Report for Turnset 4: Turn 73 - Turn 81

Our plans to build The Oracle have been a success! The RNG Gods have indeed favoured us and somehow Ramsess chose to build ToA rather than The Oracle. We did however have the misfortune of losing one of our warriors to a barb at low dying odds. But TO offsets that by far!

Ramsess:

civ4screenshot0004t.jpg

Anyway, the excitement of having built the oracle has worn off now! It's nearly 3.30 so time for me to sleep! Night!! :)

The roster has been updated. Benginal you are UP!

  • ChrisShaffer - (t0-31)
  • neilmeister - (t32-57)
  • Trystero - (t58-72)
  • Revent - (t73-81) - just played
  • Benginal - UP!
  • SteelHorse - on deck
  • vra379971 - in the hole
  • Deckhand
  • Brian Shanahan

OK, so where do we go from here? Our coastal exploration has been great, but we need to find the closest Brennus city, and find Ramesses. We need to get Woody2 or a chariot out exploring.

Should our tech path be Writing > Alphabet? I think so. (Edit: Writing > Alphabet > Currency (steal IW), actually)

We met Ramesses 5 turns ago, but he still has no EP against us. Has he met more AIs than just Brennus?

:goodjob: Revent - good work and congrats on Oracle.
A couple of questions.
Do you recall what units were in the west coast barb city?
Did you open borders with Ramses?

OK, green from me.

Seriously, awesome work on both the macro and micro!! Really impressed.

Oh yeah, Ramesses. WOOT

Does anyone know what is guarding the barb city?

Random thoughts, some mutually exclusive:

- we want that barb city (Hello Captain Obvious :wavey:)
- Paris could build ~5 Chariots, depending on what is defending the barb city
- we want at least one city on an island, as soon as possible.
- is the land our 2nd WB discovered part of the continent, or is it offshore.
- Production could build a galley soon (see above)
- GP Farm could build workers/settlers
- Brennus & Ramesses are each others worst enemies, so if we open borders with one, the other will probably demand we stop trading. This could be tricky.
- Without open borders or offshore cities, the GLH potential is not realised.
- Brennus has no coastal cities that we know of = no trade routes
- Cities 4 & 5 need some worker loving, desperately. Cottages & mines respectively.
- Paris should get 1 riverside grass cottage, asap.
- Commerce should take possession of the FP being cottaged at the moment from Production.
- Research Writing-CoL-CS? Or Writing-Alpha ? (can we skip Alpha? we have awesome trade techs)
- whip Libs in GP Farm & Paris when we can

Stupid insomnia. :coffee:

Is the copper island south of Brennus too far away? We could also use copper.

- Without open borders or offshore cities, the GLH potential is not realised.

OB would also allow religion spread from Brennus.

- Research Writing-CoL-CS? Or Writing-Alpha ? (can we skip Alpha? we have awesome trade techs)

I can't see skipping Alphabet, since we need to steal IW from Brennus (or maybe Ramesses???) ASAP to make Clams city live up to its full potential. (BTW - we also need to rename Lyon :p)

zsrhD.jpg

Only 3 archers in the city and none have any promotions. 5 chariots should do the job if we want to be safe.

I didn't open borders with Rams because I didn't think it would be suitable yet. We don't even know where he is and he's going in and out of being Brennu's worst enemy.

It LOOKS to be offshore but this continent seems to be full of surprises

- GP Farm could build workers/settlers
Agreed :) However, I think we should let it grow to size 4 first

- Brennus & Ramesses are each others worst enemies, so if we open borders with one, the other will probably demand we stop trading. This could be tricky.
They go in and out. I think it would be right to take out one of them (Brennus) sooner rather than later because Ramsess is a good trading buddy and wonder spammer (hoping he builds MoM? )

- Paris should get 1 riverside grass cottage, asap.
And one more riverside for future IW city. We will want one production coastal city as well for intercontinental war.

- Commerce should take possession of the FP being cottaged at the moment from Production.
We should note that into the micro for Benginal :)

- Research Writing-CoL-CS? Or Writing-Alpha ? (can we skip Alpha? we have awesome trade techs)

Alpha for stealing IW. We want to settle south so getting IW ASAP is a priority. AI normally prioritise it anyway :)
Remember to do binary research as well :) Also forge before library?

Not sure what you mean about the bus pass, but congratulations. I added you to the spreadsheet. I've watched hurling once live at a festival, but that's it. I don't really understand it :)

Get a free bus pass here in Ireland when you turn 66, let's you travel anywhere by public transport gratis.

Sorry for the patchy service so far. I'm busy at work, and training hard for a county final in Gaelic Football. Hopefully I'll have time to spare for this over the weekend.

More random thoughts.

