POPE PAUL VI DIES, NEW POPE SELECTED. Rome, Papal States. The Catholic world mourned this June as Pope Paul VI, beloved leader of the true Christian Church, passed away after disappearing from the public eye for several months. The cause of death is undoubtedly the typical ill health of a man well over eighty and under the immense strain that is leading the world's largest religious group. The conclave immediately began the search for a successor, seeking out one to carry on the legacy and glory of the Papacy. Selected for this task was a native Italian, who previously served as a high ranking member of the Inquisition, where he had been affectionately known as "Il Duce". He had been a fervent supporter of the Church since youth from the town of Forli, and witnessed his hometown switch hands from papal control to Italy and other governments over time. He also served as a young man in the Papal army, gaining an education in warfare before turning to the clergy. Stalwart against all types of heresy and liberalism, this man has widely been known as one of the youngest considered for the position. He has also been considered a bombastic speaker, able to get others to embrace his own visions, and this charisma and his previous positions in the Papacy have made him an obvious choice. He has taken the name Pope Pius X and has pledged a strong international strengthening of the Church.

BRAZIL ESTABLISHES NEW ALLIES. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The nation of Brazil has been at the heart of two new alliances this year, which have shaken up the international diplomatic corps. The first of these was a new agreement with Spain, which has established a nonaggression pact and a number of other elements to the treaty. The treaty was heavily opposed by Germany, which continues to lead resistance against South American influences in Europe. The new alignment has caused some concern about future Brazilian involvement in the affairs of Europe, as neighboring parties are less than pleased. The second, and far less groundbreaking, agreement made by Brazil this year was a continued affirmation of the longstanding alliance between that nation and Colombia. The new pact between them has further strengthened military and economic ties between Brazil and Colombia, mostly based upon the ideologies of moralism.

News from Europe

CZECHS PASS NEW CATHOLIC LEGISLATION. Prague, Cechy-Morava. As part of a program of concessions to the Moral Defense party, the government of President Přemysl Hlavač has worked with them to pass Catholic supported legislation. The new laws have been fairly moderate when considering the original demands of the religious elements of the Czech political sphere. The new law has established Catholic Christianity as the state religion of Cechy-Morava, abandoning the secular course of previous liberal regimes. The laws have also opened the halls of the legislature to currently practicing clergy members should they choose to run for office in their relevant districts. The opposition has virulently opposed these proposals, but have lacked the power in the nation's Congress to prevent them from being passed. The government has applauded the act of Congress, stating that this is a strong step to pushing the Czech people to a more moral standing under God.

KING MOVES TO CONSOLIDATE POWER IN POITOU. Poitiers, Poitou. The new King Louis III of Poitou has moved to take the constitution into his own hands, and has looked towards consolidating power from the largely social proletarist congress. Objecting their own policies and ideals, the king has issued a order closing the nation's Parliament and forbidding the entry of the legislature's members. He has stated that this is largely to preserve the nation from undue rebellious influences, and the undermining of stability. For a tense moment it was uncertain whether or not the legislature would stand down, and the military was called out to enforce the edict. The king has declared that new elections would be held next year rather than this year as previously scheduled. He has further issued calls for the arrest and imprisonment of Prime Minister Rémy Corentin and other key members of the social proletarist party. The military has backed these moves, widely suspected due to threats of cut funding by the social proletarists, and the former prime minister has been arrested along with his cabinet. Foreign observers are uncertain whether or not the king will actually allow elections next year, but it seems for the time being that the press in the nation is either under the monarchy's control or fully supporting these new developments.

HUNGARY SEVERS ALLIANCE WITH GERMANY. Budapest, Hungary. Due to the heightened tensions created by last year's unveiling of Germany's involvement in the funding of the Hungarian proletarists, this year relations have deteriorated to a new low. The government of Hungary has clearly stated that the Germans have proven treacherous time and again and can no longer be trusted to honor or support their international commitments. They have further denounced Germany's support of Croatia, calling it an illegitimate state involuntarily removed from the Hungarian empire. They have stated that it remains clear that Hungary's interests are better supported with a new detente and alignment with the Russian Empire. The announcement was made with a grand parade, demonstrating the newly acquired T-28 tanks supplied by the Russian military. The king has stated that these armored war machines are proof that the Russians can provide in ways that the Germans never did.

EARTHQUAKE RATTLES BOSNIA. Dubrovnik, Bosnia. Measured 7.8 on the Clarke Scale, there has been a reported major earthquake along the coast of the small European nation of Bosnia. The earthquake took place not far off the coast, sending waves back and forth while bringing down numerous buildings and destruction. The local infrastructure was badly mauled by the damages, leading to worsening conditions, particularly as varied gas explosions led to uncontrollable fires throughout the city's poorer districts. The government has declared martial law, and deployed military forces to help control the area and preserve order. The damages have been extreme, but fortunately the amount of deaths appears fairly low, only in the low hundreds. The government has stated that they have full intent upon helping those hurt the most by the recent disaster and problems.

ELECTIONS IN DAUPHINE. Grenoble, Dauphine. While surrounding nations appear to face varied types of democratic difficulties and problems, the nation of Dauphine had a fairly tame electoral cycle this year. The New Conservative Party has pointed towards the overall recovery of the economy and new treaties which have allegedly secured peace throughout the area. Their detente with Occitania and Burgundy has put the nation in a prime position for continued freedom and prosperity. The continued high levels of employment and increasing amount of luxury goods has helped to further cement the party as the chosen leadership of Dauphine. Therefore it was little surprise when the New Conservative Party once more claimed a strong majority in the nation's Parliament. The Parliament has elected to retain the government of Prime Minister Roch Forestier, assured that his continued leadership will maintain the status quo of wealth and luxury that has existed since the end of the Rhine-Rhone War. DANISH ELECTIONS HELD. Copenhagen, Denmark. The successes of the government of Statsminister Einar Boye seem to have been undeniable to the Danish people, including the temerity to challenge the Scandinavians. Though the recent crisis did not end as well as many would have hoped, many admire the willingness of the Danish government to confront the Scandinavian proletarist threat. The conservatives have continued to pledge ongoing security and strength for the Danish people, promising to keep the nation safe from attack from within and without. They have further pledged continued strong ties with the Russian Empire to maintain the Danes' economic prosperity and development. This year has seen a slight weakening of the death grip of the Frie Folkeparti over the nation's Folketing, as various liberal and moderate parties have made some headways into the legislature. The Frie Folkeparti continues to maintain overall control, as Einar Boye remains the highly popular Statsminister of Denmark.

ELECTIONS IN ITALY. Naples, Italy. Elections in Italy this year have been the first to feature the involvement of proletarist movements in the ongoing process. Thanks to the compromise made with the Italian proletarists, they have been forced to legalize their political groups, allowing them to campaign for seats in Italy's Parliament. The agreement has utterly destroyed the Democratic Society Party of Prime Minister Giuseppe Bernardino, who has managed to lose support from all sides. Thanks to the effective propaganda and support of press for the social proletarists, the prime minister was accused of turning against the main platforms of working class reform and welfare. Though the traditional proletarists have been marginalized, most liberals have turned to the Social Party of Italy, looking for the social proletarists to bring new reform and protections for the Italian worker. The Democratic Society Party has all but disappeared from Parliament, and the conservatives have still been unable to organize to oppose the social proletarists. They have therefore secured a majority in Parliament as many Democratic Society members defect. One of these key individuals has been elected the new Prime Minister, a long-time proponent of worker reform, Beppe Accardi. He has stated that he fully intends on working with Parliament to establish new legislation to provide more protection for the working man in Italy.

