SparkNES: A Tale of Mad Scientists and Power!

Update 1: 1951 CE – 104 ABM
Bolshevheim
The Polifaze family (or, more exactly, Mikael Polifaze) demonstrates the power of his Myconids for the first time. Although, so far, the only Myconid (a clank-like construct made of fungus) shown is a bodyguard to Mikael, but the head of the Polifaze family is now ready to use the Myconids as a great force to potentially replace or complement clanks, as the Myconids do not require metal nor fuel to work. Mass production for the Myconids and the Mycoscouts (small mobile fungi able to monitor areas and communicate with humans) is expected to begin soon. Legionowo sees the construction of a distillery to exploit forest mushrooms and create a brew that may be useful for Bolshevheim, investing great quantity of money and resources on it. An expedition to a swamp south-west of Warsaw yields a strange fungus that seems to be a natural revenant-creator, much like slaver wasps, but only for ants. A second expedition led by Wilhelm managed to gain the allegiance of Leszno, a miners' town west of Warsaw, using a food-or-death approach to doing so, Meanwhile, the mysterious deaths in Warsaw have been investigated by Karl. Several pieces of gold were spent trying to find red Sparks in the city, believing these might be behind the murders in an attempt to pin the guilt on Nalia. However, not only it turned out to be a green Spark who did these, but in fact several of those people had actually been killed by Nalia during her “experiments”. The green Spark has been arrested, but the people claim for Nalia to be punished for her attacks on them.
Spoiler :
Sparky Challenge: the Wisla is not enough for our ship! We need either smaller ships that can travel fast along the river, or to reach wider parts of the river! Also, we can try to go for the air route, and eschew communication by river. What will you do?

Resources: +3 Food, +4 Metal, +2 Fuel, +1 Gold from trade
Warsaw: +750 people from growth, -1 Stability
Legionowo: +250 people from growth, +1 Food

Project: Mushroom Winery (completed, produces Food and Gold)

Principality of Buda-Pest
Due to their being busy with strange projects regarding uplifted dogs and new machines, little is done in the terms of advancement, because of several confusing orders sent by the Hunyadi, still shut away in their castle. The orders are summarily ignored because they do not take into account the reality of things. For example, orders to triple the size of the army are sent to the bin when it turns out there is not enough metal to provide for even those who are part of the army right now. The Clanks and the steamship have to be shut-down in order to break even, and things may get worse if something is not done soon. However, the militias and the airship are more than enough to protect the surrounding lands from several wild constructs, and they even manage to reach nearby Bicske in order to sign a treaty by which they shall be under the authority of the Hunyadi.
Spoiler :
Sparky Challenge: the lack of metal is becoming very worrying. Although Bicske helps in maintaining our current level of use of metal, it will be impossible to expand the army unless something is done. What will you do?

Resources: +2 Food, +4 Stone, +5 Metal, +2 Fuel from trade, +2 Food, +5 Stone, +6 Metal, +4 Fuel from Bicske
Buda-Pest: +600 people from growth, -50 Militia, -5 Infantry Clanks (temporary), -1 River Steamship (temporary)

Dardanic Order
The threat of hunger drives the Dardanic Order to find new and better ways to feed all of their people, as they care about them (and, besides, if they died, who would they be ruling over?). Thus, they start to work. Dante von Welf leads a large army of Militias and Clanks upriver, in order to lay claim to new settlements. On the way upriver, they encounter a small army of horrible insect-like creatures led by a mad Spark who seems bent on destroying any settlement they find, deeming that only insects should rule the planet. An attack upon them, supported by the River Steamship, ends up with the loss of 100 Militias and 5 Infantry Clanks, but the Insect Army is totally wiped out, the only survivor being the mad Spark, who has been captured. This helps in convincing the Aldeianos (people from Aldeia) to join, as they felt threatened by the Spark's army and Dante's presence helped to erase that threat. Meanwhile, Aerina von Welf starts to develop a special steamship, able to exploit fish through the use of fish pheromones, a plan that might actually work despite (better said, because of) being very, very mad, and thus very Sparky. It remains uncompleted, but soon the new Steamfishers will be able to gain more food for the people.
Spoiler :
Sparky Challenge: the recently found Spark has revealed that he was expelled from a community of even worse Sparks situated somewhere to the north-east of where he was found, near the Iberian northern coast. This community might become dangerous for us, as news of our position may have already arrived there. What will you do?

