Caveman 2 Cosmos (ideas/discussions thread)

I would be hugely in favor of a slimmed down minimalist version of the mod, something that would avoid MAFs at all costs.

What is the biggest fat that could be trimmed? Graphics? I can live with crappy graphics if it means the game doesn't crash. I'm on the lowest settings already anyway.

Have you tried Rise of Mankind - A New Dawn? C2C is based off of ROM AND. There is basically no-one working on it at the moment though, any little bugs or whatever you'd have to live with ;) It is good though for sure. Its like a refined and slimmed version of c2c without all the bells and whistles. I don't think its balanced all that well, especially things such as early game costs $$, which are way overboard imo, and late game inflation is fuct. Although I think this got fixed recently.

In terms of making c2c faster, do you run 64bit windows with 8gb of ram? If not - get this!

Not sure if its necessary, but a program called CFF Explorer, install that, then you can right click on the beyond the sword.exe > open with CFF Explorer, click on file header on the left, then click where it says "click here", this will open a menu with little boxes>> make sure App can handle >2GB address has a little tick :)
As I said, im not sure if this is even necessary- the mod may do this for you idk.

Also in mydocument>mygames>beyond the sword>CivilizationIV.ini open this up and you might want to turn off ALT-Tab and lower some graphics settings in there. Probably won't help all that much though..

Oh and there is a program called Prio. This allows you to save a programs priority in the task manager. Like when you control-alt-delete > start task manager > processes > right click civ4beyondthesword and set priority and have it saved for good.

Another good program is GameBooster, I just got the cracked version off piratebay, but I think you can use the free version not sure, anyway, this program clears your ram cache, closes all unnecessary programs/utilities when you launch a game. Its pretty cool, only thing is its not good for MP Games like starcraft 2 and stuff, mainly only SP games.

re: comp stats, I have win7 ult 32bit with 4gb ddr3 and 1gb gddr, the game crashes pretty regularly around 1.6gb of memory in use. early game is not affected at all, only medieval era onward, when more of the map is revealed, and more units and automation is occuring. I cannot just throw money at the problem by upgrading my pc, so another solution would be nice

no I have not tried any other mods, not interested tbh, I would simply like this one to work for me

haven't seen any of those programs before, what exactly do cff explorer and gamebooster do?

Oh another thing, I used to have rampant MAF till I realised these needed to be 0's in the CivilizationIV.ini for these settings

; Disable caching of file system (may slow initialization)
DisableFileCaching = 0

; Disable caching of xml and file system (may slow initialization)
DisableCaching = 0

This is that other setting I was talking about >
; Allows some memory savings *** ALT-TAB WILL NO LONGER FUNCTION ***
MemSaver = 0

1 will turn it on.

We *do* have a couple options for this. I believe you've already done the 3GB switch (if you haven't, please do it), that is what cff explorer was for. Also, do the crashes say something about bad allocation in an ingame popup, or are they just abruptly dropping you back to the desktop. If it is the latter, it isn't a MAF, and may be fixable with savegames and minidump examples.

yep did the 3gb thing a few weeks back. and yes, they are mostly MAF's.

Could you please post a screenshot of the Graphics settings in the Options menu? (NOT in the BUG menu, in the vanilla options)

render quality is on medium because on low some of the graphics become solid pink "no texture" otherwise everything is low low low

You're doing it the wrong way, it should be render quality low and graphics level medium to avoid errors IIRC. Also, try running on a slightly lower resolution and changing this define
Code:
	<Define>
		<!-- Use the following to determine what building art
			is displayed on cities. It is a bitmask of flags which may be
			added together:
			1 = Wonders
			2 = city defences
			128 = other
			We default to Wonders and city defenses (1+2 = 3) -->
		<DefineName>SHOW_BUILDINGS_LEVEL</DefineName>
		<iDefineIntVal>3</iDefineIntVal>
	</Define>
to 0 and this define
Code:
  <Define>
    <!-- Set to non-0 value to enable dynamic activation of unit graphics entities (reduced memory usage and growth) -->
    <DefineName>ENABLE_DYNAMIC_UNIT_ENTITIES</DefineName>
    <iDefineIntVal>0</iDefineIntVal>
  </Define>
to 1 and see what happens. If you get crashes with the DYNAMIC_UNIT_ENTITIES, report them to Koshling, as he hasn't done a whole lot of work recently on that one.

Also if your using an ATI graphics card (not sure about nvidia) in catalyst control centre you might want to lower your gpu settings. Choose use application settings - no overriding. Anti-aliasing mode to multi-sample AA, and then you might want to overclock slightly under the performance tab- AMD overdrive. Make sure you got latest drivers ofc.

Best thing to do if you don't wanna use game booster or whatever to clear/clean ur ram, is restart your computer before playing. Perhaps even power off, then on again.

There is a thing you can do with win7 to clear ram cache
right click on desktop & Go to New= click on shortcut
In location paste this code %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
Click on next & choose name for shortcut & click on finish

Might just be better to restart comp tho.

If I was you, i'd just go order some more RAM and win7 64bit :D

I'm sorry to hear you're having these problems Shen... all I can suggest that hasn't been suggested yet(I think) is perhaps tweaking graphics settings on your card. I'm not sure what could be causing your problems. The card is good, and the rest is quite good too, should be enough. But you're running a capture program along with it and perhaps that's a big reason for the mafs as that capture program may be 'capturing' a bit too much of your graphics card processing power. You might wish to check on how your computer is graphically optimized too, setting additional memory for use there. But I'm no master here so I've been hoping someone else would be able to offer THE solution and sadly, it looks like we're all a bit stumped outside of suggesting to... well... throw $ at the problem.

could you make botanical gardens a national wonder.even from 19 century many countries had them .

I thought we had them. I remember discussing them with Afforess back in RoM:AND days. Them and arboreta. In the US they have many arboreta and few botanical gardens, here in Australia it is the other way round.

If anyone gets this while modding there is a hotfix from Microsoft for it, i got it on Koshling's last SVN update.

("Invalid Access Memory Location (998)" error message when a 32-bit application calls the LsaLogonUser function on a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003)

Two thoughts:

1. Shouldn't Papyrus allow us to build school of scribes?

2. Totalitarianism should give a one time stability bonus rather than a penalty... just look at regimes in history.
