Beneath the Jade Moon (pre-NES)

A quick summary of the #neverending conversation which will be sketched out over the week among my other duties: I would likely be working on this during school.

House Name: Essil-Hauros
Sigil / Words: Humility, Tenacity, Necessity
Lord: [the name of your lord with his age and marital status]
Family: [if you really want a son or daughter or whatever, say so here, along with age and marital status (if applicable) -- but this section will be moderated for the final profile]
Ancestors: [notable, important ancestors (do not list your entire bloodline, please), with perhaps a brief descriptive title for each one; for example, "Billy the Builder, who was the architect of the grand Monastery of Delas-kul"] <- Feel free to play off of other house's ancestors, as well, if you can logically connect them.]
Essil the Esurk Slayer
-Major Esurk Ally Here
-Esurk-Essil marriage alliance couple here
Holdings: [a listing and brief description of all of your house's holdings]
Essil's Landmount: An ancient keep which mismatched expansions, old seat of House Essil's power.
Haurodell: A growing town along the Saffron, capital of Essil-Hauros.
Retainers: [a few lesser house names, and a brief set of words to describe each retainer's role and how they support you and/or have supported you in the past]
Sources of Income: [how your house survives and makes money]
History: [the abridged history of your house]
*You refers to Bombshoo*
your house helps take out the Serepen, and Essil's house, a branch of that family a bit further out, flees
to their conquered Esurk allies/vassals, and decided to cement their unstable powerbase by marrying into the most respected Esurk clan's leadership
hoping to get back against the Ursurper within a few years
BUT in that time the Ursurper basically won his final victory against all but the hold outs
so when his troops came calling, the family realized that they are all alone, for realz
they don't have Serepen's full tenacity, so they capitulate
and now have to deal with the Esurk frontier much closer than before- stuff they once relied on subjugated, allied, or vassalized tribes to do they have to handle themselves
Location: Region 11, focusing on the southern part along the Saffron river, the interior hills, and a coastal strip of forts/small ports.

Again, I would be working on this in greater detail, with this just to claim a region, get a bit more support, and such like.

Hauros is the name of the Esurkish clan, ally of Essil, which they married into to try to consolidate an Esurkish army in support of Surosiri loyalists and the overthrown Emperor.

House Essil, without Hauros, is basically a smattering of forts along Essil's Serpents with a minor city at Essil's Landmount (to be renamed), a base closer to Serepen's (their liege lord's) holdings up north, and a smattering of Esurkish allies/vassals/subjects which they keep undercontrol with various expeditions. With their move their lost their northern "Homeland" territory and some of their outposts, but have gained much more control over the interior.

EDIT: Would also make sense if the Essils used to be the Herald of Serepen.

Looks good so far. I would change the name of Hauros to be a bit more consistent with the (symbol-heavy, difficult to type) Esurkish nomenclature that has been developed by Kraz/Owen.

Anyone wanting to fill 3,6, and 7 should consider melding some events with me. I feel we need to tie the histories together more.

Anyone wanting to fill 3,6, and 7 should consider melding some events with me. I feel we need to tie the histories together more.

This would be best, purely because collaborative world-building is such a fun thing to do, and produces interesting results. Still, I'll take some liberties and tie any loose ends before the launch of the NES.

Also to the people who may potentially take 6 or 7: Don't forget I'm also present on the islands at the entrance to the Inner Sea. Also, what Devercia said.

Devercia: Pretty much the same. We should discuss trying to interconnect our histories a bit more, since I'm pretty much directly north of you.

Who are the Lords of the Vein?

House Name: House Derfennisy

Sigil / Words: A blue field with a golden sheaf on it. (“Never broken”)

Lord: Lord Fennigar XXI (39/wed)

Family: Lady Marasi (wife/34/wed), Fennigar (son/18/unwed), Marasi (daughter/16/unwed), Tymbar (twin son/14/unwed), Tymbasi (twin daughter/14/unwed), Stedna (daughter/12/unwed), Dethstar (son/10/unwed), Sufia (daughter/8/unwed)

Ancestors:

Castle Sib- This ancient riverside castle guards the lands downriver of Tenday and the Eastroad, seat of House Sibagan.
Castle Conn- This ancient hilltop castle guards the lands upriver of Tenday, the River Conn, and the foothills of the Painted Peaks, fief of House Tenderay.
Estorhead- Storied medium-sized city along both sides of the Esot headwaters, managing export of goods down the Esot, as well as minor Jade mines, seat of House Estfennisy.
Castle Tass- Hilltop castle protecting the northern Esot River basin and the Westroad, seat of House Tassalynn.
Castle Bless- Moated flatland castle, supervises export of goods downriver into the Emperor’s lands, fief of House Estfennisy.