DUTCH ELECTIONS HELD. Amsterdam, Netherlands. After the horrendous affair that was the elections of 1926, the government of the Netherlands was besieged by the voting mass. The loss of Flanders and the chaotic time after those elections have caused the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy to collapse into ruin. Stadtholder Gerbrant Smit has fallen completely into disrepute for his failure to preserve the integrity of the nation while also being unable to reign in any legislative coalition, even after the loss of the Flemish seats. He has chosen not to run for reelection, and has retired, allegedly to Hollandia, well away from the judging public. This year's elections were wide open as numerous social proletarist and liberal movements came to the fore to try to replace the PPFD. None were able to successfully capture the hearts of the public, and the National Party of the Republic was at long last able to take advantage. Marginalized by years of leftist rule, the conservatives have been relegated to a minority position. With the events of the last four years though, they have found a new voice from candidate Joël Adrichem. Pledging a stronger Netherlands more closely aligned with Germany and Europe, Joël Adrichem gave charisma to the conservative cause. This was enough for a electoral victory both in the legislature and for the position of Stadtholder. The conservatives have triumphed on all fronts for the first time in twenty years in the Dutch legislature. (+1 Stability)

ELECTIONS IN NORMANDY. Caen, Normandy. Norman elections were a fairly tame ordeal this year, especially in contrast to the changes of other Western European nations. The Unified Conservative Party is widely regarded as successful over the past four years, and Prime Minister Theirn Caron is highly respected. Therefore it was not much of a surprise when the Unified Conservatives managed to retain their majority, and even add a few seats to their overwhelming position in Parliament. To the dismay of the electorate however, Theirn Caron announced his retirement from politics, choosing to step down from the position of Prime Minister due to ill health in his family. The Parliament has chosen famed politician Phillip Dufort to lead the nation for the time being, a proponent of a third route through Western European politics and Norman economic and political independence. ELECTIONS IN ORLEANS. Orleans, Orleans. Recent strikes and political turmoil in Orleans has managed to leave their mark on this year's elections for Parliament. The New Conservative Party, while taking credit for the ambitious reforms passed on workers' rights and the establishment of unions, has still faced backlash from the masses. The liberals have widely accused the New Conservative Party of taking credit for the burdens and efforts of the unions to force the passage of reform. They have continued to trumpet themselves as the main driving force behind all new legislation. Unfortunately for the conservatives, this bid seems to have paid off in the elections. The Socialist Party has made dramatic gains in parliament, pushing forward and securing numerous more seats with the support of the unions. This has proven to not be enough for the leftists to gain control, but the New Conservative Party lost their majority nonetheless. The result was a formation of a coalition between the New Conservatives and independent moderate ministers. To this end, they were forced to pick the most moderate candidate from the New Conservative roster, as President Ethan Mathieu has stepped down. Christophe Traverse has been selected as the new President of Orleans, but the leftists have been outraged by the power plays involved, leading to a highly divided and suspect Parliament. (-1 Stability)

PORTUGUESE ELECTIONS HELD. Lisbon, Portugal. The nation of Portugal has seen unprecedented economic booms and growth over the past three years, as the nation's factories and shipyards rarely have time to even turn out the lights. With immense international contracts and production, Portugal has rebounded from the Jamaica fiasco with a vengeance. Virtually complete employment exists in the nation, as they provide planes and ships to navies and corporations across the world. With such an industry competing only with Brazil, the Portuguese have made leaps and bounds to economic prosperity. They've also created one of several open doors into Europe, having remained isolated from the overall embargo and tensions, creating new friendships in the Americas and elsewhere. This has resulted in only one possible outcome for the year's elections. Prime Minister Martim Serra and the Social Democratic Party have once more one with landslide success across the board, taking full credit for the continuing economic surge. (+1 Stability)

DEATH OF THE KING OF SERBIA. Belgrade, Serbia. To the dismay of the aristocracy of Serbia the beloved King Adrijan has passed away, leaving the kingdom to his first born son, the new King Aleksander. King Adrijan oversaw the reformation of Serbia and the establishment of a strong national alliance with Russia and the Roman Empire. He further was considered by the masses to be somewhat oppressive, expelling or executing most republican or proletarist activists in Serbia. The king also established strong influences over Bosnia, keeping that nation subordinated to the Serbian throne. His son is known as a bit more thoughtful and educated than his father, more of a moderate on social and economic affairs. He has espoused though his immense friendship and respect for the Russian Empire, pledging that alliance will be maintained with their mighty benefactor in Moscow.

BURGUNDY DECLARES STATE RELIGION. Paris, Burgundy. In a move that would have been considered unthinkable during the days of the Septembrist Confederation, the Parliament in Paris has passed a law establishing Catholic Christianity as the state religion. Emperor Robert has fully supported this measure, hoping for new reconciliation with the Papacy and the Catholic Church. The government has made it clear that other religions will be continued to allow to be practiced throughout the nation, but will not receive any official government support or recognition. New legislation has also been put forward introducing religious themed courses and education for all levels of the educational infrastructure from younger children to university courses. They have stated this is a move to help provide new insight to the heritage and culture created in Burgundy with their closely histories to the Catholic Church. The liberal opposition has been outraged by this development, saying that it is a leap away from the type of state the Confederation was, and a probable step towards a moralist tyranny like those in South America.

ORLEANS MOVES ON TO NEW PROJECT. Orleans, Orleans. The cornerstone of recent policies of the New Conservative government have been mostly focused around the agricultural modernization program. They have heralded this as their primary accomplishment during the government of President Mathieu. Unfortunately, with his end of involvement in management of government caused by the late elections, the project was unable to be completed before it could turn into a decisive factor in the said electoral conflict. After the elections were decided the new President, Christophe Traverse, has announced what will be the main focus of his administration. He has declared that is goal is to improve and modernize the roadway conditions of Orleans, bringing new jobs and better infrastructure for the nation. Construction has begun in the more urban regions, giving more work, while allowing the growth of a new economy around these efforts.

CAEN LAUNCHES NEW ECONOMIC PLAN. Caen, Normandy. After the triumphant success of this year's elections the Norman government under Prime Minister Dufort has announced the new Norman Economic Plan. With ambitious goals and ideas, the project's scope is actually far more limited than the government has let on. The repair efforts after the Rhine-Rhone War went a long way to accomplishing much of what the Norman Economic Plan outlines. It includes expansion of ports, which was already completed under Confederate management, and the creation of new infrastructure in rural regions. Despite the lofty goals of the program, critics have pointed out that much of it has already been accomplished under previous programs. What this effort really is achieving is not much more than a rapid update of already extant facilities and infrastructure. Very few anticipate it to last beyond next year or accomplish anything of real value or effort for the Norman people, beyond looking good on the political resumes of the Unified Conservative Party.

DUTCH COMPLETE RECONSTRUCTION. Amsterdam, Netherlands. The United Republic of the Netherlands was easily one of the worst afflicted by the Rhine-Rhone War, facing the brunt of the initial German attacks. Though regions of the Franco-Burgundian Confederation were more heavily fought over, the Dutch people were badly strained by the war as their forces were left in ruin. The Pacific War also devastated the local economy, as the lost of far flung possessions forced a restructuring of the home economy. Over the past five years reconstruction has been feverishly underway, and the departure of Flanders from the larger republic has reduced the amount of area the Dutch government is responsible for fixing. This year the program of reconstruction came to an end, as Stadtholder Joël Adrichem claimed full credit for the success of the effort. He has stated that this, along with the elections, marks a turning point in Dutch history, allowing them to assume a place of stronger leadership within the new European political theater.

DEATH OF BRITISH KING IN GUANGXI LEADS TO NEW MONARCH. London, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The tragic death of King Henry VIII in the bloody affair in Xinjing has led to the British throne being vacant once again. Unfortunately the king died without any readily obvious or available heirs, and an uncle has ascended to the throne. The new King Edward III has been brought to the throne and is known as an experienced veteran of Royal Army, having actually seen combat in his youth during the Great War in Poland. As a ardent supporter of the military, he has called for full focus on the war in Guangxi, anxious to avenge the death of his nephew at the bloodbath at the gala. The military and Union Jacks are closely tied to the new king, who is considered highly militaristic and prepared for the warfare to come. Many are optimistic that the new king can work well with the current Parliament, and the Union Jacks are full supporters of the new monarch and his background.

SKAJERRAK CRISIS DISSIPATES. Copenhagen, Denmark. Last year's crisis that erupted between Denmark and Scandinavia has been resolved after heated negotiations and guns remained pointed across the narrow channel. Seeking to lessen tensions in the region, the Danes and Scandinavians have come to terms at last, allowing for the resumption of normal shipping in the area. Neither side has been forced to partake in reparations, as the compromise has been fair and just, as both acknowledge that severe blows had been dealt in the fighting last year. Most of the nations of Europe have applauded the effort to restore peace, but no one is really quite sure who has emerged out on top. Simmering tensions remain between the two states, and it seems likely that these affairs will continue as the guns of both nations remain pointed towards each other. The Scandinavians have constructed a monument to those that died, acknowledging the sacrifice of those involved in destroying the feared Fat Wulda. Many believe that this will be only a temporary dissipation as the tensions subside only for the time being.