We have a lot of land! We are 1st in food and land and 2nd in gnp. :)

Need more workers. Commerce will be working two unimproved tiles next turn. Need cottages quickly. Clams will be working 2 unimproved in 5 turns. Sans any whipping.

Does switching to a forge Paris make sense for :hammers:?

Ramses has writing. Is he headed to Alpha? Should we be looking for trade bait.

Western Barb city looks good, but we should have workers ready. could be another potential cottage site. Is it urgent to take immediately? Without improvements does it add to the economy?

Medium term - need to get someone to Friendly for trading. If we think Brennus will
be our first target, may want to consider getting on Ramses good side.

We've achieved our first set of goals - GLH and TO. What are the next goals?
More cities or improve tech rate - which takes precedence (libs, scientists and cottages or settlers, workers, and whipping)?

Wonders - Is Colossus in our future? In the capital or production city? Is Glib critical?

Should we take the high-road on the tech tree? Or race to Astro for trade routes?

Well, this is Emperor :) We can outpace the AI in expansion fortunately without TOO much hassle.

One worker is building a cottage for commerce already. The other three are free to do as they wish so we can send them over to cottage as well. Clams should be whipping the granary as soon as possible.

We need Alphabet as soon as possible. If Ramsess gets it, we can stop our research and get Aesthetics and trade for whatever is left of Alpha (might need some more beakers for this) and Polytheism (Setting us on route for TGL).
However, I have a strong reason to believe that Ramsy has marble because of that early ToA date.

Switching Paris to forge: I agree.

I don't see any urgency of taking that barb city. I vote we let it develop somewhat (build some more workers for us to steal as well hehe) but have chariots on standby to rush capture if we see Brennus getting too greedy.

Brennus can get to friendly/pleased with Org Religion (+3) and same religion (+6), fair trade (+4). Ramesses can get to friendly/pleased with Org Religion (+4) and same religion (+6), fair trade (+4).

If Ramesses doesn't become a scum and discover his own religion, we can have a budhist love fest here. That would result in a continental increased tech rate. We focus a bit more on espionage to see what they are researching and research something else. In the end, when we near Astronomy, we can backstab both of them and take out the continent for ourselves. (We could have one worker build a road to Brennus, OB with him and we SHOULD get Buddhism). The AI start planning war at around this point of the game normally so this should be a priority. An early war will really set us back even if we prepare for it, those hammers invested in archers could've gone into infrastructure.

GLib is VERY important in my opinion. We can put colossus on the backburner as I am sure that no one will have MC yet. (Mansa likes to go for it, but he's most likely not in the game).

Next set of goals should be a coastal REX. We need to make the most of GLH. Focus on production first followed by commerce. As Cre and Ind, we should have libraries and forges in almost EVERY city so that should be a key goal. Key techs to aim for are Aesthetics (Literature), Alphabet, IW (Steal).

I think we want to kill our continent before Lib and Astro so that by the time we get it, we won't get many diplomatic troubles ie you traded with our worst enemy. For an early space victory, we want global high tech rate UNTIL it is our point to win  It can make a difference of 100 years or so if the AI is horrendously backwards.

What is our Lib target? We should start planning that one now. How early can we get Education? TLG will be crucial for this because there is no other way we will be bulbing Taoism, double Edu and Lib AND get something good out of it without enough GS points. I think we should TRY to aim for Lib Biology.

We have one shrine we can steal already, so let's hope we can get two more on this continent and sort that goal out off the bat.

Also, I think a point to add is that I've noticed there's not much flow at the moment in our turnsets. Obviously, it can't be helped due to the nature of SG's but we can try to minimise the lack of flow. For example, at least early on in the game worker movements shouldn't be done JUST to maximise the turnset currently being played; they should be optimising the whole gameplay. Hard to visualise what I am trying to say, even for me so I'll give an example.

City X has two floodplains: one that is one north of the city and one that is three south. City Y is 6 tiles south of city X. We have one worker and that worker has just been built in city X. City X is at size 4 and has 5 improved tiles. The end of the turnset is now approaching. What some may do is move 1N and start cottaging, but although it is more optimal in this individual turnset, it doesn't flow well with the worker actions because next, the worker wants to go to city Y and it will waste worker turns by extra movement (going north and then south again) which is important in the early game.

A solution to this is that at the end of the players turnset, I suggest that this player not play any more, but manage the worker movement via spreadsheet for the next player to optimise flow.

1) The official got it! Buffy seems to be working, the save seems to be loading correctly, and it looks like everything is good.

2) I'm going to be busy this week, as promised, but I don't think you guys should have to notice. So unless something unexpected happens our game should continue on schedule.

3) Neil (or anyone) is there an accurate test game out there I can start working with?
