TerraNES: The Civil Experiment

OOC: I was talking about the Italy-Gaul unhistorical nonsense ;) but I'm just kidding no worries. Or are there?

So should I assume I'm in the Bronze Age?

OOC
to Hyak and Katan:
Will you join us for the burning of the far west?

IC
to Axume:
Wonderful, wonderful.

to Dakinsa:
Never mind.

OOC: Just wondering, what is the "far west"?
The High-King of Hyak was wondering the same... Do you refer to the primitives who live beyond the Makedonian March?

To: The Faithful of Keltia

See the horrors that take place in your homes, and how your leaders fail you?
Leave the desolation and destruction, make the Great Migration to Paradise!

From Vahlshallah:

If you harbor druids not of our vassals, we will request that you hand them over to us as the proper authorities, lest we be forced to come and fetch them ourselves.

Why would the druids enter Ildaris? They have no reason to; there are none here.

A precaution friends. We would hate to find out that the scum that dared to start a war against us wouldn't stand and fight till the end and fled from us to hide.

We will hand them over if they appear on the condition that they are given the option to live peacefully under your rule. If they cannot accept that, then you may punish them.

Tens of thousands of Faithful soldiers are dead. The druids in Armorica have slaughtered Faithful men, women, and children. We have not slain any in the camps in Vahlshallah. Undoubtedly there is a double standard here, but if the Armoricans insist upon continuing their defiance against the true rulers of Keltia in the form of the Bloody Throne of Beurtgang and the Fanged Throne of Vahlshallah, we will grind them under the boots of the Imperial soldiers called forth to bring them their comeuppance.

If you truly believe that the innocent are to blame for the tyranny of the evil, then I shall do as you ask without question.

Undoubtedly the people of Armorica supported it without question. We hear no tales of Armoricans saving men and women of the Faith from being murdered in their homes. We hear no tales of Armoricans saving men and women of the Faith from being rounded up and slaughtered like cattle. We hear tales of Armorican soldiers instead being allowed to assault and kill our brothers and sisters of the Faith. We cannot blame them nearly as much as their leaders, but every person plays their role equally.

After discussion amongst the leaders of the Vahlshallahn government, keep the refugees instead. We don't want them. We wash our hands of this mess.

OOC: This is a lie. Your side in this game has slaughtered the druids just as surely as my side has slaughtered the faithful. Regardless, you would pay more attention to my country than the barbarians sacking your cities and destroying your homes? So be it. Your armies will be dieing to heavily trained soldiers in the West while a tribal horde roams your lands, killing everything they see. You have a choice. Make a deal with the one who can be talked to peace(full reinstatement of Armorica and then some), and salvage your situation, or deal with the barbarians, who cannot be persuaded. You cannot face both at once and hope to win.

Don't be ridiculous. You are not in any position to negotiate terms other than status quo antebellum. If you aren't going to offer those terms then you clearly aren't interested in negotiation, not that it makes much of a difference, because once our full combined is brought to bear there won't be any question about what to do with the state that was once called Armorica.

OOC: Barbarians CAN be persuaded, either through LOADS AND LOADS of money or a similar amounts of blood. Besides, I don't think that one can realistically force a moral upper ground by now in this current conflict- if you guys didn't slaughter druids out fear, they would have out of necessity. Besides, the remaining Ipren slaves in custody were slaughtered via orders.

Also, by my count Corona will become a state this turn rather soon.

EDITOOC: Lord of Elves is quite right. Of course, then most likely begins the question of what to do which the state that is once called Vahshallah. The Teuts are not likely to stay idle, either. However, Xilesii will most likely honor their agreement with Vahshallah. Unless they get insulted again.

EDITEDIT: Assume I am OOC when I don't post a specific nation, but I will but "/Mod" when I'm being serious in the future. :)

New map includes proposal for Sugudia and the Empire of Amir.
@ Arrow Gamer, would you please detail some more about your neighbors? Also, is it OK if I detach Arin as a Vassal-State using the new Vassal Rules I wrote up? It would increase diplomatic stuff as well as potentially simulating the situation better.

@Keltia
I'd like to preface this that I made a horrible mistake. The city at the mouth of the Seine river is Calet, not Souisson; therefore that city across the river and which is Buertgang's eventual beachhead is Parissi, not Calet, and therefore would have been heavily fortified. IDK if you guys want to change it, because even if I did, the only major change right now is that Calet is the new beach-head location.

IC:
Month 1 Year 1
Danyaria has always been Faithful. Men of Vahshallah breed who stayed behind whether by choice, circumstance, or birth along the march to the promised land, they see the Buertgang as their role model for supporting them against the oncoming Buggerite hordes, and then helping push them back after they established their increasingly effective military.