News from the Americas

ELECTIONS IN COLOMBIA. Bogota, Colombia. The Colombian government underwent elections this year, and last year most would have heavily anticipated the ongoing success of the conservative Party of Tradition. A bit of a twist took place this year as the most conservative members of the party have defected to the growing Moralist Party, which has promised popular platforms such as a prohibition upon liquors and various other mind altering substances. They remained closely allied with the Party of Tradition, but this has not proven to be enough as the true sign of the times came with the nation's presidential election, as the legislature remained almost unchanged in current sitting representatives. President Manuel Restrepo announced his intent not to run for reelection, and the Party of Tradition surprisingly backed the candidate offered by the Moralist Party, Arcadio Rodriguez. He has been respected both as a religious and conservative candidate, and easily mustered the popular support, as he continued to campaign upon a more moral and righteous society. His endorsement from members of the clergy continued to back his ongoing rise to power in this year's elections.

ELECTIONS IN HONDURAS. Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The government of President Javier Sol is known as the only one of the three former states of New Spain to have retained its democratic roots. The elections were dominated by concerns about the intentions of the new regime in Managua, not to mention the continued tensions with Mayaland. President Sol has affirmed his commitment and friendship with Vinland and Honduras's continued membership in the growing Pan-American Democratic Accord. Promising continued security for the nation and the preservation of the republic, it seems that embracing the atmosphere of fear has been enough for the reelection of most of the candidates of the National Order Party. They have affirmed President Sol as the continued head of government, and a new cabinet has been formed around him once again.

NEW PROTESTS IN CHILE. Santiago, Chile. In a tradition which has become all too familiar in Chile, liberals have once more raised their supporters and marched to Santiago, where they have protested the current regime. Calling the current moralist government corrupt and tyrannical, they have protested in favor of the creation of a new Chilean legislature. The government of Davros Cruz has not taken any action against the protestors, though a heavy police presence was secured for the site of the demonstration. The leaders of the liberals have continued their speeches and calls for reform, while Cruz has maintained that if the people of Chile want a different government, they are free to vote against him in the upcoming elections next year. He has stated that he was not elected for reform, but rather to establish a strong and moral government in Chile, and that he will continue to do so until he is withdrawn from political office.

STRIKES BUSTED IN NICARAGUA. Managua, Nicaragua. After the deposing of the legislature and establishment of a new government under the direct control of the military and President Urbina, the leftist elements of the nation have been less than pleased. Though many opposition leaders were imprisoned or exiled as a result of the regime change, the unions and their leadership have remained active. With strong proletarist and republican ties, the unions launched a major strike, shutting down the nation's railroads and shipyards. They have called for the restoration of the legislature and the resignation of President Urbina from his office due to his takeover. The President refused these demands outright and made immediate moves to end the strike through force. The military was deployed by the government to force people back to work, leading to extensive violence throughout the nation. Though few were actually killed, many have been imprisoned, and the leaders of the unions have been arrested for treason. For the time being unions have been illegalized, and the government has managed to bring the masses back to work.

WORKER REVOLT IN WESTERN USA. Denver, United States of America. Despite the official end of slavery, many black workers have remained tied to their places of employment, particularly in the western United States. The use of harsh rental agreements and low pay has enabled local landlords and business owners to essentially keep the status of slavery intact, just under a different name, and completely legally. The continued oppression and awful working conditions led to a major revolt at a super-plantation several miles north of Denver which focused on mining and industrial production. The thousands of laborers there rose up against the local overseers, killing them, and eventually looting the complex. The army was quick to respond, as did a number of local militias, hoping to quell the unrest before it could spread elsewhere, and establishing a tight cordon. The rebels managed to gain one advantage as they discovered an arsenal of weaponry, likely hidden in the neighboring abandoned mine by former leadership of the Allied Territories of America. Armed and dangerous, they attempted to spark rebellion on other super-plantations, but all couriers were quickly stopped by American military forces. The military immediately launched a full counterattack, using planes and tanks, overrunning the rebel positions. The rebels managed to inflict somewhat heavy casualties, despite being outnumbered and outgunned. The American forces were victorious, but the success came at a price. Immense political outrage has erupted in New England, as sympathetic ears turns toward the plight of blacks throughout the American West. (-2 Infantry Brigades)

OPPOSITION LEADER KILLED IN VENEZUELA. Caracas, Venezuela. The moralist regime in Venezuela under President Felix de Puga has been under harsh criticism from opponents in recent years. They have alternatively that the president has betrayed the nation to the old enemy of Colombia or that he conspires to undermine the sanctity of the republic. The most outspoken voice has been that of Benito Perz, who has called for reform and greater limitation upon the powers of the presidency. As the primary liberal candidate for the 1929 and likely the 1933 elections, Perz seemed to be lining up for future political success, building a strong following. He was viciously gunned down this year, while visiting his mistresses at a bordello in his home town of Maracaibo. While initially his supporters claimed that the government was responsible, an anarchist group was indisputably implicated in the assassination. President de Puga has mourned the death of his worthy opponent, and the moralists in general have gained ever greater strength as they allege Perz's decadent lifestyle and straying from morals and faith led to his untimely demise. JACKSONIA REINFORCES CONSTITUTION WITH NEW REFORM. Jefferson, Jacksonia. The Jacksonian legislature and President Tuff have remained highly active this year, seeking to expand upon their majority and pass helpful ordinances for the improvement of the nation. They have passed a new amendment to the constitution stating that the attached Bill of Rights may never be altered or suspended, not even in a case of national emergency. This has been inspired by the recent events in Nicaragua and elsewhere, where the president or other body has dismantled the constitution under such auspices. Lauded as anti-tyranny laws, the reform has been highly popular and supported, passing with only a few votes against it in the legislature. Some opponents have said that this could undermine the security of the nation in a crisis situation, but have been unable to truly vocalize a proper argument against the reformed laws. As another minor bit of legislation, Jacksonia has expanded the National Park system, declaring a number of scenic beaches along the coast off limits for development. Most of these have been away from any harbors or regions of economic import, and they have announced plans to allow these areas to be vacation spots for those of lower income.

NEW COLORADO RIVER TENSIONS. Boulder City, Jacksonia. After last year's continued saber rattling and disagreements between Florida and Jacksonia over the Colorado River, the situation has remained very tense. The Jacksonian government, having claimed seventy-five percent of the water output of the river in the treaty, have begun looking at building hydroelectric dams upon it. With the continued success of other programs on different rivers throughout Jacksonia, it has been theorized that the Colorado River could provide even greater electrical output. The Floridians have been outraged by this development due to the likely disruption of the local economy hydroelectric construction could have on the Colorado River. Elements of Floridian regime have alleged that doing such construction would violate any treaties previously made within the Pan-American Democratic Accord. Only surveys have taken place so far, but the tense situation has made even these lighter approaches seem like acts of economic aggression.

PADA WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS AS OLD ONES DEPART. Honolulu, Hawaii. Despite the setbacks the Pan-American Democratic Accord has suffered in recent years, it seems a bit of life has been restored to this organization. With the support of all the members of PADA, two new nations have been welcomed to the assembly as they expand their democratic relevance. First and foremost has been the entry of Peru, one of the three largest powers in South America, which had typically been denied entry by the machinations of Brazil and Argentina. The end of Brazil's involvement in PADA and a switch by the Argentine government has led to the Peruvians being allowed entry. The government of Hawaii was also invited, though there was some dispute on whether or not they qualified as an American democracy. As a strong and liberal republic the Hawaiians have accepted the invitation and now look to establish themselves as a relevant political member in a larger community. Unfortunately, the membership of PADA seems to have balanced itself out, as Hawaii and Peru joined, Nicaragua and Venezuela departed. Both left the organization in a similar timeframe, citing the Protestant dominance of PADA and anger towards a proposed ultimatum and invasion of Nicaragua to restore the legislature. This has marked another two nations out of the organization, further deteriorating its legitimacy in South and Central America.

PUERTO RICO BUILDS NEW AIRFIELD. San Juan, Puerto Rico. Hoping to increase the output of their tourism trade and economy, the Puerto Rican government has supported the construction of a new airfield outside of San Juan. Combined with a contract with various Brazilian airline companies, the new airfield focuses on providing improved access for tourists from across the world. The focus of the nation's economy has been shown to be increasingly shifting towards the burgeoning international tourist trade, as ambitious businessmen have established new casinos and hotels to attract the wealthy. This has proved successful, but has been hindered by the lack of a dedicated airfield, and with the new installation, people are no longer dependent upon seaplane airlines, but larger aircraft can now land in the city too. The nation's enterprising people have applauded this development for the increased wealth it offers to bring.

COLOMBIA COMPLETES NEW PIPELINE. Bogota, Colombia. The Colombian government has triumphantly announced the completion of the new oil pipeline across the nation, leading to new refineries in the north. This pipeline has been constructed with financial support from the nation's leading businesses, plus from interested Venezuelan parties. The Venezuelan government has cooperated in this program as part of terms within the new Bolivar economic agreement, granting them a stake in the profits. The program has also been marked as a sign of the increased prosperity and abilities of the Colombian government, focused upon the wealth that they have achieved in recent years. The nation has seen a substantial improvement in its state of affairs, and continues to be outrageously wealthy from the income granted from the Panama Canal and other extant trade agreements. The pipeline is a physical manifestation of the prosperity that continues to emerge across northern South America.

