these are all taken out of the wider context. how do i know that by including the wider context, the meaning would still be the same? disregarded. i would expect better of the Pope than to just quote sentences without context of the sentence before, or after, or even the whole paragraph.

With numerous powers across the continent arrayed to support one side or the other, open war would be devastating for South America.

The Ottoman Empire has demonstrated its usual religious pragmatism by swearing to protect the Orthodox Patriarch of Cyprus in exchange for a regular fee. The Catholic West has condemned the move, much like how Catholic France’s alliance with the Turks in the past caused much uproar. Such an uproar is not entirely unjustified for non-religious reasons, as well: the Turks have become the world’s largest economy.

The Reformation’s tensions had been simmering for some time, but they have finally begun to boil over. The Papal States has spearheaded an effort to unite the Catholic powers of Europe, having either gained the fealty or alliance of Aragon, Sicily, Venice, Austria, Bosnia, and Bavaria. With less-than-flattering remarks about Calvinists, Lutherans, and Dauphinois Christians, the Palatinate has spearheaded an effort to ensure peace among non-Catholic factions in Europe to great success, though it may be some time before any formal alliances are made in the north. With Catholics reigning over Scotland and Ireland, it is clear that any religious war in Europe would be widespread.