Resources: +4 Food, +2 Wood, +1 Gold from trade, +3 Food, +4 Wood, +1 Stone from Aldeia
New Lisbon: +700 people from growth, +100 people from immigration, -300 Militias, -20 Infantry Clanks, +1 Metal

Project: Steamfisher (produces Food, needs 1 Metal and 1 Food, Maintenance 1 Fuel and 1 Food)

Free Floating City of Drulshal
Parsimonious Drulshal lives pacifically through the year, unable to do much save work and drunk on the nice Mediterranean sun. However, a story has broken out, that threatens the future of the Hibule family: several bounty hunters, angry at the fact that Rul had attacked them and killed their crews, banded together to put her down forever in spite of the standing alive bounty on Rul. After several months of work, the bounty hunters managed to corner her and attack her airship without little stopping them. Only the fast thinking of Rul's own crewmen saved her, managing to bring her to the sea and taking a nearby trader ship that was inbound for Drulshal. This was probably the only thing that perturbed the calm in Drulshal, a calm that some fear may be short due to Rul's injuries.
Spoiler :
Sparky Challenge: the injuries suffered by Rul means that she will probably be out of commission for several months, while she tries to heal and repair herself. The bounty hunters that tried to kill her must not be allowed to go unpunished, or else Wasul's image will be mocked. What will you do?

Resources: +2 Food, +5 Stone, +4 Metal, +2 Fuel, -1 Gold from trade
Drulshal: +400 people from growth, -1 Airship, -1 Stability
Garntolof: +200 people from growth, +1 Food, -1 Stability

Geneva Commonwealth
The mountains of the Alps certainly bring peace, but peace is not exactly the best idea when you are surrounded by potential enemies that might try to attack you. At least, that that is what the Commonwealth has discovered, when an air pirate attacked Geneva and sacked many of its stores, taking most fuel and metal for their own use. Fortunately, production from the Lausanne mines has managed to meet with the requirements to feed the forces, but it is a tight thing. Problems also come from the lack of food, as the pirate attacks destroyed a few farms and left you with just enough to survive the year, but not the next one. People have left Geneva in order to avoid dying of hunger the next year.
Spoiler :
Sparky Challenge: the inactivity has clearly left the Commonwealth on very dire straits. The best estimates put at four thousand the number of people that will die of hunger, and that's even if rationing is started. The problem of the pirates is also a worrying one, and many fear that they will come the next year to take more of the hard-worked-for resources. What will you do?

Resources: +2 Food, +1 Gold from trade, -10 Metal, -12 Fuel from pirate raids
Geneva: +700 people from growth, -100 people from pirate raids, -1,000 people from emigration, -1 Food, -1 Stability
Lausanne: +200 people from growth, +500 people from immigration, +1 Metal, -1 Stability

Neo Serena Repubblica
The skies above the Neo Serena Repubblica de Venezia become the scenario of a brutal aerial battle, as an air pirate attempts to attack Venice and sack it. The only Venetian airship did its best to fight the pirate with the help of a few civilian airships, but in the end the crew was forced to use the airship itself to take down the pirate. Fortunately, the crew survived and both airships could be recovered, but neither was in condition of flying, so both were scrapped and all parts were taken for their use in a newer airship. In a great change of policies, people were allowed to freely enter Venice, in spite of the danger of overcrowding, as the Doge stated that, as every person was equal in the republic, every person was welcomed. Several people were, however, directed to nearby San Dona, which was complaining of bandits. Grateful over the protection freely provided by the Repubblica, they chose to join the Repubblica and bring with them their knowledge of food production. The ceremony of acceptance of San Dona was crowned with the creation of the Venetian Ducat, which they expect will help economically, as well as the announcement of the Arms of the Republic, aimed at helping the people protect Venice further from potential raider attacks.
Spoiler :
Sparky Challenge: with food sources secured, the attention of the Venetians turns to the skies. The tragic loss of the nation's only military airship means that Venice is a sitting duck for any air pirates that may come here, and something must be done soon to prevent that. What will you do?

