DoC - Decadence of Civilizations - Egypt to Terra Incognita

Ah, yet another DoC story to make me jealous of those whose computers get along well with it... Subbed!

Part #7 - No Hellenistic Period for Greece

Spoiler :

Ah Greece. Place of magnificent landscapes and Philosophy didn't expected what was awaiting.
Green-eyed Egypt, nation of rough landscapes and deserts, waited its time to grasp a chance to strike a fatal blow to its peaceful neighbour and unduly spoliate their riches.
The commander in chief planned the attack would start on their iron lode to cut their access of iron and thwart them in building a strong defensive garrison.
It happened that Apollonia was lightly guarded and soldiers took their chance to loot and burn down their first city to show to Greece what Egypt is capable.
Of course, Egypt was highly technological and culture, but also mostly ruthless.
Athens was the city that resisted the most, but nonetheless fell to the superior military edge of Egypt.

The fate of Greece was sealed.

Enkidu's mission was without end. Being half-god, he was immortal and kept loyalty to his Pharaoh. He searched, he searched and he searched. He sought more tribes to crush and glorify him. But nothing happened for a long time. It was cold and unfriendly climate. No surprises he met only pathetic groups of hunter-gatherers. Of course, nothing valuable comes from tiny tribes.

In contrast, Africa was teeming with human settlements to be found. There existed the famous land of Punt where Frankincense and plenty of rare goodies can be found. But this time, the goal of this expedition wasn't the land of Punt, but the mythical land of Yam. According to old records dating back to the 6th Dysnatic of Egypt (the first was the mythical unification of Egypt with Yebu by Menes) by the explorer Harkuf, the land of Yam was rife of riches nowhere to be found in Egypt nor Nubia. This was the land of strongly black people and deneg. But the voyage was rough and teeming with exotic animals who didn't fear the human presence.
Spoiler :

The trip didn't go well.

Imhotep was finally born and ready to benefit to the grandiose empire of Egypt.
imhotep25.jpg
The Prophet boded he had to contribute to the researches of Machinery. Egypt was on the brink of a fantastic discovery in contructing mechanical devices that will outdo any infantry of ancient times. And definitely help in the daily routine of controlling the floods of the Nile. Imhotep gravely pondered the situation and in the weeks that succeeded afterwards, he managed to unknot the current thinkers from their eternal riddles that kept them thwarted from resolving the matter. The breakthrough immensely accelerated the advances.

At the beginning of the season of Prt, a mysterious mechanical device was brought by Imhotep himself. Slowly marching towards the altar where the Pharaoh and the Grand Prophet stood, he knelt while offering the device to the Prophet.

He didn't seem surprised in any sense. He slowly put down the object and cranked the key. Magnificently, the lifeless object moved and took form of an Ibis that walked.
The people was terrorized. They thought it was a bad omen from the Gods and would storm their ire upon them.

Suddenly, the Pharaoh, the One and only one who can make the contact between Gods and the Humans rose his hand in a determined manner.
He said this was the advent of a new era. An era where Egypt will dominate everything and the Gods will bless them of all their magnanimity.

The years that followed was the most active ever and the social organization litterally mutated.

STRATEGIC THOUGHT
The point of having the GEngineer to speed up the discovery of Machinery was simply to allow us to move forward into the Middle Ages...ASAP. While keeping an eye on Greece (they didn't have PriestHood) and then destroy them and forcing Rome to go at war with Pheonicia, now Carthargo, I had no more real contenders to the Oracle and could freely get Feudalism for free. RFC: DoC restricts the oracle and Liberalism in getting a tech from the present era or earlier. You can't get a Middle Ages tech while stuck in Classical Ages. Also, Feudalism cannot be gotten out of a Goody Hut. I know the tech I can get from it through experience and XML files (i.e. the code).

To keep Catharginians at bay, the Pharaoh concluded with JCaesar to start a war against them. He fain agreed. But Egypt was shrewd and made peace with Hannibal swiftly to let the problem to the Romans.

Meanwhile, a succession of peace treaties were contracted with Persia to avoid any military contacts with them for the moment. Egypt had better to do. And avered Persia chose a target already and that couldn't be me because of the peace treaty.

The Medjays still posed a problem. Later, once the troubles were quelled, the squad was enrolled for the battle of Athens.

Following the GEngineer, Djanet, a great pool of thinkers was about to generate its own illustrious personality. But the arrival of Imhotep delayed its moment.

Babilû was a magnificent city.

Given the land of Yam was difficulty of reach, an explorer in the lineage of Harkuf was about to be sent to the landscapes of Panthers.

i'm no expert DoC, but i've learned from regular civ 4 that capitulated vassals are just stupid ai you can't go and conquer!

The AI is weird for Capitulation in DoC, I don't know exactly but you have to wait for a while and waiting is not something you want to do in DoC.

Also, there are times when Greece derps out and leaves only Warriors in their cities. That is what I did, I just parked a few Galleys outside and waited.

