1884-1888: Brave New World
Lady Lockwood, after winning a historic victory as the first elected woman leader in world history, also gave one of the most historic inaugural speeches: on the first radio broadcast. Her voice was heard around the world, as those who believed in equal rights and social mobility cheered.
The Empire State Building, the tallest tower in the world, was finished in New York City. Lady Lockwood unveiled the tower and cut the ribbons herself.
Upon taking office, American stability had begun to recover. After a -41, collapsing stability for several years, the stability rating had risen to -25 and unstable. (The game shows -25 as collapsing, but it is a bug. Everything else shows it as unstable. Furthermore, the razed city penalty has not gone away? It's been decades! )
Lockwood oversaw the reconstruction of France, in which France quickly recovered, colonizing some Pacific islands as well as Africa.
In January 1887, Lockwood ordered the landing of American troops in the Sahara. The long trip to Mali would begin; the original plan was to come up from West Africa, but British forces had blockaded the beaches to prevent American intervention in Africa.
During this time, American forces had captures southern Italy, which had fallen to Catholic fanatics. The city was returned to the democratic Italian government, with many thanks.
Troops then landed in northern Vietnam, a region of Thailand. The army was received with large festivals and crowds of applauding Vietnamese. These American troops were then given orders to go through China, up the steep Himalayan hills, and into Tibet to reconstruct the region.
Meanwhile back at home, Nez Perce Natives had an uprising in southern Canada. American forces scrambled to defend cities. After the narrow victory from limited forces, two infantry divisions were permanently stationed in Sioux Falls.
The following few months had American troops from South African territories take the central Congo region. Lockwood had planned for the region to be given independence to the Congolese people, but the Belgians opposed this motion. The city of Bukayu would be annexed as a territory.
American marines, a new innovation in amphibious warfare modeled after Blaine-era tactics, stormed Puerto Rico and Haiti. Puerto Rico was annexed as an American territory, and Haiti was given to France in order to strain relations between France and Britain.
Tibet was then annexed by new American tank divisions reinforced by airships. The Thai government opposed Tibet's independence, as they stated that they want the region to be annexed in case of British, Russian, or Chinese attacks on Thailand. Lady Lockwood respected their view, and Tibet was made an American, landlocked territory in opposition to China's demands.
Nearing the end of her first term, the first airplane was flown in the American Midwest. The world watched in amazement as human's desire to fly was finally achieved. Lockwood spent a large amount of state funds converting many airships to airplanes the upcoming months. However, during her first term no airplane was used in military.
Following this, the first submarine was developed in New York City, with Lady Lockwood again blessing the ship on its voyage outside the city. Lockwood had intentions to use the submarine to scout northern Russian waters, as Russia's democratic nation had begun collapsing.
At the very end of her term, Lockwood witnessed the reconstruction of Mali, in which Mali was given modern technology in exchange for an American-style political system.
The campaign for 1888 began developing a dark undertone. Russia, which had warred America for nearly two decades in the fight for communism, had once again developed a communist government. The democratic Russian government had collapsed after English diplomats funded rebels.
A world of new technology, new friendships, and new dangers...