House Banasi- adopted branch of the Derfennisy, stoic.
House Grunholm- client branch of the Derfennisy, uncultured.

Sources of Income: Agricultural product is the major source of income for House Derfennisy. Wheat is grown in the plains and riverlands closest to the Sibor, Esot, and Blessed Rivers, while Barley and Oats are grown further upstream in the riverbasins, on the plateau, or in the hills and mountains, where the ground is too dry or the weather too cool; these further support secondary livestock breeding, ale and beer brewing. Caravan trade between and river trade along the same rivers and their basins provides the other major component of income. Copper mining in the Painted Peaks, as well as minor Jadeite mining in the High-Green Hills, round out the major sources of income.

History:
~275 A.R. House Deragan abandons the migration and settles the area which will become the County of Tenday, and the Baronies of Conn and Sib.

Well, I have this in my history, none of the player dropping is confirmed. I'd like to change that or revamp the story altogether.

~627: The Restoration of the Crown The end of the Second Republic came at the intervention of the [Western Neighbors] who installed their own ruler. This foreign king was a greater man in Chiboria than his own homeland and many of the local nobles resented his and his decedents rule, despite its competency. However, no line is free of fools.
---
~720: Sibor or Merchant's War The Sibor or "Merchant's War" was a conflict regarding the legal boandries of Crossingfield. The disagreement centered on the precice location of the boarder within the Sibor river. Was it along one of the banks, or in the center? This disagreement lead to the merchants of Crossingfield to erect a low bridge across the mouth of the river, one that stopped Siborian river merchants from entering the sea, and gave control of trade to the land based merchants of Crossingfield. After the Siborian merchants destroyed the bridge, the ensuing conflict was pursued by the last [Western Neighbor House] king, who soon found support for the war among his vassals waning. With Crossingfield flying Godhart banners and Sundermarch besieged, the nobles entered into negotiations with House Godhart, deposing [Wester neighbor House] and installing a Lord Protector and creating the Third Chiborian Republic.
~723: The Third "Concessional" Chibor Republic The Third Republic was lead by Lord Protector Orlas of House Dandercooth ("fur-clothed") of Handerholt who was a figurehead and no more. By Godhart design, The Third Republic itself was equally powerless as the law required agreement from both the Lord Protector and the Senate of Nobles to act, something that almost never happened. Despite this, the lethargic government ruled for centuries.

While The Dright includes this from about the same time:
~790-802 A.R. Both Houses join campaigns against the Esurks.
~803 A.R. Tired of war, both main branches of the Houses unite into House Derfennisy, by adoption and marriage.
Maybe this can be changed to an invasion of Chibor, and the creation of House Derfennisy as the Second Crown of Chibor, who then loses to Godhart and the conspiracy of the Chibor nobles a century later.

As for Optical, I find this interesting
The Iyas family became one of the key bastions of defense against any invasions from the north(that is from Chibor to presumably around Cairn and Heaven's Gate), and they served this role for several hundred years - in fact, until around the year 816 AR, when the younger brother of the head of the house of the time married into House E'in, and in a bizarre twist of fate became the heir to these estates.

The threats of invasion could be of from the Awaaji Ryaakin(pre-612), individual lords during Second "Bloodletting" Chibor Republic (620-627), or other machinatious events before the War of the Pale. Chibor has had highly variable political regimes, so it could have many reasons to invade The Pale, including the ambitions of possibly Derfinnisy king. Chibor also supported the False Stone late in the war. Maybe the Holding of Sarrel was revoked from Chibor or the right of tolling the sea was revoked and given to Essaniyas as recompense.

I'd like to ask NK and Bombshoo to tell me whats going on with their idea of the emperor's marraige. I need to know whether to build upon or gut my own ambition for that.

I'd be more interested in hearing about how this "republic" interacted with the main powers of that time, the nearby emperor, etc., and how such seemingly epic struggles for regional power just north of the Blessed River were not either resolved or assisted by the Pale City.

Also, bombshoo and NK's house are wed.

Also also, theDright, that's a nice start for you. I imagine your house to be a breadbasket of sorts. Your history leaves a lot to be desired, namely you have completely left out what your house was doing during the recent, bloody, realm-inclusive war. Additionally, it might be my mistake, but the way you word the Solemn Age is as if it was an entirely positive era in which infrastructure for all common citizens was improved upon (this is not the case).

@alex: I'll post a write-up on them when I have more time. This week is extremely busy. Sorry for the shortened response.

Here is something I made during school. All of this could be changed/shifted as needed.

Life of *Elinard Essil the Esurk Slayer. Also known as the Second Great Surotsi Migration.