Spoiler :
How come capitulation is weird in DoC? I have studied the base vassal system in BTS and I didn't see anything wrong yet with DoC. Except one detail: you are limited in how many vassals you can handle.

Answer: I didn't capitulate him because in my previous shots I discovered a python event from the mod forces him to DoW me and that puts annoying units next to my cities. Basically, a representation of the rise of Hellenism with Alex the Great.

I know that. I saw it too. But I didn't have galleys just in time. Because I focused on techs, mainly Alphabet. Better move to me...globally.

New reader here :). I like the fact you explain your strategy here especially when you make decisions that make me think what?

Why Feudalism instead of Guilds? Do you want to capitulate the WRE?
I think killing Rome stops Byzantium from spawning, so you might want to do that :mischief:

Welcome to teh forums!

We won't eat you or anything, of course.:mischief:

Feudalism is pre-requisite of Guild, so I couldn't get it. And delaying the oracle for another 25 turns was definitely a no-no. Already slightly gambling, but that far it's strong gambling. You'll see why I'm racing in techs.

Yup, Roma will suffer at some point.

The long trek continued for our sturby beasty man. Through the muds he waded, against the cutting and frozen winds he advanced and along the animals he mostly tagged. Only reckless ones didn't pay respect on his animalistic nature.

The quest for the land of Yam was a failure. The peasants that accompanied the War Chariot were rescued and they were greatly starving.
An expert explorer approached and didn't resist in scoffing at their inexperience. He agreed in helping the squad in finding the land of Yam.

Greece has lost its political control and returned to a very primitive state of warring city-states.
Egypt took the opportunity and launched an attack against Byzantion. Sadly, that battle was recorded as Pyrrhic victory.

A terrible event befell on Persia. Sneaky looters succeeding intruding deep in. Erstwhile sumerian city, Shushan, now Shush was sacked and razed!
To show good conscience to our neighbour, the Pharaoh sent elite chariots to crush them.

Of course, the tremendous cultural pressure on Shush was the root of its loss. This, Cyrus didn't seem to catch. :nya:

The Pharaoh of the moment was a woman named Cleopatra. She was in a relationship with the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar. But time eroded their love and anger took place. She plotted revenge and made the first move against the roman empire. Spalatum people paid the price of the leaders' whims.

A scoutish legionaries squad by Byzantion went after the city and won multiple battles. Sadly, the crossbows first actions didn't meet expectations.

While the relationship between the Pharaoh and the Roman Emperor was still strong, Cleopatra did gain particular nepotistic gifts and opportunities. Tarraco was a city of splendors, especially in its silver extraction mines and natural sceneries. On top of that, he just finished a nice monument in her honor. Normally, he wouldn't agree but for his beloved, he was capable to get the moon. Cleopatra naively gave back several papyrus scrolls on the newest and most capable crossbowman, an elite soldier piercing through thickest armors.

Of course, Julius said he won't agree in more city gift. And his word was the law in his lands.

Nevertheless, once the Egypto-Roman war started, there was a real risk that Tarraco would fall into roman hands again. Especially at the second unbelivable failure from the supposed anti-infantry.

STRATEGIC THOUGHT
Did you know that trading cities is doable on RFC: DoC? But not on every condition. The thumb rule is once the city has acquired at least one culture point from any culture building, then the city is disqualified for trade. The monument was fresh and didn't put any culture into the city yet.

Cleopatra was thrilled of getting a city for herself only. Still, the city was pretty countryside and needed improvement. She then commanded and forced emigrations of hundreds of workers to speed up the urbanization of Tarraco. While being ferried towards Tarraco, they made a sail to Athens to reconstruct the iron mine again. Iron would be quite useful for future wars.

After the peace treaty, the war against Roma pleased Hannibal as they were their worst enemy. They agreed in free borders.
But as the roman jerk calling himself emperor said about those Catharginians and their cousin (Phoenicia) a simple saying: "Punica fides!" Never trust punic people, they are shrewd and without a word.

They also completed a huge harbor according to the rumors...

Around the time Hannibal betrayed Egypt, people of the land of Punt was divided in two distincts nations. The kingdom of Axum raised gloriously.

Medjays still posed problems. But they seemed strangely attracted by the south.

Now, a question for the readers! Like find Waldo, there is something that doesn't fit at all in this update. Something wrong that shouldn't happen normally. It's up to you to find it!!!

In the last picture, or the update?

Also, I didn't know that trading cities was possible in DoC.

Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, for this update. No need to make a mega find Waldo, otherwise that's no fun.

With me, it's not gonna be grandiose narration, but you'll recognize my style that revolves 1001 tricks.

I suppose it isn't Catharginians? Seems a bit messed up to be a typo, but I sometimes accidentally switch letters too.

EDIT: Considering the wording of your question, Indians running City States is probably more likely.

They are right, too - it's the single best civic in this game!