Resources. +2 Food, +5 Metal from trade, +15 Wood, +7 Metal from airships
Venice: +500 people from growth, +750 people from immigration, +3 Gold from Venetian Ducat
Eraclea: +300 people from growth, +100 people from immigration, -30 Militia, +1 Gold from Venetian Ducat
San Dona: +1,600 people, +14 Food, +12 Wood, +3 Stone, +4 Metal, +5 Fuel, +1 Gold, +7 Stability, +300 people from immigration, +20 Militia, +1 Gold from Venetian Ducat
Project: Arms of the Republic (needs 15 Wood and 15 Stone, increases land defense of Venice)

Grand Republic of Nowograde
In the cold steppe of Nowograde, the ground trembles as many people abandon the towns. However, not everyone is actual people: most of them are the Nowograden Army, sending expeditions to nearby towns. The news of the lack of foodstuffs are becoming worrying, for, while the Republic has been able to provide food for everyone, the quantity of food that remains within the warehouses is rapidly dwindling, and there will surely not be enough food for the next year. Already, people have been leaving Nowograde, hoping that they will be able to survive on their own without having to go to the Swjatoslawic to ask them for food, uncaring about the declaration of equality between Sparks and non Sparks. While this happens, the expeditions sent by the army to the northwest has encountered some small settlements on the way, which have welcomed them. They did not have great production in terms of foodstuff, which was the main reason behind the expeditions, but the representatives stated that, if they joined the Grand Republic, they would soon be producing more than enough food for twice or thrice their own population, and perhaps even more. The towns of Shimsk and Marista opened their doors to the Nowograden Army, and soon the Republic's flag flew over the towns' halls, being followed by the arrival of several experts in agriculture, amongst them Ksenija Swjatoslawic, who has begun a plan to produce special, eatable bamboo that can be produced the entire year. In unfortunate news, one of the expeditions was assaulted by revenants during a night stop, killing five soldiers and destroying one Clank before the rest were repelled by the rest of the expedition's gun fire.
Spoiler :
Sparky Challenge: as the addition of Shimsk and Marista to the Grand Republic has decreased the urgency in the food requirements, the advisors point out at another potential problem: the existence of revenants so near Marista. This is specially worrying, as it has been many years since a revenant was last seen near the Land of the Rus. The soldiers were attacked from the west, and some of them suspect that a revenant colony may be staying there. What will you do?

Resources: +3 Food, +2 Wood, +2 Stone from trade, +5 Food, +3 Wood, +2 Gold from towns
Nowograde: +600 people from growth, -500 people from emigration, - 5 Militia, -1 Infantry Clank, -1 Stability

Projects: Bamboo Incubator (requires 20 Wood, 15 Stone, 10 Metal, Maintenance 2 Fuel, produces Food)

Pirate Kingdom of Sardinia
An attempt by King Alzaro to expand the army was soon stopped by the fact that there was not enough metal to do so, and not only were the foundries unable to build the clanks, and the workshops to build Elmiro's second airship, but Alzaro had to lay off fifty militias so that the others could be well armed for their training and potential attacks, a decision that has not been welcomed by the people of Togliacci. Alzaro soon took to the seas in order to alleviate the hunger for metal the city suffers, and many ships fell before his might and that of Togliacci's troops, although the unfortunate loss of two Clanks to the sea in the fights. Most of those ships were sent to Togliacci, where they were dismantled for the storage of metal. Meanwhile, Elmiro, angry at the loss of the chance to gain another airship (and, some say, the chance to meet with Rul Hibule from Drulshal), threw himself into the fight. Two towns were complete destroyed in his rage before he calmed enough to remember that he was supposed to be convincing them to join the Kingdom. The town of Carbonia soon surrendered to avoid being hit by the same brutal attacks, and Elmiro spent the rest of the year helping to start running the mines, mostly as punishment for his actions directly against standing orders.
Spoiler :
Sparky Challenge: Elmiro's anger at the lack of the promised second airship, as well as the attacks on Rul Hibule, is only growing, and it is a matter of time before he does something drastic. Perhaps that anger may be directed at your enemies, or into a project. What will you do?