FLORIDA DENOUNCES PROLETARISM AT PADA. Dallas, Florida. The representative of the government of Florida at this year's conference of the Pan-American Democratic Accord managed to set the topic of discussion. In a highly public outburst, which many consider a political tantrum, the representative has loudly and verbosely denounced proletarism in the Americas. The focus of the virulent speech of course was upon the United Proletarist Republics of America, but many have also pointed to the social proletarist government of Jacksonia as a target of the displayed ire. The Floridians have called for a harsher line against proletarism by PADA, hoping to restrain its destructive influences, citing the recent uprising in the United States. Based on reports, it's clear that PADA itself is highly divided on the issue as two of the largest members, Vinland and Jacksonia, both have elected social proletarist governments. The delicate issue has become a major talking point for those attached to PADA, and it seems as though this could be a reason for declining membership in the organization.

AZTLAN COMPLETES OIL DEVELOPMENT. Oaxaca, Aztlan. After almost a decade of development and construction, the Aztec government has secured the completion of the local oil exploitation project. Opening a large number of regions with new infrastructure and pipelines, the effort has been focused on increasing national oil production under the supervision of the bureaucracy. The construction of these new facilities has introduced a major boon to the national economy, as the Aztlan government has managed to supplant all foreign oil companies with their new stake. They have found lucrative new markets as increased international demand for refine oil offers bountiful opportunities. The Aztec people have felt the benefits too, as new jobs and employment have been offered from the program, helping to finance new development throughout the nation. President Rodolfito Dominguez has attempted to take full credit for the successes, though members of the Democratic Party would challenge his assertions.

News from Africa and the Middle East

WILDFIRE SPREADS ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA. Queenstown, South Africa. The government of South Africa, locked in battle against a major uprising and facing the possibility of British withdrawal, has suffered a worse disaster on the home front. A major fire has spread throughout the fields and farmlands of the eastern provinces, causing immense damages and razing numerous villages and settlements. With the army fully committed to the war and unable to assist, the government of President Michael Williams has been able to offer little more than meager condolences. The locals have been forced to simply await rains and for the fires to run out of fuel to burn. The devastation has been enormous, leaving many farms and arable regions scorched and in ruin. The response against the government has been low key as most of the afflicted have begun blaming the British for their commitment to the war in southern Africa over the affairs of loyal members of the empire. It seems likely that this could lead to a surge in strength for the local national party, which continues to seek full independence from the British Empire in this year's elections.

ELECTIONS HELD IN THE KONGO. Haraldsholm, Kongo. Last year' s death of the emperor and rise of Emperor Conrad has caused a new shift for the politics of the remnants of Imperial Scandinavia. The National Vanguard Party, a moderate movement, was not supported by the late emperor, but has found much more sympathy from the new monarch. With the support of a large number of the younger aristocracy, the National Vanguard has found their old opposition decaying from within. Therefore it was not much of a surprise as they gained substantially more financing and support for their cause and platforms. They have pledged to keep up the economic growth and recovery from the disastrous wars of rebellion. This struck a chord with all eligible voters, and Henrik Eklund was given the position of Chancellor once more, retaining his post and influence.

ELECTIONS IN MOZAMBIQUE. Mozambique, Mozambique. The independence of Mozambique from the throne in Haraldsholm was fought harder politically than it was militarily. Unlike other rebellious regions, they managed to resist the influences of the British mercenaries who had stirred up so much trouble. They've also retained much of the structure and economic arrangements of the empire, and their political system remains mostly familiar. The new elections this year demonstrated that quite clearly as the reformist Liberal Party has triumphed once again, pledging ongoing reform and support for the native population of the region. They have claimed that accommodation between the various ethnic groups that now live in Mozambique is the only way to a stable republic. The elections went clearly one way as the Liberal Party has won a majority in the legislature once again, and Rashed Löfgren has been appointed once more as the chancellor of Mozambique.

CHAOTIC ELECTIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA. Cape Town, South Africa. The government of South Africa, dealing with fire, war, and British withdrawal, has seen a major collapse of the current political layout. The Conservative Party has found its base outraged and diminished with the support of the Homestead Act and the continuing disasters in the war against the Zulu. The fires which have raged without any government support have demolished the last bits of credibility the regime possessed. The Labour Party has come to the forefront promising the repeal of the Homestead Act and the end of the war to focus on more domestic affairs. During the campaign, the withdrawal of most of the British forces in the region further reduced the credibility of the conservative cause. The Labour Party officials were elected with overwhelming power, but are highly divided within themselves, and overall the government has seen a severe backlash and unrest mounting as a result of previous policies. Labour politician Robert Hazard has been appointed the new prime minister of South Africa, as people look for strong and new leadership. (-1 Stability)

REVOLT SPARKS WAR IN NORTH AFRICA. Tunis, Sardinia. The Sardinian rule over Tunisia has always been a contentious issue as the local Muslims have maintained a constant war against local authority. This year the latest revolt has emerged, as the local guerillas launched a full blown uprising against the rule of Sardinia once again. The army was well prepared to deal with this rebellion, but they were not prepared for Libya's immediate recognition of the independence of Tunis, and vow of full military support. The Sudanese have issued a similar statement, but have not yet provided more forces to the push, leading to the current conflict being primarily between Sardinia and Libya. The Libyans launched a full invasion of southern Tunis as the rebellion began, and they pushed quickly against the Sardinian border guards. Eventually the Sardinians recovered from the ongoing rebellion, and managed to put their forces up against the Libyan invasion, as their carrier and fleet provided support from the seas. Thanks to air superiority, the Sardinians brought the push to a standstill despite their own lack of comparative training and firepower. Attempts to push back the Libyans failed, and a stalemate as emerged for the time being as the front has stabilized near Sfax. The Sardinians have appealed to their Corsican allies for support, while Libya has called upon their allies in Egypt and Sudan to push back and achieve victory.

PRESIDENT SLAIN IN KURDISTAN. Cizre, Kurdistan. The Kurdish people were sent into shock this year as President Habib Tawfeek was assassinated during an arranged visit to supporters in Mosul. Hoping to build up support for ongoing policies and construction, President Tawfeek had just finished giving a speech when he was attacked and gunned down by an individual from the crowd. The individual has been identified as a Turk national, who was killed by the guards of the president after he attacked. Despite the guards' quick action, this was not enough to save the president's life, and they were unable to properly react to the situation otherwise. The resulting gulf in Kurdish politics has led to immense political confusion as the Parliament struggled to find a successor for a new regime. The Progressive Party was badly split on their choices and the infighting was horrendous, until they finally picked someone they all loathed equally, Juda Amjad. As a politician, he has been a minor member of parliament and not very eloquent. As a comprise he has been widely dissatisfying, but no other alternative has existed. He has pledged to maintain the status quo to the best of his ability, but it remains to be seen if he can actually achieve this most basic of promises. This has been the latest in an increase in tensions between Turkey and Kurdistan, as local military forces remain anxious though the domestic dispute among the Kurds may forestall outright new hostilities. ROMAN COUP ATTEMPTED IN TADJOURA. Tadjoura, Tadjoura. The establishment of the new nation of Tadjoura has widely been fixated upon the Roman and Russian soldiers who have been settled there with their families. Being given a new chance at a life outside of their home nations, these soldiers have been given land grants or new jobs aiding in a growing economy. There has been some rising tensions as the predominantly Greek Roman forces have clashed with the Russian ones. An ambitious Greek general sought to overthrow the current Russian monarchy and shift the balance of power from the Russian side of things to the Greek side. Assembling a cabal of like-minded soldiers and Greek nationalists, the general made a play to oust the monarchy and depose the current regime. Hoping for the support of the Roman Expeditionary Force, they made a move on Tadjoura itself. Unfortunately, the Romans have remained firmly behind the current monarchy, backing them, as has the rest of Tadjoura's young military. Unable to make it into the city, the generals forces were surrounded and fought valiantly to the last, being utterly destroyed in battle. The general was not taken alive. PAPACY WORKS TO IMPROVE THE HOLY LAND. Jerusalem, Papal States. The Papacy has shown a new interest in the Holy Land, decrying the neglect and apathy of previous rulers. They have stated their intent to help build up the infrastructure and utilities of the Holy Land, providing new standards of living for the residents. This has included the construction of new roads and sewage systems, helping to improve the lifestyle particularly in the poorer regions of the holding. This has also included the government financing of new electrical plants and facilities to expand lighting and heavy machinery. The new program is estimated to take at least another three to five years, as much effort and financing is required to build this infrastructure almost from scratch. The new Pope Pius X has claimed that the Church always looks after the faithful, also aiding all those who live under the benevolent and complete rule of the Vatican.

