsonist ties to any nation, organization, rebellion, or other such group outside of their given territory.

TWO, that California immediately stop any funding and encouragement of revolutions in foreign nations, as well as any funding of Hudsonist or related ideologic groups outside of their own territory.

THREE, that California allows Free America in conjunction with international observers from across the globe to oversee new and fair elections in Mexico, Sonora, and Panama, all of which will become independent both of Hudsonism and of any Californian influence that California may have imposed upon them.

FOUR, that in the future and present California respects the sovereignty and rights that independent nations have.

FIVE, California shall back down from any current or future military action pertaining to the spread of Hudsonism outside its borders.

Signed,
Nations of Free America
Tim Haulsee, Federal Republic of Alaska

While we favor the effort of the so called 'Free Alliance' to eradicate Communism we are not particularly favorable towards Alaska, one of our neighbors, joining in on this alliance of aggression.

From: Rio Grande, Cascadia

We support the ultimatum, and hope cooler heads in Los Angeles appear and prevent this from escalating.

We will stand by California, regardless of their response.

To:Free America
From:Republic of Occitania
We wish the best of luck to you on your righteous crusade against the scourge of the world that is Communism.
Perhaps one day, Communism shall no longer be a threat to the stability of the world.

To:Central Italian Papalists, Taranto Rebels

We support your right to Self-determinism

Remember, my French brothers and sisters, the glory of France in the Old-times! When the Tricolore was worthy of respect from Madrid to London. When within all the lands of Europe, the nobles spoke not their native tongues to each other, but French. When a child could would stand tall merely for being French.

Only together shall we be able to take our rightful place among the great powers of the world, once more. Vote not for continued imprisonment the Germans, whatever it be part of the damned Reich, or as a 'free' state close to it. Rather, vote to join Occitania. Together, we can and will make France strong.
Sing la Marseillaise with pride for France is back.
Vive la France.

The Ultimatum has Texas' full support. It is our fervent hope that the government in Los Angeles realizes the error of their ways and agrees to the terms before war decimates North America.

Quebec hopes both the "Free America" alliance and those they oppose end this war before it starts. A war stretching from Panama to the Arctic Ocean will surely bring Pacific-Atlantic trade to a grinding halt, which affects more than just the warring parties.

Panama has been a Hudsonist government for decades, while Alaska illegally invaded their nation. We would not support a referendum in Panama under any circumstance.

Sonora is a similar position that Rio Grande is with Texas. The only way we might consider it is if the Rio Grande was united with Mexico and that we would retain control of Baja California, a part of California that has longed for return to our nation.

Mexico, we would be open to allowing a referendum, however Hudsonist, Socialist, and Communist parties must be allowed on the ballots, and that there will be no interference by any of "Free America" from the nations.

California will continue to ally herself with any nation it sees fit, and will give support to any regime she chooses, she will not have her foreign policy dictated to her.

We always have respected the sovereignty of legitimate democracies

CalIndustries will continue to be allowed to operate in Mexico and Sonora, regardless of the results. Hudsonist parties will be allowed to be on the ballot, and will be allowed to run for office

Although we do not wish for war, we do not fear it. We have the people. We have allies, we have far more soldiers, planes, tanks, guns, money, and ships, and technology to boot. We would win this war, and you would perish. But again, we do not wish for it. Let us make peace before another war breaks out, and avoid the suffering of the people.

Chernorussiya supports the proposition above. Issuing ultimatums is a foolish policy, if you wish for détente there must be negotiations and compromise. The resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis should be the obvious pointer here.

CC: Everyone Else

We find it amusing, for obvious reasons, that after the defeat of Franco-Germany and her lackeys in the Great Patriotic War that a cabal of American nations have risen up in a similar coalition to curb the "aggression" of a state that has sought only to protect its interests. Hudson is a shexay laydeh, and we may not always agree with her policies, but you, members of "Free America", will apparently only ever learn from experience.

We will be watching this situation closely.

To Free America and California and her Allies
From the Dixie Republic

We invite your heads of state to the beautiful beaches of Tampa for some drinks, fishing, and negotiations to prevent the continent from exploding into war.

As a neutral party, we can guarantee that both sides' interests will be represented at the table.

California would appreciate a neutral party in these negotiations, though to completely ensure their is no misunderstanding, Hudsonist parties WILL be represented in Mexican elections, and under no circumstances will we subject the nation of Panama to a referendum against a legitimate government