Resources: +6 Food, +5 Wood, +3 Stone, +3 Metal, +3 Fuel from Nuraminis, +10 Metal from raids
Togliacci: -50 Militia, +50 people from layoff, +660 people from growth, -1 Stability, -1 Airship

Skaneland
The Skanish people watch as many troops leave Skane towards other places, and do not know what they are planning to do. Without their knowledge, both Erik and Frida af Vornholm have abandoned Skane in order to take over several cities for the good of Skaneland, to ensure a flux of resources between the towns for the betterment of all. The great expedition led by Erik, formed by 225 soldiers, suffered an attack that was easily repelled by the troops and the Steamship that accompanied them, at no losses beyond a few bullets. The expedition reached the fabled city of Ystad, ruled by a small Spark called Henning who can solve any criminal problem he finds. Upon being offered a position in the government as the leader of the police forces, Henning jumped (not the least convinced by the many soldiers that surrounded the city). The smaller expedition led by Frida, was, however, fraught with problems, as they were met on the road by a force of several tens of well armed troops that fired on them, easily killing nearly two thirds of the troops before the others managed to make them run away. Frida was hurt, but not gravely, and soon ordered the small army to retire to nearby Vornholm. Back in Skane, Svend ordered the construction of a Great Granary to store food for harsh times and a Road Network to connect Skane to Vornholm and Ystad, two policies that were welcomed by the people. There are also rumors about contact being made with a powerful group of Sparks in the south, but so far nothing has been confirmed.

Spoiler :
Sparky Challenge: the raider attacks on Vornholm have continued, and after their attack on Frida's guard they have become bolder, launching more brutal attacks against Vornholm and raiding farms there. What will you do?

Resources: +1 Food, +2 Metal, +2 Fuel from trade, +2 Food, +5 Metal, +4 Fuel from Ystad
Skane: -300 Militia from expeditions, +650 people from growth, -5 Infantry Clanks, -1 River Steamship
Vornholm: -3 Food, -100 people from raiders, +150 people from growth, -1 Stability, +30 Militia
Ystad: +1,600 people, +15 Food, +10 Wood, +4 Stone, +2 Metal, +3 Fuel, +1 Gold, +7 Stability, +225 Militia, +1 River Steamship
Projects: Road Network (Needs 20 Stone, connects cities, produces Gold), Great Granary (Needs 25 Wood, stores food, reduces Skane's Food consumption by 5%).

Transylvania
The rule of the Igors keeps bringing change to Transylvania. The Spark girl that appeared in Bistrita was introduced to the Igor family, and soon she fell right in the group, calling herself Igorina but declining, for the moment, the offer by Igor to teach her surgery, as she is far more interested in her experiments and does not wish to lose her time in recovering from the surgery. Although let down by this, Igor nonetheless enjoys her presence, as she is a great source of ideas, especially that mining implement that she created and that can help increase production of metal and fuel in Bistrita by at least a 10%. Meanwhile, Igor spent a part of the year traveling with his undead bats and some men trying to buy food for Transylvania at good prices, which were met in several towns that needed metal and stone. One town in between Bistrita and Mures, seeing itself surrounded, chose to fall to the mercy of Igor, and soon it became a bustling farm town, that would be able to feed Mures and Bistrita. Nonetheless, Mures also saw an increase in production, as people were paid to change jobs and become farmers: this is expected to help reduce Mures' dependence on other towns in regards to foodstuffs.
Spoiler :
Sparky Challenge: with expansion of your lands in mind, the Igors must look at another problem: rumors have arrived to Mures of a powerful Spark that has declared that the Igors are an abomination, and that he will destroy them. What will you do?