NEW FIGHTING IN SOUTHEASTERN AFRICA. Kalemie, Burundi. Even as the British continued to fight to the south, the African rebellious states seem unwilling or unable to unite against their former imperial oppressors. The Burundi nation, having been raiding throughout the region to support the fledgling nation's tenuous economic system, have faced a war with southern Zambia. The Zambians have retaliated for these raids this year by using their limited military force to drive north and defeat the nuisance of the raiding. There was a substantial feint attack to the west which worked perfectly, diverted the capacity of Burundi's defense in the wrong direction. The feint turned into a bloody engagement, but left the door open for an assault upon Kalemie itself. The Zambian army managed to take the Burundi capital and outflank their forces, which have withdrawn further into the interior. The government of Chokweland has condemned this move, and mobilized troops to the border, threatening an escalation of the conflict if a peace is not made.

ELECTIONS IN ZAMBIA. Lusaka, Zambia. Really the only concern which has been reflect in the nation of Zambia's first elections has been that of the ongoing wars with Britain and Burundi. While the fighting against the British has been halted for the time being as the former imperialist oppressors remain stalled in the south, the war with Burundi is very real and close by. The constant raiding and threats to the local life by Burundi has made the safety of villages and towns in the area of utmost concern to the local populace. The war and its successes has done much to bolster the reputation of Prime Minister Henry Afolayan, who remains the source of the spirit of the Zambian people. Therefore, with his sponsorship of the Unity Party, there was very little doubt who would secure a majority in the young nation's parliament. The Unity Party has achieved almost complete control of Parliament, only losing several seats to a few odd radicals. Henry Afolayan has been chosen as the prime minister once again, eager to lead and protect his people from harm.

ZULU WAR CONTINUES AS BRITISH WITHDRAWAL IN SOUTHEAST AFRICA. Bulawayo, Zululand. Throughout the first half of the year, the British continued to reinforce and consolidate their positions in the territories taken in combat from the rebellious Zulu. Meanwhile, the South Africans have struggled to rebuild their armies and contain the uprising which has emerged in their territory. The British and their Dominion continued to fight against Zulu raids, while quelling new sources of rebellion within South Africa, inflicting heavy casualties upon the raiders. All this changed with the disaster in Guangxi, as the British immediately scrambled to prepare a response against the Red Army attack and retribution against China. The British began withdrawing their military forces, slowly pulled out of the interior and towards Bulawayo. The South Africans began assuming the main roles and positions, but found themselves badly stretched, especially as British planes were the first to withdraw. The South Africans were pushed back in a series of brutal conflicts, even losing some of their own territory. The British have left only a minor force remaining as they continued to withdraw in preparation of the rising conflict in the Far East.

EGYPT BEGINS INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM. Cairo, Egypt. The government of Egypt has begun an ambitious effort to help develop the economic potential of northern Egypt. Egypt has been badly mauled by years of war and imperial neglect, almost up to thirty years of ongoing problems and fighting. The rebellions against Spain and Italy have done much to damage the local infrastructure, as well as British raids during the Great War. Though these may have been years ago, the damage remains clear, as the nation looks to recover as they start as a newly freed republic. The Egyptians government seems to be well on the road to such recovery, pledging the start of a new infrastructure program designed to build new roads. Also included are a number of minor infrastructure enhancements for sanitation, irrigation, and railroads. The cost is heavy indeed, as the Egyptians estimate that it could easily take over a decade to achieve all the goals currently laid out.

News from the Far East

BOMBING IN COLOMBO. Colombo, Netherlands. Early in the year the city of Colombo on Ceylon, a bomb exploded destroying substantial property and killing numerous people. The Dutch authorities in the city of Colombo on the island of Ceylon responded quickly to the bombing attack upon the local police headquarters which left dozens dead. The Dutch have claimed that local rabble rousers have vowed a war upon the innocent population of Colombo, seeking to undermine imperial rule. No organization has taken credit for the attack, which has been the latest and most violent in a number of incidents throughout Colombo. Foreign observers claim that the work is a single small organization of local natives seeking independence from imperial rule. The Dutch have denied these claims, claiming the work to be that of anarchists and proletarists, also promising an immediate crackdown and improved defense for their holdings in Ceylon.

REGIONALIST PROTEST TURNS VIOLENT IN INDIA. Bangalore, India. Tensions have continued throughout the myriad principalities of India, as the nation struggles to maintain order and cohesion among the young nation. New protests were held in the city of Bangalore, as the local population marched in favor of a regional government and autonomy rather than centralized control in Bombay. Chanting in the local Tamil tongue, the residents of Bangalore marched upon the local government buildings, calling for the creation of a local nation and freedom. The army garrison in the city responded immediately, and with the tense situation, this resulted in unexpected gunfire leading to over a hundred casualties among the protesters. The protesters fled and dispersed, but those who died have been revered as martyrs for the regionalist cause in India. This has undermines the central government, far more than last year's abortive rebellion ever could. The government in Bombay has continued to espouse the boons of a unified Indian nation, claiming that it would be the only way to protect the people of the subcontinent from the resumption of imperial oppression. RED ARMY STRIKES IN JAPANESE CHINA. Peking, China. After several years of building up their forces for an uprising, the Chinese Red Army has launched a major offensive against Japanese forces in China. Recent reinforcements have provided the Japanese with an increased amount of armored capacity, as they look to maintain order in the outlying regions of the empire. As tensions mounted along the border with the Unified Realm of China, the Japanese were forced to withdraw a number of their troops to match a Chinese buildup in the west. This provided the opportunity for the latest military actions by the Red Army, striking hard at the Japanese throughout the region. Numerous tanks were destroyed in narrow city streets, while outposts have been razed by the rebellious attacks. The Red Army has marched on to success after success, claiming that the time for full revolt is nearing against the oppression and tyranny of Japan. Their victories have certainly undermined the Japanese rule in China, leading to many deaths as the Red Army wins actual battles in both the countryside and the cities. Foreign observers doubt that they have the power or arms to actually lead a full scale uprising against Japanese control. DOMINION VOTE HELD IN AUSTRALIA. Sydney, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. As promised by the British Parliament, a new vote has been held in Australia on the possibility of reformation into Dominion status. The options granted were the creation of a new Dominion for the continent-sized colony or the remaining of the nation in the larger British Empire. Without too much surprise, the vote was held among eligible citizens of the empire, and most have turned out to vote in favor of dominion status. Similar to both South Africa and Guangxi, this would mean the creation of a new King of Australia, as well as the creation of an independent Parliament. Similarly this would mean complete autonomy in domestic affairs, while still respecting the rights of existing British business and foreign policy. The nation seems content to remain within the larger empire, but with a new development of autonomy and a new relationship with London.

CRISIS SPARKED BY XINJING ATTACK. Xinjing, Guangxi. The Dominion of Guangxi prepared elaborate and grand backgrounds for the Vigintennial Celebrations this year. The center of the gala was an immense party and firework display held in Guangxi, as the assembled personages from around the world watched. Despite intensive security efforts, at the evening firework display, three prepositioned and concealed mortars throughout the outskirts of the city, opened fire upon the gathering. Using explosive shells, chaos immediately broke out, as many died and began to attempt to flee from the complex. Massive damage was done, and while the guards attempted to locate the attackers, they could not before over thirty shells had been dropped upon the gathering. Many of the present leaders and representatives were slain, including both the King of Guangxi and the King of Britain. The rebellious Red Army claimed full credit for the attack, and strong evidence seemed to exist linking the Unified Realm of China to the Red Army, and captured Red Army soldiers have stated that they were acting to claim a bounty offered by the Realm for the death of the King of Guangxi. Back in Europe, the British public were outraged by the death of their king, and an immense clamor for retaliation towards China has emerged, calling for a push to end the current tyranny. Despite their own wounds, other nations appealed for calm, though the British have announced their declaration of war. They were able to respond as British pilots launched a daring raid from the Guangxi border, dropping numerous bombs upon Lanzhou. The pilots in the raid had been forced to actually land and refuel deep within the Chinese border, before taking off in the wilderness and striking. The resounding success of the raid has led to jubilance among the British, showing that their forces can strike at any time they choose against a significant enemy. Several skirmishes have been reported along the border, as Chinese and Guangxi forces have fought in battle, and the British have mobilized forces from across the empire to arrive in Guangxi to bolster their already substantial garrison.

