I'm playing as the Byzantines, and I can't seem to make their culture wonder. It requires Culture (Middle Eastern) and Culture (European). I have the former, but not the latter. How do I get Culture (European)? The Sevopedia doesn't specify any resource requirements, so I am not sure.

I suppose it is possible that I was beaten to it, but does that mean I got shafted out of Culture (Byzantine)?

You need to have the assimilation game option enabled, conquer an european civ (Germany and so on) and hold on to at least one of their cities.

The only way to get base cultures (European, Asian etc) other than your starting one is I believe through conquering a city with the desired base culture with the assimilation game feature turned on.

first, you need the gameoption assimilation active; this gives you the possibility to get the native cultures of civs you're not playing

example: you're playing as a middle-eastern civ I think; if you conquer a city of an European country, you get the european native culture. now you can build all european cultures, and all cultures related to it

other cultures similar are the american, canadian, australian, venezuelan and so on

Aww, that is disappointing. I don't have that option active. And I don't reckon you can change that mid-game either, right?

I like that though. Forces you to go to war if you want the benefit.

You can, but it's a bit tricky. You need to edit the config file (there's a link to it in your Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword folder, _Civ4Config) and change cheatmode=0 to cheatmode=chipotle

Then, you need to go in-game and open the console (apparently on a US keyboard it's shift+~ or something, for me it was Ö :lol: - you'll need to use google or trial and error here, I'm afraid).

You'll want the console that has two >>'s and a bunch of Python version numbering visible (yeah there's two types of consoles, told you it's tricky!)

Type the following exactly:

Code:
gc.getGame().setOption(GameOptionTypes.GAMEOPTION_ASSIMILATION, True)

And resistance shall be futile to those AI civs. :borg:

This will also work retroactively on cities you've already conquered - I know because I just did it for my current game.

The Byzantines really should have their base culture be European. It doesn't make any sense; the Anatolians during that period were Greeks, not Turks.