Resources: +12 Food, -4 Metal, -4 Stone from trade, +4 Food, +3 Wood, +2 Fuel from Teaca.
Mures: +650 people from growth, +4 Food
Bistrita: +100 people from growth, +1 Metal, +1 Fuel
Teaca: +2,000 people, +14 Food, +10 Wood, +4 Stone, +3 Metal, +5 Fuel, +1 Gold, +7 Stability

Zwerg Metalworks Inc.
As traders through Hamburg hear rumors of people from the north coming in peace, the Board of Directors of the corporation works rapidly to ensure the outside threats are located and destroyed. Although the airship locates no red Sparks or Clanks (as per standing orders) they do find several rose-skinned Sparks and dark yellow Clanks, deciding that their positions would have to be told about. Max Zwerg chooses to ride to the front with the Clanks, several militias and the airship, easily destroying the few solitary Clanks that are around the city, and forcing two minor Sparks with their Clanks to join Zwerg Metalworks Incorporated. Three other Sparks are destroyed when they reject the offer, with minimal losses for the attackers. The corporation also takes its time and money in sending traveling salesmen to towns such as Freiburg, Ahrensburg or Seevetal, earning some profit in terms of needed foodstuffs.
Spoiler :
Sparky Challenge: desperation hits your people as it becomes known that the food sources are not enough to feed everyone in Hamburg. By your best calculations, next year more than three thousand people could die of hunger, even if there is rationing. What will you do?

Resources: +6 Food, +3 Wood, +1 Stone, +2 Gold from trade
Hamburg: +500 people from growth, +1 Stone, +1 Gold, -50 Militia, -1 Infantry Clank
Stade: +200 people from growth, +1 Food, +2 Infantry Clanks

Awesome, thanks for the update.

Clearly my abstract story-based solution didn't work for the raiders, though I see you gave me another, perhaps better answer.

Good update.

Yeah, that fever sucked. Oh well, I'll have to roll with it.

EDIT: I have 8+28=36 Food this year, to feed 35.5 Population. I'm pretty sure I have enough?

EDITEDIT: D'oh, you have not updated stats yet. No planning for me... yet.

EDITEDITEDIT: The Sparky Challenge for Transylvania seems familiar. You should check it out.

Great update, Milarqui! So fast...

You could always put the stats in a shared Google spreadsheet, they're easy to link and built for multiple users.

Looking at the update, I can only think of one thing in my mind.

I need more clanks. Preferably one with a flamethrower.

A Memorable Speech

Ladies! Gentlemen! Minions! Cats! Hear me speak loud and clear!

We are attacked by Pirates. Oh no. Whatever are we going to do?

Well let me tell you what I'm going to do! I'm going to put some pants over my underwear and then shoot those buggers down!

That's right, they're buggers! Just like your dad at the pub last week. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone else.

They feel that since they are outlaws, they can be outside of the law. Well I say that in laws are worse! We got GUNS. And Gold, I guess. But bribing makes you an outlaw! We're going to shoot them down, tie them up, and roast them on an open flame!

Sign up at the shop and we're outfit you with a nice gun! And a pair of pants! We got a bounty out for Pirates and idiot and drunkards. So go on ahead, bag a few buggers, and Borgia, bring me my pants! And uh, my underwear too!

If you will excuse me, I will outfit Master Giovanni with some leg garments, and send the message to the gun store. So um, turn around and go keep an eye out for "those buggers". Go Geneva! Yeah.

"Nalia! Where are you, hellspawn? You have no idea the trouble you've caused." Karl stomped down the dark stone corridor, pounding the wall for dramatic effect. He wasn't nearly as mad as he let on, but he felt a fight coming, and he needed to get himself worked up.