And now it is time to pay them back. Their soldiers, modeled after the Iron Lancers and hardened by years of war with the Buggerites, were ordered to the main backbone of the garrison between the two Druidic Strongholds of Souisson and Parisii. However, a much more urgent adventure has come up. The Buertgang Army has been destroyed in the ruins of Saylees, and its remnants have streamed north for their garrison. The Danyarian General pondered at his next course of action. Other than his Iron Lancers, he only had a few handfuls of Militia donated by the distrustful chiefs, dispatched from the oft-raided coast.

It was the second refugee that urged him to action. The Armoricans have left the ruins of Saylees and headed due west, undoubtedly to head off the Vahshallah and her vassals outside of Condate, readying its seige. If that army is defeated by the revitalized Druids, all the Faithful gains will be lost in a single year.

And so, with a heavy heart, he brought out his Iron Lancers and three thousand Militia from his fort. Although he has not yet recieved new orders from the Buertgang capital, he knows that this situation is urgent. From his messengers he heard of a rendevous point a month's uncontested march inland, where the survivors are gathering and huddling in a sheltered vale. His messengers sent and his baggage prepared, he marched.

---------------------Same Time---------------------------

The Dragon Horde destroyed another one of the pitiful coastal forts of the Butgag people, their Chariots streaming through the destroyed gates and scattering the militia within. By this rate, all these little fortresses near this river would fall by spring, and the entire coast leading to the Pigbut coast under Butgag control would be theirs by the fall after the next spring. Of course, he scowls as he thought of the Butgag people to the west. The Fortresses are thicker, and the people tougher, and the sound of drilling men and hammering bronze could be heard. But what does he care? he needs loot to placate his restless horde, and mayhaps he can worry about the tougher nuts later.

The Storied War; Month 2 of Year 1

OOC: Remember, Stay IC. Vahshallah knows of what happened with Buertgang but not the Armorican army movements. Buertgang proper will get the news in another month-Vahshallah another 2 months or more. Also, this is "uncontested marching distances" for 1-2 months; would be shorter in contested territory or with heavy scouting/supplying of combat. Also, Gemhound's next story (which treads on no toes) is APPROVED.

Above the Vahlshallan Army
The lands were hilly, and covered in trees. Spear lake loomed in the valley below as Caedmon grabbed at his raven. Much to the bird's protest, he tied a note for Ildaris onto it. "Go to Deltarian." He let his raven go with a flurry of black feathers. Caedmon then knelt in the bushes, overlooking the Vahlshallan camp, sprawled out across the only flat spot beside the lake. They had reached the winter camp of the three armies. It was a bustle of activity, for they would be moving out the very next day. he slipped back into the brush, and told his commanders of the new rules. "After the coming battle, any faithful who surrenders, will be treated equally. They will be escorted by a small contingent of our soldiers to Ildaris." Caedmon tilted his head forwards and spat on the ground. "I know none of you will agree to this, but if we show mercy to those who choose to go to Ildaris, the Faithful armies facing us will become shells of their former selves. This is why I have made this promise to Deltarian of Ildaris. Go and tell your soldiers. Tell them there will be no punishment from me for straying from this rule. Tell them, that the punishment would be overwhelming odds. No one wants to die to a heretic."
Caedmon walked away from his generals, who were surprised by this sudden move.

Later, Caedmon let Captain Volon into the tent and saluted. "Sir, the Unsullied see your point of view, but do not agree with your proposal. Regardless, they will follow your command. We should go out and talk with the army my lord, and see what the soldiers have to say.
First, the king, with the captain of the Unsullied went out to ask questions. The first one he stopped at was a group of Dumonans. "What did you think of my proposal? Cover nothing. The gods will not be pleased with liars." The first one began to speak. "I am sorry your highness, but this new rule is absolute rubbish. They have slaughtered our people and we should slaughter there's in return!" He was then smacked hard on the back of the head by one of the other Dumonans. "What Caedmon said makes sense. Do you want to live to reclaim Dumonos?" He looked questioning at the first Dumonan who was rubbing his head with a look of defeat on his face. "That's what I thought."
Caedmon and Volon, went to each of the divisions of the army, and in turn, except for the Dumonans and an odd few, they all grudgingly agreed.

He put even more sentries in the woods than he already had, to warn of Vahlshallan patrols. When one is spotted, the caw of a raven will be heard. Then, Caedmon packed up his tent, and prepared for the move.

2.19, eighth day, ninth moon

We have reached the mountain range known as Nanbu Shanqu. Seven days of straight marching brought no increase in general morale, and each day we woke up to see the first peaks of the range still seemingly just as far away as the last. It was only on the eighth that they began to appear larger on the horizon, and even then, only marginally.

We began to feel the mountains' presence five days ago, on the fifteenth day of marching from our last camp. Since then, the shadows they cast have been growing closer, and then deeper, ironcally improving the general mood and relieving tension no end. Qian in particular is positively jubilant! Ahead of us lies the last part of our journey, up a narrow, twisting valley with cliffs and mountains on each side. Yan oversaw the construction of floats on which supplies could be transported at the last camp. Today we discarded them. The river ahead is too treacherous to use them.