Note: I am still twisted about whether Essil is his first name and his conquests made his house adopt it, whether Essil is his last name and therefore I need a first name, or etc. If it is his firstname, he would be Essil Garasai, Herald of Serepena.

Spoiler :
700s Serepen begins establishment at the mouth of the Saffron River
783 Essil the Esurk Slayer is Born
750s-800 Forts at Tepesi constructed, Serepenia becomes relatively secure
796-804 Essil "explores" the Saffron River and the Serpents under his father
806 Essil becomes Herald of Serepen, calls for a union of Mercenaries, Houses and Volunteers to do combat with the Esurks
809-815 1st Expedition of Essil along the coast
813 Essildell (or his southern base) is built
817-819 2nd Expedition of Essil reaches Essildell from the Saffron River
824-835 3rd, or "Great", Expedition of Essil
839/841-846 Last or "Imperial" Expedition
843 *Ranof I gains fame at the Battle of Green Mountain
845 Essil Esurk Slayer dies in battle

This all looks good with one minor note. House Tepesi, like House Sotulyn, is a fairly new family to Surotsi, invited by Avryl Sotulyn because their homeland, somewhere around the Blessed River, was so ravaged by war. The Bridge-Castle the Tepesi now occupy could very well predate them, but it would need another, more historical, name in that case.

Note: I am still twisted about whether Essil is his first name and his conquests made his house adopt it, whether Essil is his last name and therefore I need a first name, or etc. If it is his firstname, he would be Essil Garasai, Herald of Serepena.

Nothing was decided about this. It's totally up to you. The entire invention of Essil the Esuark Slayer was just because I've always liked the alliteration in Basil II's nickname, "Basil the Bulgar Slayer", and came up with him when trying to think of historical figures to name things after.

House Tepesi is a recent transplant to Surotsi
Noted.

Also, on the matter of how this reflects the "settlement" or "migration" patterns I would see Essil be the "Frontier" arm of Serepenia, establishing lots of coastal forts leading southward pre-Civil War. Essil itself doesn't own much land, but their aid in controlling the sea lanes and pirates, fighting Esurks ect ect ect would give them influence with houses more in the interior between the Essil Serpents and the Saffron River, and thus influence for Serepenia. That might be one reason this region of Surosi was so firmly Loyalist during the civil war, to the extent that House Serepenia has to be utterly destroyed.

More historical musings. This time on Essil's role in the Civil War.

Spoiler :
1300-1335 House Serepen leads loyalist houses in the Surosiri Union, funneling resources, troops, and capital to the False Stone
1335 Major Ursurper Expedition lands, one by one Loyalist Houses desert the Union
1335-1345 Serepen Annihilated and replaced with Surotsi
1337 House Essil flees from their homeland at Essilmont
1339 Marriage Alliances secured, an Esurk coalition is slowly prepared
1346 News of Serepen's final defeat collapses efforts to create an Loyalist Esurk Army to liberate Surosiri, they start over
1352 Ursurper, now Emperor, sends an expedition to Essildell. House Essil was forced to capitulate. Their homeland was stripped away, leaving them in the wild south, with their blood sullied, and with a heavy responsibility which they dare not neglect

I'm enjoying the enthusiasm and skimming over this. Can't wait until this week is over so I can sit down and actually brood over it all and help put the pieces together in #neverending. :) Apologies for yet another brief reply.

~1300-1350 A.R. Preserves the Kingdom by any means, first siding with the False Stone, switching sides after the Counts Shael betrayed him and his madness became more apparent, gained control of part of the Painted Peaks in the chaos, formation of the Barony of Highholm.

The False Stone wasn't particularly crazy, just fyi. The main spark of opposition were his domestic policies.

Also, the marriage to bomb is official. With regards to Optical's thing, there are certainly young members of the royal family who might be in the running for betrothal -- not too far into the future.

I'm having a hard time following the flow. Is there a post with links to everyone's joining posts and stories?

Thlayli is correct: there really shouldn't be "kings" or "kingdoms". We did hammer out "levels" of nobility a while ago, but they have yet to be posted and described. Players will have varying levels of power, which I've mentioned a few times. At any rate, I'll go over your post in finer detail in a few days, Dright. Thanks for posting.

(Keep in mind, too, that I'll be going through histories and stitching together an overarching background, so what you as players do not collaboratively worldbuild, I will situate either on my own or with feedback in IRC chat.)

Thlayli: the map at the bottom of Page9 of this thread has a scale. Your idea of transposing it on an Earth map is a good one. I'll get to work on it as soon as I have some time to spare.

A toast to October, which (thank Luseysi) will end soon!
