AI tournament: Season 3

60% cost for the AI on BTS Deity Ancient Era. Needs less food to grow as well and more details of that kind.

Really?!...And what about Vanilla and Warlords then? I always thougth that it's 80%/60%/80%...I remembered something wrong... Is any place where it's possible to find the information on the difficulty levels? I cannot find it on the main page...

Thank you! That explains a lot (I messed growth and train, but things are more complicated). Just wonder why Vanilla in this case is considered as easier than Warlords?..

Napoleon should go war mode straight in the beginning. If he can rush Pacal, he is my favourite to win. Pacal could be OK if he survives from that. Maybe wins Cultural Victory then.

Pacal, Pericles, Victoria, AIs I really like and would like to see in top3. Anyway, all these 3 would be winnerts if they start in Suleiman's position. I am curious if Suleiman will leverage his best starting land.

So the AI starts with 4 archers, yet all of them build an archer first??

This is tough as the traditionally strongest AIs don't have the best starting positions. If I had to pick I would pick Pacal for culture. If he fails, this could even get to the point where Darius wins space. Have we seen any such victories in AI tournaments yet?

Free hammers on first turn.

Didn't know they cheated with that too. Quite absurd how many advantages the AI have on the higher levels. The step from immortal to deity seems gigantic.

Looks like most capitals are a bit wonky, with not great food. Quite like Victoria's capital though, which is prime cottage land. Darius has an odd one. Okay food really, but apparently camped in the Himalaya.

Tough to pick a favourite because a lot depends on the early game and how well they expand, and then whether somebody gets on a steamroll or if the game goes more in the direction of culture or space. Think I'll pin my hopes on Victoria though. If she can leverage that cottage land with her financial trait, she could get ahead in tech, and hopefully use that towards a victory condition. Unfortunately her surroundings is a bit crap.

Pacal has a really nice spot too, with elephants in BFC and gold and marble nearby. If he stays out of war, he may get a cultural win. He's an AI that can become very strong if he survives the early game.

The evidence so far seems to suggest that peacemongers have the edge in these all-AI games. We've already seen Pacal and Gandhi repeatedly do well. Maya are very strong favourite for me in this one, just based on form.

Love these threads btw :goodjob: I think it's useful AI study actually - something like this would make for a really neat college dissertation

I will run this save too - definitely a good idea there to try and smooth out for RNG effects.

Hmm, what would really be cool is if the game engine was be modded to auto-run the same map with shuffled starts a few times! 5040 iterations (I think :crazyeye:) would be required to cover all combos on a 7 team map, but prob 20 or 30 would be enough if chosen carefully. I.e. give each AI 3 or 4 tries in each start position with a range of different neighbours. That could be run overnight then, and the winner would be the AI who won the map most times out of those runs :D

You have to assume Firaxis did some of this kind of stuff during development. Perhaps we should also test Soren's claim that "a PHI/IND AI repeatedly ran away in test games" or whatever exactly he said!!! :hmm: Hmm, what is coming through most strongly so far in these games is that the AI XML characteristics seem to be much more of a factor than just the traits, so I think that quote's probably crap :)

Victoria's start is looking good but I have a strong feeling it will be decided by the outcome of Pacal and Napoleons first war.

Worst start goes to Persia by the look of it

Here's hoping for some red coats. If English actually decide to lay some cottages that could be sweet. Very few hammers for imperial trait but lots of rivers/floodplains.

Vicky will have a monster of a cottage cap... Darius will wonder whore I think, his cap has a LOT of production...

Hmm, I'm giving my love to the Corsican dude. If he manages to get Pacal he should be in good shape.

Would it be a good idea to start a new thread for each new game in the series? It would make it easier to see where each game starts

In the first page of page 1 kossin has included links to the various games, so you can just check there if in doubt. Think a new thread for each game could get messy.

Group B Game 1 - Turn 50

The doings of each individual AI, 2000BC.

Pacal - Barbarian troubles and only 1 worker gives this very shady overview. 2 corns are not farmed, so few tiles improved but Stonehenge can help cities to come. The gold tile is very very sad. (forgot to switch resources on for second screenshot - apologies)

Charlemagne - typical Charley start, a lot of settlers and Buddhism. If he can spread religion to Suleiman and buddy up, he might be in a good position to beat on the weaker neighbours.

Pericles - in contrast to Pacal, this is looking much better. Too many floodplains are farmed for his own good but being Philosophical... maybe he'll make something out of it?

Victoria - now that's using Financial well! About double the techrate of everyone else despite no commerce special. The big downside is only 3 cities and no settler in production. If she waits too long, she'll get boxed in - it doesn't help that a barb city spawned in her settling area.
Spoiler :

Darius - impressive expansion from Darius! If only the gold site was chosen better :( A nice little hill to fend off aggression, you know? Leaving the back lands for later is great.

Napoleon - Lyons is a disaster. So is attempting Stonehenge when you're on a peninsula and so close to your neighbour. Development is very weak compared to other AIs (is it the forest syndrome, again?).

Suleiman - decent expansion for Imperialistic leader but not inspiring. Some weird barb troubles. It's nice to see the AI use the whip... but not on barracks this early :crazyeye: The walls are also mind-boggling.

Various demographics - a few nemesis couples are forming already.

Land overview: quite some land to expand into... if Victoria wises up she can grab a lot more cities... if not, expect a monster out of either Suleiman or Charlemagne. Napoleon needs to bash on someone or be contempt to be stuck in his little corner. Bad bad expansion.

What is AI thinking with all those roads? Peri roads like 6 tiles to get to the horse when one was enough, and Nappy has all those roads in mass forest. Charley's position looks nice. Vicky looks boxed in already, at least she has the Great Wall shielding her from those barbarians.
