hey guys great episode as usally I really like you're show .

Am i the only one who thinxs that there aren't many positif modifiers in civ 5 and to many negatif modifiers? And the positif modifers that are there are difficult to get

It seems everything you do angers the Ai at you and its hard to get them to like you

On the discussion of what the option : "how dare you" response when the Ai ask you if you want to go at war.

If you clicked this buttom you telled the Ai you are never interested in such a arangement wich means they will never aske you again to join a war. iI've seen it happen a lot of times

A question does the decay of modifiers where MadDjinn was talking about scale with game speed so if you play on epic does it increase? or not?

Not a single mention of the Venice-Shoshone leak? I am disappoint.

Given that at least one of the people is in the Frankenstein Test Group, it would be bordering on a break of the NDA for them to have that discussion.

That is one thing that always trips me out over on YouTube, the amount of people that are seriously "offended" by the fact that game companies make money! LOL If they weren't making money, we wouldn't have games

EDIT: also is Iroquois pronounced Ear-uh-Kwah, or is it pronounced Ear-uh-Coy?

I found this to be more the case in vanilla CivV, up-to-and-including the last patch before the Gods & Kings expansion was released last year.

With any civilization in the given game thereafter, not just the one you reacted with such outrage too? That has not been my experience, though yes with respect to the one they asked me about. I only consider this anecdotal evidence, however, having not examined code comments let alone code itself in the game.

With the decay based on game speed, this would include on Epic but not as fast as on say Normal and not as slow as on Marathon.

Phil (TheMeInTeam) did allude vaguely to the rumour. If and when there is official confirmation of the final two to-be-disclosed Brave New World civilizations before the title is released, it will be discussed if time permits (i.e. if done before our last pre-BNW episode is to be recorded on June 29th).

Indeed.

also is Iroquois pronounced Ear-uh-Kwah, or is it pronounced Ear-uh-Coy?
I have almost always pronounced the name as the former from listening to a number of others say it over the years. Dictionary.com agrees with the latter, however.

Ahh I heard it, very close to the end (the talk about city-states), right before the E3 talk

Per wikipedia: The Iroquois (/ˈɪrəkwɔɪ/ or /ˈɪrəkwɑː/) ...
Which I would guess is both since I don't know what the proper pronunciation of IPA symbols is supposed to be.

Mine would be like ear-uh-Koy.

As to why the multiple options; like a lot of other tribe names in North America, the first Europeans to meet them spoke French, and we English speakers took it from the French. It's more likely than not that the original sound would have been in between them, which doesn't exist in North American English.

Exactly.

Former is the "proper" pronunciation for that spelling. Iroquois is the French pronunciation of the word. In French, "quoi" is pronounced 'kwah'. However, for us American English speakers, 'quoi' is pronounced more like "Kwoy" is slurred together as "koy". Though I wish I could listen to the casts right now.

Although it being in the game doesn't necessarily mean it's the correct way to pronounce it, the Dawn of Man speech for Hiawatha pronounces it ir-oh-kwy, with ir being like a short 'ear', and with kwy being like 'why'.

The Dawn of Man speech just tells it was it is in Morgan Sheppard's accent. It's only when the leaders speak that is supposed to be in the native language and accent. (But note that Washington in game sounds more like Clinton and that Elizabeth in game sounds more like Elizabeth the II did in the 1950s.)

Correct.

As to why the multiple options [for pronouncing Iroquois,] like a lot of other tribe names in North America, the first Europeans to meet them spoke French, and we English speakers took it from the French. It's more likely than not that the original sound would have been in between them, which doesn't exist in North American English.
In a similar vein, it is widely accepted that the land that became to be known as "Canada" to Europeans was because a 'lead' translator believed the aboriginals speaking to him and his party were using a near-sounding name to apply to an entire territory when it was in fact only the village they were in.

As with apocalypse105, hope all of you who have contributed to this thread thus far -- and others who may or may not yet :D -- enjoyed the show.

I certainly enjoyed the show! One of the best hours of my every other Saturdays! :)

TBH, I started with 172 "Accept that Amendment", and I came across it here in the BNW forums

First time listener, and I don't know what to say really. It's a good podcast, but compared to others I listen to I found it somewhat lacking in structure. There's no "we're going to talk about this today" and there's many breaks and the talk itself doesn't feel as fluid. A little bit of speed could be useful, maybe.

Also I'm not sure you need to reiterate all the stuff that happened the last two weeks, though the segment on the "at Firaxis studio"-video was done well. I'd say it's important to get a talk out of it that feels natural. See, what I thought didn't work at all was you listening up all the negative modifiers, that just get's repetitive. I'd be much faster reading it up myself (and I can't keep it in my brain for comparison anyways if I just hear it), commentary is much better here than repeating the information. (Same thing with podcasts on books, you don't need to repeat what's in the chapter word for word, I'm reading it as well. Do it rudimentary, then move on). But I did find the thoughts on Diplomacy interesting and it's definately the big place for improvements in later patches / for the next civ game.

But I'd love the discussion on India and America's UA. That was very well done. I'd say that the American UA is underestimated, it can save you a lot of money and you should be using it extensively. What I would have added towards India is that it is primarily a war-focused UA. Happiness is not a thing you usually need desperately in Tall Games, but it is absolutely crucial for conquest. And the fastest way to get a Tall City (= a useful one for India) is to conquer one.

I'm not sure how much I can comment on those UA's though since I only play with the best balance mod on that there is for Civ5. GEM does tweak the tile buying costs (and replaces the late-game bomber UU with a Pioneer Fort Wall replacement that adds growth) which alters the way you play the American's quite a lot. India also got a food bonus instead of a happiness one (and a food-related aquaeduct replacement).

So yeah, good podcast. I've never produced or participated in one so I hope my criticisms aren't too hollow / production issues /etc. ... :)

I think some of these criticisms are well thought out.

I look forward to the show every other week.

Overall, you have great segments. I like it when you guys discuss strategy (since that is what the podcast is supposed to be about anyways :mischief:)...

Like when you debated on opening turn sequence and how civs and maps dictate openings. Very good. :goodjob:

Love the show, Dan.

A small complaint I have had for a while though is that there is a tendency on the show for people to over-qualify what they're about to say. I don't know if that comes from busting each other's chops over little things or what but it sometimes bogs down the discussion before it grows legs. There is also a tendency to get too much into the "it depends" conversation as opposed to discussing the talking point or question that was brought up. Everybody knows the "it depends" factor exists. It can get tiresome to always hear about it. Imagine if a sports commentator said something perfectly reasonable such as "Michael Jordan is a great basketball player" and his co-commentator chimes in with "well that depends!"

The group should let the discussions roll and perhaps you should even moderate the discussion a tad more to make sure everyone gets to share their opinion. I would really like it if you did round table discussions where everyone has a chance to speak. I really like the show though. Essentially what I am saying overall is that I just want to hear what all of the people on the show have to say :)

Just to put in a different perspective, I like the show the way it is! You guys are great!

I also liked the discussion on India and America's UA it gave a good explanation on how India UA works and how to use it properly and it tells me that many a civs UA dont need to be changed at all people just need to understand how the UA's really work and how to use them properly