THE NEW KING OF GUANGXI. Xinjing, Guangxi. Even as the fires from the gala were still smoldering, the Dominion of Guangxi began its search for a monarch to lead the country in the likely troubled times ahead. Though still fairly young, the first child of King Richard has been selected as the heir and new monarch of the people of Guangxi. Taking the name King John II, the new ruler was set to enter military service in the next few years, but the unexpected death of his father has waylaid those plans. While his father had been a noted proponent of Guangxi and its budding strength in China, the new King John II has sought to enter politics with a more balanced approach. While having only just returned from his traditional education in Britain, he has still maintained close ties with other aristocrats in China. He has pledged that the death of his father will be avenged, promising the full wrath of Guangxi to descend upon the Unified Realm of China and the Red Army it supports.

PAPACY REFORMS FINANCIAL POLICY. Rome, Papal States. In a controversial move, Pope Pius X has overseen the establishment of a new fiscal policy for the Papal States, claiming that the old ways of finance are no longer relevant. To this end the Papal States has abolished inheritance taxes and capital gains taxes. Income tax shall be lowered by ten percent from its current level for residents. Non-residents and companies belonging to them will not be subject to exchange controls. Corporate tax is to be kept low to encourage foreign investment, and utilization of extant finance in the papal states. Privacy laws to protect the banker-client confidentiality have also been installed. These laws mimic several laws passed by the Swiss, Danish, and Portuguese governments in the past twenty years, seeking to establish a strong and modern financial system. Opponents in the Papacy are concerned about the secularism of this approach, and the turn towards essential usury is not popular.

MAYANS NATIONALIZE MINING INDUSTRY. Belize, Mayaland. The Mayan government has passed new legislation this year nationalizing the country's various mining companies and installations. The new laws have resulted in the seizure of significant private property, mostly locally owned and operated. Some of the mining facilities were owned by risk taking American businessmen out of Charleston, but their assets with the mines have been duly taken as well as the local operations. General Ceh Pech has stated that this is a major move to establishing the economic security for the nation, allowing the government control of resources vital to national defense and prosperity. This has come as the government has investigated the possibility of reopening several gold mines in the southeast, as they attempt to determine whether there is any ore left to exploit from centuries of mining.

NEW INITIATIVE FAILS IN OCCITANIA. Toulouse, Occitania. In order to help the nation prosper from the developing global economy, the government in Occitania sought to exploit several other markets. This has been primarily focused on what many consider cutting edge fields of research and development, establishing new government companies, and then dividing them among investors. The program as a whole has been a miserable failure, wasting government funds as each company failed nearly as quickly as they were established. Economists suggest that the cause could be the government's attempt to control the nation's economy restricted the free market conditions which would have allowed these agencies to prosper. On the other hand, most believe that it is likely that these industries have already been thoroughly established in other nations, easily able to supply and provide these resources far more cheaply than any local Occitanians could hope to accomplish. This has been a horrible failure of government policy, and could even threaten the current regime with being ousted for the abhorrent waste of resources.

NEW MINISTRY ENCOURAGES SHOOTING SPORTS IN JACKSONIA. Jefferson, Jacksonia. The Jacksonian government of President Tuff has continued its focus upon the people by providing new funding for the new Ministry of Sports and Education. This new part of the expanding government has been developed to help regulate and manage various sporting activities and their integration into the educational system. While this has been mostly linked to the increased emphasis on shooting sports which have developed in the nation's school curriculum, there remains other significant elements. Among these has been the creation and support for a national varukorgboll league, and their hopeful bids for entry into the Vinlander leagues and international competitions. The new regulations have standardized the sport in Jacksonia, mostly upon Vinlander rules of competition, and it seems likely that the entry of Jacksonian teams will improve the international legitimacy of this increasingly popular pastime.

1932 OLYMPIC CITY CHOSEN. Geneva, Switzerland. The Olympic Committee was heavily divided upon city choices this year as the organization met to determine where the 1932 Olympic Games will be held. Primary among concern was access and ability to create the facilities required for the safe and secure holding of the Games. Despite Spain's recent economic recovery, the city of Valencia was eventually taken out of the running due to security and construction concerns. This left the Russian city of Sevastopol and the American city of Columbia. Both two presented strong cases for the decision, but the Committee narrowly voted to select the new city of Columbia in the United States of America. Chosen for the security of the region, as well as for the numerous and modern facilities offered by this planned city, Columbia has been clearly marked as the obvious choice for the Games. Preparations have begun by the local city commission to set up the games for 1932, as a year remains for the needed construction and development of infrastructure.

Alone in the Sands
A government sponsored novel distributed in the new Persian libraries is Alone in the Sands by Ebraham Dara Sharazi. It has proven to be exceptionally popular with members of the middle class due to its existential nature and concepts. The novel, depicts a honorable Persian calvaryman who is abandoned in the deserts alone without his horse after an Arabian skirmish. He wanders alone for days before coming across some ancient structure. The structure depicts large humanoids with insectoid features, particularly those of scorpions, hunting large wildlife which is depicted as small, and lording over nomadic tribesmen. The book has been a fine example of new Islamic writing, also found to be quite appealing to the growing literate peoples of Persia. Surprisingly, it has also found an audience in Western nations, as it increases publication under various other names. This has been shown as an example that even literature when published essentially by a government can still be entertaining.

Humanist Manifesto
As a response to the growing influence of Moralism in the Catholic world, a member of the intellectual caste of Occitanian society, disgruntled by the political changes which have marginalized French power and optimistic about the positive global economic boom, has developed the Humanist Manifesto. The central thesis of the manifesto has been that human morality must be based in secular thinking, that religious political representation curbs freedom, especially of religion itself, and that dignity and equality should be guiding principles in contextualizing morals within society. They reference the anti-democratic tendencies of Moralist thinkers to refer ominously to “the will of the people” as if a homogenous entity. As well, Humanism tends to emphasis the optimistic aspects of human kindness and solidarity, clashing with the ideas of inherent human evil. The writing has been condemned by the Catholic Church in Occitania, and reflects that it is a negative approach. On the other hand, secularists have been rallying around the manifesto, which they see as an alternative to the concepts recently bandied about by the Papacy and its supporters.

Los años de la Mancomunidad
This story, written by Rodolfo Sánchez, is the first story of a new genre Rodolfo calls "ucronía" (so called because it means "time that does not exist", like "utopia" means "place that does not exist"), a genre that deals with an interesting proposition: what would have happened if something in history happened in a different way? The point of divergence for this particular story is during the 19th century, during the American Civil War. In our world, Spain supported the military government against Brazil and Britain's support for the civilian government, sparking a war between both sides whose consequence are still felt currently. In the world of Los años de la Mancomunidad, Spain decides to remain neutral in the American Civil War, leading to a defeat of the military government after several years of war. The independent, formerly Spanish nations still remain linked to Spain through the Mancomunidad de Naciones, an alliance of nations within which trade, contact and more things take place. The Empire is still one of the great powers of the world, but a surgent France and Germany, plus the British and Swedish Empires and the United States of America are powerful counter-checks to this. Brazil remains in this story a great ally of Spain, an alliance that has lasted for nearly a century. This literary entry has been mostly notable as a sign of newfound Spanish cultural relevance, and has achieved popularity throughout the Spanish speaking world.

Racism: What the Gospel Teaches
Cardinals Hifikepunye Pohamba and Carlo Mussolini of Chokweland and Italy respectively, noting the anti-negro policies in European colonies respectively have written a dual-authored book denouncing social and racial darwinism as contrary to religion. Noting that the bible makes clear that Christ came for all men and their salvation and that all men are children of the same original parents and equal under God, with this truth making the assertion of racial inequality an error. They go on to explain that protestantism, in rejecting truth and making biblical interpretation dependent on personal opinion, allowed for the ignoring of this truth in protestant colonies in Africa such as the Scandinavian Empire and South Africa and the corresponding suffering and oppression of the negro, as protestantism simply followed secular norms and served the powers of the "world", instead of following what God taught. This is a clear proof they say of the doctrinal error of protestantism, and the need for a true authority, the magisterium, when reading scripture, and the problems of personal interpretation. They conclude their work with a call for racial equality in the african colonies, and for protestants to read their bibles as a whole, stating that in so doing they will see the reality of this error and others, and behold the biblicality of the Catholic Faith.

