SGOTM 17 - Plastic Ducks

Great warring
Agree on the maces full-heartedly :)

We need some healers. Technically archery units are the easiest to get promoted (due to free drill) but they are slow and can actually defend, so they kinda suck. We got no chariots, so I guess we need an explorer now.

Mansa has no paper, no golden age, so the scientist is settled. Also if any metal units there would be axes only so, he has no crossbows, so you can use LK for escort. He can't produce metal units either.

Few musing: I wonder if the AIs are picked based on real-world, that has been the case in some of the previous series.
Let say middle ages: we got already ourselves, Mansa the richman #1 looks fine, Sury fits the time, Toku is bit later but still inline. We got Qin slimes the chart.

Geographically it's Europe-through-Asia but w/ western Africa, I guess not enough info to even properly speculate...

For a healer I suggest starting with a XB (easiest) and then we can start working on a Woodsman 3 super healer with a mace (or an upgraded warrior).

Some general notes

Move the Archer from MC to Gao so that the LK is free to move next turn. This LK will join the secondary stack.

Injured XB will stay in KS for garrison for 1 turn.

1 XB goes to the jungle to protect workers for this road. This can be delayed another turn as we don't have a ton of units ready for the secondary stack.
Spoiler :

This means the stack moving to Timbuktu consists of:
4 Trebs, 1XB (medic), 2 LK, 1 Sw, 2 Axes (seems a bit thin but not much we can do)

5 coming Trebs heading to Djenne with secondary stack. Next builds are mostly city takers, I will probably whip MC once more to kick start the secondary stack.

Forges should be started after the next batch of units, we'll have enough firepower to kill MM.
However, 1 settler (BF) will be sent towards the canal city along with a spare LK (SP).

2 workers closest to Gao will be dedicated to improving the city. Others road/chop/irrigate/cottage.

Hopefully MM doesn't have many defenders left.

I'd like to start to prepare a settler + spy + LK now, the forces for Mansa looks enough.

It's important to keep the economy from sinking too much, so start to gather the workers to the new conquered city to chop and make UBs online as fast as possible.

Moreover, we could start whipping forges and maybe some more UBs as well. Of course ~6 galleons should be ready to pick the veterans in the nearest coast in 10 turns.

Moreover, It's better to stop whipping mids city and hire scientists for 5th GP, a GA will help to pop new cities culture border in need. More canal cities might be required.

Ok, I'll finish assembling the secondary stack and then it'll be an economic round.

KS will get 2 chops and 2-pop whip or Rathaus.
Gao might be best to 1-pop whip a granary first and then work on the Rathaus next.

For the Canal City: how about we gift if to an AI?
We get brownie points, the AI develops it and we can re-capture at our leisure without ever paying gpt for it. QSH will almost 100% take it since he already accepts SP.
EDIT: it will still work as a canal city for us although we can't use the culture for a fort... we can probably keep gifting cities this way.

Toku could be better as he is a further target.

Edit: Think about it again, that city is troublesome to take back, AI should have no problem of producing 2+ LBs there. we are saving ~10 gpt for a future trouble. Not sure about gifting it to Mansa, we could take it back before it could produce a defender.

Is it possible to assemble 2 stacks to invade Sury?

Gifting to MM isn't really a solution as it will auto-raze and we'll lose 1 settler.

Toku appears to be too far to accept the city (he will not take any of our cities atm). Sury is also too far at 12 tiles.

So QSH is the only choice. Regarding possible defenders, I agree it's problematic... we would lose a lot of units taking this back.

For Sury, we probably have ~12 turns before we can start warring on him. If the next builds are mainly Forges and Rathaus, then I don't expect we will have a strong secondary stack.

Lake tile plus AI's bonus, the city will grow to size 2 quite fast in AI's hand. Just need a more precise test to find out how many turns is Mansa able to 1 pop whip a LB or maybe he won't if he like CS.

Giving it to Mansa means the city won't be really improved (no workers around). Still it might be ok as long he doesn't feed techs to the rest of the AIs (i.e. trade HBR and Currency to some his stuff). Other than that we can wait for the city to grow before taking it.
The main problem would be open borders w/ Mansa to take benefit of the canal...

15F to grow should be 8 turns while LB for a renaissance era Imm AI is 35H.

So after capturing Djenne, we take a ceasefire (or extortion?) with MM, gift the city and let him hold it for 8 turns. At this point we can capture his other city and finish him off after the city grows to 2 (or raze it if it's a dead end).

Seems pretty complicated to save on 8 turns of upkeep :( (but we could use it with QSH maybe later)

About the canal city, while the idea of benefiting from the canal at no cost is pleasant, gifitng it to Qin really asks for trouble. He's protective, has a decent unit prob, plus the hill bonus, plus he's not even our next target so a lot of time to build units.....

Gifiting to Mansa does seem quite tedious, however can we afford a 10 gpt city with our current economic situation which is going to get even worse with more, farther cities?
Let's see....
The capture of the 2 MM cities should grant us ~250g maybe 300. When those cities get out of revolt + the canal city, we may be losing up to 30g per turn!
We should have enough time to build Rathaus in every city paying more than 5g in maintenance, but will it be enough to compensate? I'll let the more experienced players answer...

MM is finding all the ways into which he can be freaking annoying.
Spoiler :

This delays the march to Timbuktu by 1 turn.

The Chariot isn't much of a problem, SP can complete a LK shortly. How are we going to scare the LB party however?

No promotions. I think LB will stay there while settler will go to Timbuktu. AI often does that.
I'd go for Djenne. We might hit it just before it pops a border and then move across flat terrain where we can't be stopped like this.

I'd go for Djenne first too. Let's hope that our little stack is enough to scare the settler back to Timbuktu.