"You mad, bro?" Nalia sauntered out from behind a column. "I heard you sent your Proles out to solve the 'mystery of the missing organ donors'. I don't know why you didn't just ask me first, my lab is the Polyfaze's worst kept secret.

Karl swung at her with a wild roundhouse. "I didn't think you'd take so many." She easily dodged and caught him with a kick to the gut. "Ooof. I mean," firing a series of quick jabs to her face, "it's getting worse."

Nalia winced under the flurry of blows. She caught his fist and twisted him into a hammerlock. "You care too much for the peasants, Karl." She increased the pressure, nearly twisting his shoulder out of joint. "They don't give a damn about your sympathy, they just want a circus. And here I am giving them the three rings."

"But, so many ...", he kicked out at her knee, breaking her grapple and backing away, "what do you... What do you do with them all?"

Nalia grinned and stopped her advance. "Aww, Karl, how sweet. It's been years since you were interested in my research. You really want to know?"

"Well, yeah. Er, I think so."

"Wonderful! He's just behind that door. He so loves making new friends."

Karl approached the door warily. "He? This one better not attack me." He opened the door a crack.

Spoiler :

"So ... so many arms..."

"You like him? I call him Legion.” Nalia grinned, “In a way, he was father’s idea. He said if I continue my experiments, I’d need a hundred swordsmen to protect me. But there’s so many places that many men don’t fit. So I thought, why not just make one swordsman with a hundred arms?”

“So many … arms... but where are the rest of … them. The leftovers?”

“Oh you know, a bit here, a bit there. You could say I’m saving up for a rainy day.”

“The villagers. They’ll come for your head, you know.” The shock was wearing off, and Karl started to remember why he had come in the first place. “You need to stop, or at least find somewhere else to get your volunteers from.”

“Ha, you and your rabble. They want my head? Let them come. By the time Legion is finished with them, I should have enough parts to make another!”

1: Great stories so far!

2: Stats have been updated, so you can begin planning!

3: I want the orders for Update 2 before next Monday August 27th at 9 PM Spanish hour.

4: If you want to have a special unit, you MUST send me the unit stats with the orders. The unit can't be accessed until the turn after I have those unit stats.

5: LDiCesare or hbar, do you mind if I use your recent orders as to how I would like the orders to be sent?

What do the letters mean in the stats (F W S M C G)? I assume they are resources, but which?

Um... why wasn't I able to build the extra clanks or the airship? I thought I had the resources for it.

So, let me see if I understand teh stats correctly. I start the next turn with 50 food. Of this, I pay 37.6 in maintenance. This leaves 12.4 food available for building new units.

Am I correct?

5: LDiCesare or hbar, do you mind if I use your recent orders as to how I would like the orders to be sent?
No problem for me. Couldn't really answer earlier because of work and thunderstorms. Orders incoming.
Do you round up or down for food consumption? If 'nearest' then what of 0.5?

I don't understand the stats.
Bistrita stats are different from first update, but both lines are identical. I suppose the change may come from the mining implement, but then the first line should be different?
An airship costs 2 G, 3 M, 10 C to upkeep in the second post but its fuel cost got lowered to 5 in the spreadsheet. That is confusing. I think costs should be removed from second post or updated.
While I'm at it, the stats have all my units stationed in Mures when I stated 200 of the militia were in Bistrita.

1. I fixed the Bistrita problem. It now has a +1 in Metal and Fuel.
2. The upkeep in the front post has been changed.
3. Changed those 200. My mistake.
4. Got your orders. Your project is probably the most Sparky thing I've seen so far.

I have put two examples of how to send orders in the first post.

Attention, everyone! At this point in time, in the moment I start updating, I might send you a message asking you for permission to expend resources on something I will NOT be telling you what is it about save for a vague description. This is to exemplify a Spark's tendency to make up things without giving a care for the world (and also a bit like a dorf's strange mood in Dwarf Fortress). Depending on your answer, the results will be good or not.
