AI tournament: Season 3

Its your chance of a lifetime now, Mr. Tokugawa!! Use it! Capitulate India and rock n' roll the map!! Btw, I'm surprised to see Ragnar struggling there so much.. What the heck is he actually doing? Great work, kossin! Just one note: I'd like to see the power graph :)!

Mansa may look a little better than Mehmed now, but Mehmed has the highest unit prob in the game (along with Rags, Shaka and Nappy), so once he gets going he should out-power Mansa. And Mansa simply often falls into wonder-whoring/culture/teching mode. The key question is will Mehmed and Mansa because friends or enemies in the short-term. Either way I see Mansa becoming a vassal of Mehmed, unless Rags pick it up later, or steals it away. I see the winner coming from this partnership, or a darkhorse Wash.

Power graph is the demographics dump - last screenshot.

Oops...:D! How did I miss that? Umm.. Anyways, the graph says now that MM is horribly behind in power... When Mehmed has catapults he should attack him and MM would be eliminated. And why you didn't considered Cyrus to be a possible winner candidate? He could attack Mansa too. Waiting to see who will get Malinese lands.

Group A Game 1 - 1AD

First my apologies, I overwrote the autosaves from 2000BC to 1AD but had made a manual save at 1AD which is where I had stopped the simulation yesterday. I've made backups until the end of the simulation so history should be in the books for the future!

The doings of each individual AI, 1AD.

Gandhi - as anticipated, the Buddhist shrine was built. Not super early (I've seen Egypt get its shrine around turn 50 !) considering all the wonders here but enough to have huge repercussions on the world. An ongoing war with fellow Buddhist Tokugawa is to be expected... but with advantage Gandhi !

Ragnar - much expansion since last time but poor city development overall leaves him backwards. It might have something to do with fighting the only other Hinduist though. Some good city spots are left, notably the double seafood area.

Mansa Musa - a skirmish with Cyrus lost him a marginal city - Mansa is not out of the woods being alienated by his religion against the world. Cyrus is keeping a tight grip on Mansa by still expanding in his direction. Mansa really expanded well. To be fair, he is one of the better AIs as you can see from his teching, power ratios and land grab. Unfortunately, he tends to get screwed by his peaceweight and religion RNGs. Gao is a sad sad city compared to what it would be in human hands.

Tokugawa - the surprise here is that Gandhi was the one to DoW Tokugawa! I guess it's understandable when you have War Elephants to fight against non-Longbows. In a rare moment of wonder building, Toku grabbed the Pyramids to help him - not research - build more units. Being really stretched is not very good. Of course he missed out on the double gold site.

Cyrus - doing very well. Nice tech rate, a lot of good cities and more incoming. Can anything materialize out of this? One lone city from Mansa won't do.

Mehmed - went in for a skirmish with Mansa but nothing came out of it... now planning to attack his religious leader Gandhi from Bursa... the empire could look better but while building units it's difficult to do everything I guess.

Washington - playing at Mansa Musa. Seriously, he is very close to Liberalism already. GLH was a smart choice but he is very light on units... hopefully he can stay out of wars while grabbing a tech lead. While Washington managed to grab the golds, having food to work them is another story.

What now? Is Gandhi able to beat down on Toku while protecting his back?
Washington is really researching well...
Cyrus isn't doing too bad either.
Mehmed looks as good as in the demo game. Repeat performance?
Toku disappointing and Ragnar not getting the job done against Mansa...

Interesting! This game is still up for grabs.

Some small observations (most allready noted by kossin):
Toku/Kyoto has built a cottage on a GH and are working no specialists despite having the Mids.
Mansa/Gao has farms on all those beautiful FPs and is working none of the two goldmines.
Mehmed/South has got a fort on his horses
Wash/Atlanta is building chicken pizza in 27turns

Interesting that Mansa is building units in 6 of 10 cities, Gandhi in 7 of 9 cities and Washington in 1 of 10...

Toku... (what was I expecting lol)

Very interesting that Gandhi declared, it might be his saving grace.

Mansa is doing well but is really isolated and surrounded.

I'm pretty sure Washington will eventually get DoW'd by someone and lose his edge but what do I know...

Pretty balanced game!

wash puts some exceptional play here! Ideally he should Dogpile on Toku...

will be interesting how the mehmed, mansa situation turns out...

overall there is a lot of strong AI's here... so much potential, all is in the air still...

Gao was a true tragedy compared to what it should have been. Not even working one gold? Christ...

When you get further into the game, could you check out the maintenance of a big city which in human hands would have severe maintenance costs? I wonder what the numbers are for the AIs.

Hard to tell who will win this, and this setup may lend itself more to peaceful/diplomatic wins, which makes me lean towards Gandhi or possibly Mansa. Ragnar has disappointed, but it will be interesting to see how Mehmed does as the game progresses to more warfare. Will he gobble up Mansa?

Well Toku has 2 kinds of games: the ones where he sucks from the start and the ones where he sucks after being outteched.

I'm secretly glad to see "my" champion doing a lot better than expected. He's also acting pretty untypically though, as is Washington. You sure you're not using random personalities or so? :-p

Could we see a diplo glance screen next round?

Mansa Musa as the most powerful one is a scary thought though, but his religious situation is indeed tricky.

if i were to play the seat of one AI, i'd play as wash at this time. so mutch potential (attack toku, win lib for cuirasseres...)
Unfortunately, wash will not win, I think it will be between gandhi and mansa

Seeing how poor is Ragnar may be not to do balance by hands?) I mean let's try to see what happens next time when some AI has a lot of land. If such AI wins several times in row then indeed - many thing depends on starting position and it's better to do an additional balance.

8FPs and 2 gold mines with FIN trait and the AI is working 7 farmed FPs, 1 unimproved FP, wine, and running 4 specialists. An engineer over 2H, 9C riverside gold? And he already has a Jewish shrine which leads me to assume he has the Hindu shrine as well, so what's the purpose of all the priests? Craziness.

I just noticed Ragnar had a serious lack of metal, could that have neutered him? And then he put Sigtuna on the grass copper hill when he already had iron? Baffling.

I can't believe Washington let Gandhi steal the pig and clam from him, should've put Chicago 1 SE.

Now, how fair would it be if Ragnar currently had ~15 cities to everyone else's 10?
Ok maybe ~14 instead as he could have lost some in the east but that's still dwarfing others.

Metals placement was likely the bigger problem for him but it all comes as a result of his very bad first 50 turns.

The AI's affinity for building Moai statues in the first 50 turns has to be one of the most crippling disabilities in the game, especially when it's in the capitol. Not as bad as the refusal to chop forests, but sheesh. Lizzy did the same thing in one of Ray Patterson's later simulations and it resulted in her squandering a large amount of land and becoming boxed in with 5 cities.

I'm actually surprised Gandhi fared as well as he did here despite the blunder. Perhaps the fact that it was his 2nd city and he already had a 4th settler out softened the blow.

I was wrong about Toku too.. He almost got beaten up by Gandhi. Gandhi is getting owed though, when Mehmed strikes.. Let's see what happens.

Moai is a weird one. I almost always see an AI build it in the early BCs. They'll easily make back the hammers of course, but it puts them back considerably in the early game, which as we all know is the most important phase.

Gandhi could be safe for a bit. Ragnar and Cyrus out of wars or having already started war. The big threat could be Mehmed later on but the shared religion could aid him. I can't see Washington attacking him.

Mehmed is in war mode. Probably Mansa is my guess. Units heading Madras way too. See what happens I guess.