The Twisted Tango
Argentina hasn't recently so thoroughly demonstrated its dominance in the new art of cinematography, just content to rake in large sums of money for the power players in Rosario. They have demonstrated their cultural power this year with the phenomenal hit of The Twisted Tango which many would note is a take off the old English play, "Romeo and Juliet" by Francis Bacon. Featuring the fates of two Argentines, one Catholic and one Protestant, it depicts two thoroughly feuding families in the late nineteenth century. The poor Protestant woos the Catholic, and together the two families are brought closer by the end, a positive conclusion as opposed to the original story. The film has been astoundingly directed and acted, with a huge cast and a full reproduction of Buenos Aires from that era. The quality of the film has allowed to find massive international audiences across the Americas and Europe.

@TheMeanestGuest and Nintz: Due to conflicting ideas of what Germany was selling and what Orleans thought they were buying, that part of your orders has been cancelled. There is a difference between construction rights and the sale of a single unit, and I suggest that be made clear in any future discussions between you two.

Remember, a lot of money does not a good educational system make. At least not on its own.

@Dunebear: I wasn't sure whether you wanted the public infrastructure to be a recurring policy or a one-time project. For the time being those funds have been banked.

@Ailedhoo: As stated in the PM I sent for you, the amount you have to spend is your EP+Bank. Domestic Spending is just what needs to be spent to fulfill your domestic policies such as education. See the first post for the full rules.

I've added another element of OTL history to the list of things that will never appear here: A Game of Thrones.

@Nintz: Because your original bomber design couldn't fly, it's been somewhat revised. Excess amounts of EP have been refunded.

@Quisani: One of your cultural contributions was ignored because the concept and person featured in it has already been called dibs upon by another player.

@Grandkhan: Dammit man, couldn't you have posted the political parties thing with your orders?

@ChineseWarlord: Yes, but as I said in past updates, I'm done reporting on every little military academy you people are obsessed with establishing. I've decided that for updates, I just don't care about that sort of thing. As for cultural stuff, I felt that Milarqui's submission of an alternative history was more interesting and developed than the one you posited, mostly because it be viewed as more "likely" than our own world would be by the readers of this world.

lurker's comment: @Nintz and Christos in particular: I would just like to poke my head in to remind you both of term 4 of the Treaty of St Gallen, regarding the parts of Burgundy west of the Rhine that were annexed by Germany, because I think there might be a danger of it being forgotten otherwise:

V. Similarily, strips of land across the Rhine River and adjacent to the Ruhr shall be given to the Imperial German Union, and ruled as a reasonable and rightful border land, to prevent any further agression against the German people by French usurpers. This land will be ruled properly, and fairly under German law, and it's citizens of French and German origin will be afforded the same rights as any basic German citizen. French nationals will be free to leave the land as they so choose. This land will be given the right to hold a refendum upon wether it wishes to remain in Germany, or be ceded back to the neighboring French state after a period of 5 years.

There's also this:

XXVI. The Spanish government will not be expected to pay previously requested war reparations to the Imperial German Union, but must immediately hand over it's Indian Colony to the Imperial German Union. This colony shall be ruled by the Imperial German Union for a period of up to 5 years, at which point it will be allowed to remain a German "colony", become independent, or join the state of India.

Also, more generally, I would like to express my dismay that absolutely no-one in the ex-Confederation is showing any trace of revanchist Septembrist liberalism as a reaction against the alternatives of Drexlerism and all this Catholic-style conservatism. I do hope that Septembrism comes back one of these days, and that the sixty-odd years that it stood united leaves some sort of impact on its successor states.

He's not wrong abut the clauses, have them in my notes for next year, thanks for the reminder spryllino! Probably should have done a article about preparing for the votes or something as an "official" reminder.

Theological Notification on Usury: L'Osservatore Romano

-

Many people are concerned that the recent financial reforms are usurious, and contrary to the divine religion. These concerns are ill-founded.

Firstly, to define usury, usury at its core is an immoral financial loan. An example the angelic doctor uses is the charging of interest. He argued charging of interest is wrong because it amounts to "double charging", charging for both the thing and the use of the thing. Aquinas said this would be morally wrong in the same way as if one sold a bottle of wine, charged for the bottle of wine, and then charged for the person using the wine to actually drink it. Similarly, one cannot charge for a piece of cake and for the eating of the piece of cake. Yet this, said Aquinas, is what usury does. Another example would be granting a loan that the subject cannot repay, or on the part of the state taxing too heavily, forgetting that what is taxes is the individuals own money.

If we then look to the laws His Holiness recently approved then, we can see there is no such usury at all in them. On the contrary the laws are anti-usurious in their nature and fundamentally christian in that they seek togive men more use of their own money by minimising tax obligations, and abolishing the more unjust tax laws that have accrued to the Papal States over the millenia. This relaxation of taxes simply allows men to retain more of their own money, instead of it going to the state.

We can see this christianity when we take note that the poor, due to these laws, will face less burdens of tax on the one hand, while with the same hand business is encouraged and promoted for the increase of national wealth and the creation of jobs to which men can put their industry to use. The abolition of inheritance taxes furthermore means that the state no longer will appropriate part of what rightly belongs to the son from his father, and is clearly anti-usurious.

Taking then that these laws are not usurious and in fact are anti-usurious in intent, we can see clearly here that a modern finance system is not contrary to the divine religion. Indeed we see that adherence to the precepts of the faith assists in both the temporal and spiritual well-being of society precisely because it proceeds from and subsists in the truth. What usury then may occur will occur not as a consequence of these laws, which rest on sound christian teaching, but of the evil of men as it always has, although here we hope it will be lessened due to the oversight of our financial authorites guarding against usurious practices that would bring men to ruin. Through these reforms therefore, His Holiness has sough to make the papal states an alternative to the secular financial centres of the world, a place where business can reconcile itself to the truth of God, and insodoign prosper and serve as a positive force in society (something surely lacking where secularism reigns).

To: The Catholic World
From: The Holy See

The faithful in the Holy Land where Christ himself walked, and indeed its entire population have been left impoverished due to neglect from the Mamluks, the Arab Empire and wracked by conflict during the wars against these powers. The Holy See thus seeks to rectify this situation. We therefore inquire as to whether christian nations, seeking the restoration of the Holy Land to its proper dignity out of charitable love for its people and for their fellow christians, would be willing to donate some small amount of funds to assist in the great works we have embarked upon for the ends aforementioned?

Although the Holy See cannot recognise the spurious claim of your King to an imperial dignity. It is clear to us that he is repentant of the heresies that pushed him to that temporal hubris and seeks reconciliation with the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, outside of which there is no salvation.

To this end, and having recieved word of the Kings contrition from the royal confessor. We henceforth decree the lifting of the Excommunication that was laid out upon the King, and restore him to good standing with the Church.

sincerely

OOC: And Germany can ignore it if it so wishes. That's the nice thing about being big man in Europe.

OOC: Breaking ones words has consequences however ;), If Germany shows by breaking the treaty it established that it is untrustworthy, it is hard to see how nations will remain aligned with Germany. Afterall if one can't trust Germany to keep a treaty it pushed through, how then can a nation trust Germany to come to its aid in war, or generally be a good ally?

Oh, and breaking the Treaty of St Gallen may or may not lead to war, or in internal unrest in the relevant territories.

In light of recent events many picture the nations of Florida and Jacksonia to have grown further apart in a rift of relations. While our ideologies may differ, our two peoples, Floridans and Jacksonians, have nothing to gain and everything to lose when we do not cooperate. To this effect, the governments of Florida and Jacksonia have co-wrote a treaty in an effort to ensure the continuation of positive, beneficial relations between our two peoples, and for the preservation of peace and prosperity on our borders.

The Liberty City Accords

I. In an effort to ensure future water and power needs of the Colorado between the nations of Florida and Jacksonia, construction will begin on a major Dam on Lake Liberty (OTL Lake Mead)

II. All laborers on the Lake Liberty Dam, whether they be from Florida or Jacksonia will be a member of a Union, with all the rights that Unions are entitled to.

III. Discrimination of laborers of non White descent, including those of African descent, will not be tolerated in any way shape or form. Equal pay will be given for equal work, regardless of race.

IV. Jacksonia and Florida will agree to not construct any Dams on the Colorado that are not co-ran in terms of beneficiaries of power and water from the Dam

V. Jacksonia, with the understanding that they will be receiving more water and power as a result of the agreement brokered by Vinland, will be paying more, but will not discriminate against Floridan companies in the construction of the dam.

VI. Jacksonia will, in the spirit of friendship and cooperation with Florida, institute the "Good Neighbor Clause" to the agreement on the split of the Colorado. In years of severe drought, Jacksonia will voluntarily reduce their usage of the Colorado in an effort to ensure the survival and sustainability of Floridan farmers. In exchange, Florida will introduce strict rationing of water as needed for the area, and rationing will not be determined on a racial basis.