2.19, fourteenth day, ninth moon

Four days of straight marching. The river flows back in the direction we came from, with countless rapids and waterfalls. We have given it a wide berth when possible.

We camp here tonight, where the valley bends north, and set off again tomorrow. Little light reaches these deepest valleys.

2.19, eighteenth day, ninth moon

We were delayed today. A wind has risen, and with it a fierce storm. One of the supply carts was caught by the wind, and about a week's worth of food for a thousand people has been lost. Morale has sunk, even with Qian's constant encouragement and speeches. Rations have been tightened.

2.19, fifteenth day, eleventh moon

The storm lasted about eight days. We constructed sturdier shelters by dismantling the tents and using the canvas and upturned supply carts (with the supplies left under the carts, not that much is left). When the storm finally subsided, we emerged. We kept moving.

Scouts ahead have reported sightings of some locals, who speak a language similar to that of the Xiong and Lun cheshou of the north. The language has more delicate tones than their guttural tongue, and is less related to ours, however: the scouts have recorded some of their speech. I have begun an attempt to decipher it, with the help of Sung - one of my organisers, and a keen academic. They appear to have herds of great shaggy horned beasts. We may be able to approach them for food.

Qian has agreed we can cut across country to avoid having to follow the large bend in the river up ahead. We will follow the valleys that cut through the area, where the locals have been sighted.

2.19, twenty-seventh day, eleventh moon

We encountered the locals roughly halfway through our long march through the mountains. They were, to say the least, extremely surprised to see us. When you have travelled through this country, it's easy to see why. The valleys are deceptively difficult to traverse on foot. The supply carts manage well, and many of the older members of the horde have been put on them, but the sharp stones underfoot cut bare feet and stick through footwear. In addition, there is constantly a steep incline or descent to navigate.

When we met the locals, herders of the animal they call yak, on the ninth day of the hard march, Sung and I had deciphered enough of the language to ask them for food. They were generous, but also more importantly pointed out the way to a small valley, further north-west. When we asked if its name was Zhanggu, one local, to our surprise, began to speak to us in fluent Xilan! It appears some of the Zhangat people, who spoke the Xilan language, had ventured here after their defeat at the hands of Xilaroi and Xiong. They had taught the language to the locals.

The valley, in short, wasn't Zhanggu - or, as the locals called it, Ulyan - but it was the site of a small town of about two thousand, named Yuen. The herder we had talked to showed us the way there, and on the way he told us of the valley we had been looking for.

The Zhangat survivors had gone there. More of these herder people lived there - they called themselves the Dawar - and most of them, thanks to the Zhangat, had some Xilan blood in them. Most had forgotten it, he'd said. But some, thankfully, have longer memories than others.

After that, our journey became much easier. The herder decided he was duty bound to show us through the mountains. Three days later, we emerged at the river.

2.19, twenty-fourth day, twelfth moon

Today, we reached the only safe crossing point downriver of Ulyan/Zhanggu. The trek upriver from Yuen was hard, and most or all uphill. A few people fell.

Nonetheless, we reached a large flat area, where the river is wide and shallow. We've camped here, and have started to move our supplies across the Yueh River. Our native guide, Shuru, estimates it will take seven days.

2.19, third day, thirteenth moon

Shuru's estimate was perfect. Today, we finished moving the final supply cart across the Yueh. Shuru shares in our excitement at being only a week's march away from our destination, but has cautioned us. He says we must stay quiet for this part of the journey. His normally joking demeanour was absent when he mentioned this. Seeing that he was serious, Qian and I questioned him further.

Apparently, this region of the Nanbu Shanqu is infested with hostile tribes.

OOC: Terrance, thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't noticed. It had originally been Parisii, and not Calet that was supposed to be fortified, but lets stay with Calet and Souison since that is how the update went. I think it would be too much of a change of canon lore to go back and change that.

Terrance you aren't answering me. Shouldn't I be in the Bronze Age? The update said I have arrived at it.

Also - 43 Spearmen?! YAY. Let's rip the world ;)

You can burn in your heathen hells, fools. We'll shatter Armorica like we did once before, and we will make sure that you know only suffering on a magnitude on a level that you cannot even begin to comprehend. You try to salvage your own miserable and desperate situation by making deals with us, but we will not listen to your pleading cries for mercy. You know that with your friends in Dumonos dead and shattered and our foothold on your coast that we can freely raid your entire coastline and slice your capital off from the rest of your nation quite easily, leaving you to try and punch through our lines while Beurtgang ravages your nation. You will not stop or halt us, or cause us pause; we are here to bring about your death, and you can no longer save yourselves at this point. If we have to cut through a forest of flesh in the east to smack the Dragon Horde back into their rightful place underneath the pedestal of true nations,we will do so, and we will make them suffer for every soldier that we lose.