VII. Jacksonia will assign non military personnel to guard the Dams. Neither Jacksonia or Florida will establish Garrisons at the Dam.

VIII. This agreement is only honored with a democratic government of Jacksonia and a democratic government of Florida. This agreement will be made void if either of our nations are no longer democratic.

Signed Liam Tuff, President of Jacksonia

OOC: Well, Germany could, in practice, I think anyone would concede, break the treaty without any substantial consequences; but I doubt that would be in character, really, and I consider that a constitutionally governed state like Germany ought to be regarded as having mechanisms in force that prevent such actions, especially given that the same government is in power, I think, now, as was in power at the time...

No. Remember that your own Chokwe peoples, as well as the Burundi, have led raids on our formerly weak nation of Zambia. We can hope for peace with you, but that will only happen lest you stop your breaches on our territory. You will not be 'forced' to intervene, you only wish that for your own gain. Our conquest of the Nation of the Burundi, a nation led by an illiterate and warmongering man, was for the bettering of all involved.

So no.

@EQ? Really? I spent a while contemplating how to write in that particular reference. Okay, but I would like to formally dibs the other idea that I had "Potential Future Cultural Works." If you could send that excerpt of what I had written to the person who has dibs on it, I'd appreciate it. They don't have to use it, but it might serve as mental fodder to produce a better writing than mine.

Nice update EQ.

Eh, the parties were more of a fluff thing than anything else. Boye was going to win either way, lets face it, it doesn't matter what everybody else wanted. :p

Quick question: should the thing I was doing with the fortifications be in the stats? It seemed like a project to me.

Also, why do I keep on losing money per turn? Whats going on there? It seems weird, because Denmark's an industrialised economy just like the rest of Europe and should be experiencing similar trends re: increases in consumer spending.

Ed: also I think i should have one more Air Force Quality from the gains I got last year, which hasn't been updated for some reason.

Sermon of Pope Pius X on the Occasion of his Coronation

-

Rejoice in the Lord, who condescended to debase himself by taking up our human nature, and who out of compassion for man commited himself to suffer and die upon the cross in great agony, so that men might be freed from the tyranny of sin and the devil, and raised up to its true God-given dignity. Yet also wonder. Wonder why did this great God do this for you, for us, for we are all poor and detestable sinners. Christ died for you and your sins, for each individual person individually and especiallly. Why? It is a testament to the mystery of God that God the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, chose freely to die for men so that in rising from death man might be raised into Gods own eternal life.

What however can we learn from this truth now? We can learn that we, in implementing the will of God, must aim to liberate men, to show man the truth that they, in submitting themselves to the sweet yoke of Christ, gain infinitely more than they think they have. For in submitting to Christ and sacrificing the ego, in dying to oneself , truly man is raised up in life, blessed life, and shatters chains of the devil which would bind man to be as a slave to sin and worldliness. A man in truth, in sacrificing himself on the altar of God, gains the infinite treasure of heaven which is eternal and loses nothing of who he really is. This self-purification, this sacrifice of the ego on the altar of the Lord, this renunciation of self to the will of God is the true liberation of the christian, and indeed is the only true liberation that exists.

Yet there are many who in denying that man must die in himself to arise in life, pervert liberty, warp its true reality and who proclaim they would make men free, but rather bind men in ignorance in diabolical chains. For about the world upon this dark hour, the devil roams about like a roaring lion seeking the ruin of souls, and his instruments blind and deaf as they are, hasten to carry out his purpose. Everywhere our primordial enemy hastens in restlessness and fury so that as many souls as possible may be considgned to eternal perdition, and that the name of God and of His Christ may be blotted out from the minds and hearts of men.

Thus where in service to God, princes raise up the liberty of men, the agents of the enemy have rallied in the nefarious hope that they may destroy what has been wrought. In Czechy Morava, where that nations christian government in recognising the true religion as the traditional and foundational religion of the Czech people proclaimed an end to suppression of priests right to freely choose like any other citizen to stand for office if they wish they protest. The Czech government effectively proclaimed an end to a religious test for office, something the liberals so often agitate for, and yet the liberals hypocritically protest!

They protest this liberty because the "freedom" they promote is not freedom at all, but merely license for themselves to do as they wish, without restraint, without fidelity to law, and without reference to society or the common good. The liberals "freedom" in truth is merely freedom for themselves to impose themselves and their views on the whole of society so that it may be remade in their image, as if it belonged to them. To those who would object, who would uphold views contrary to their own, they pour slander, they calumniate, mock and scorn, they deny and attack in the hope that men may not wake up to the dictatorship of relativism that seeks to consume them in its all-encompassing totalitarianism. Thus they immediately protest when things do not go entirely their way, and like squalling children cry out that what their opponents are doing is "tyranny", or "undemocratic" or that it is "bigotry", they protest in the streets against legitimate authority, they even at times invoke violence. The liberals, and proletarists alike, bring discord and division not realising (although perhaps they do but in their arrogance deny it) that they in truth are the tyrants, the autocrats and the bigots who in the very act of proclaiming their "freedom" deny the freedom of everyone else. Thus the liberals protest in Chile, in Czechy Morava, even in Burgundy where the government explicitly guaranteed freedom of religion (their protests are merely being against the Catholic Faith because of what it is), wherever men turn their eyes Godward.

This is so because in truth liberalism, proletarism and all the other manifold errors that like a great flood rose up from secularism against the bulwarks of faith and human dignity are instruments of Satan. Satan seeks division and discord, he seeks the enslavement of men to the tyranny of sin, he seeks to turn mens eyes away from God and onto their own ego's, and ultimately he wants to kill us, every single one of us he wants to kill and see consigned to everlasting oblivion in hell. He roams about as I have said seeking the ruin of souls, and Liberalism and Proletarism are mere tools to this end. Their errors deny the reality of God and seek to make man the sole determinator of what is good in a false humanism altogether divorced from the realities of human nature. These ideologies as such in denying the Lord, ultimately lead to godlessness and the wordliness and depravity of Satan, and thus to tyranny, and temporal and spiritual ruin alike.

Understanding this terrible reality of our times, we must now particularly urge you not to despair but rather to take heart. You must know, the battle is already one, Christ has conquered and in the ultimate calculus the Lord has defeated our ancient adversary. Satan holds no power over you and is powerless against God. He, or rather his agents, may beat you, torture you, belittle you, mock you, even kill you, but in the end you still posess the victory, a victory that is a share of the eternal victory of Christ. Knowing this in your hearts you must go forth with ever more zeal fighting in spiritual war the battle of Our Lord against the enemy in order that at as many souls as possible may be saved. You must fight this day, and every day, the battle of Our Lord, together with the Holy Angels and all the saints in great joy, so that in your countenance men may see the light of God and come to know the true liberty which the Church proclaims and share in the life that awaits the faithful servant of the Lord.

Thus to you Italians, who's government has fallen to the rule of the proletarist heretics and apostates, with greater fervor go forth and preach the universal call to holiness amongst your brethren that they may be organised and united in the purpose of truth, proclaim the liberty of God which the great Pope Paul VI so often preached, and everywhere and always challenge and rebuke the errors of proletarism and liberalism with the truth of God so that the venetians, savoyards, the neapolitans and sicilians, all the nations subject to the state that calls itself Italy, may not fall into darkness but find the light. You Burgundians, with joy and light rebuke and rebut with faith and reason error and deception, show your countrymen the true empty egotism of the liberal and proletarist so that they see manifested the horror of these great apostasies. For they who would deny liberty when it slaps them in the face in the name of their own misguided and ultimately false "freedom" cannot be compromised with even one iota. In all the nations of the world therefore you, the footsoldiers of Christ, must proclaim the gospel of the Lord and in every aspect of your lives and manifest joy and love in Christ our Saviour so that the darkness may be illuminated and these errors banished back to the diabolical mind from which they emerged to tempt mankind. For indeed there is nothing for man in thiis world, and everything in God, and only in God!

Truly we cannot countenance that a single man lies in ignorance of the truth. For out of love of man and God it is our heartfelt desire, the desire of all the faithful, that all men eveywhere may be converted to the Holy Catholic faith. Go forth then, as the army of God in fulfilling this evangelical purpose so that where there is ignorance, there may be wisdom, where there is darkness, light, and where there is questions, answers. Go forth in joy having sacrificed yourselves to God, and gained everything in return so that this joy may resound throughout the world.

My Apostolic Blessings are with you.

~ Pope Pius X
