Election of 1916: A Quiet, Calm State of Affairs
After serving three terms, Eugene V. Debs has stated he has not wished to run for a fourth term. Wishing to return to his home state, he has added that should conditions call for it, he is not opposed to making a political comeback in the 1920 election.
Socialist Party
Allan L. Benson, Age 45, American newspaper editor and author. Highly opposed to militarism, wishing to avoid war or military conflicts if at all possible. Wishes to establish declarations of war as a national referendum, making it so each declaration of war must be won by majority popular vote. Anyone who vote in favor of the war would then be selected for draft eligibility, although this would include removing the private ballot of American voting, where Benson adds that this would reduce voter fraud. Benson declares that prestige and respect will save the Socialist Party during Debs' temporary withdrawal.
James H. Maurer, Age 52, Pennsylvania Representative and Trade Unionist. Highly opposed to war, but not against military defense and small military operations that can be used to avoid larger world conflicts. Does not believe any event thus far calls for the need of a military intervention, and he plans to continues Debs' policies.
Progressive Party
Albert B. Cummins, Age 66, Iowa Senator and Governor. The leader of the progressive movement that broke away from the Republican Party, he supports environmentalism and socialism. He differs with the Socialist Party, however, by opposing the United Nations and supporting military interventions. He wants to increase the American army, stationing at least one army in each major city and expanding international military bases, and station army near Germany should they "cross the line".
Charles Evans Hughes, Age 54, New York Governor and Supreme Court Justice. A professor during the 1890's, he claims to be highly influenced by British Liberalism. He supports the socialist programs enacted by the Socialist Party, but states that its leadership without Debs' will lack backbone, initiative, experience, and integrity. Furthermore, he fears that environmentalism is damaging the American economy and the citizens' right to a free market, and wishes to take away many of its environmental laws. He wishes to continue scientific research, territorial improvements, and strengthen espionage and military presence.
Democratic Party
Woodrow Wilson, Age 59, President of Princeton University and New Jersey Governor. Afraid of radicalism of the Socialist movement, we wishes to enforce the constitution to prevent candidates from running who intent to create a state economy or become autocratic. He believes in a world democracy and wants to maintain good diplomacy, but also wants to extend American imperialism as the American stability improves. His plans are to rebuild Spain and war against Germany as they are increasingly imperialist; having captured Paris and Moscow, and made Poland a client state. He worries that another world war will break out if interventionist policies are not taken.
Republican Party
Elihu Root, Age 70, Secretary of War, Secretary of State, and New York Senator. Supports "paternalistic" imperialism; he supports the acquiring of vassals and strengthening them by supporting their infrastructure and improving their science institutes. Seeing the political system of America bleakly, he has doubts in democracy. Wants to strengthen the American Reserve, aiming to station each major city with an army, thus increasing the amount of troops available for airlift, and decreasing unruliness during riots. Annoyed by Germany's military actions into France and Russia, and wishes to install sanctions against them.
Socialist Labor Party
Arthur E. Reimer, Age 35, Political Activist and Lawyer. States that the Socialist Party is weak and unorganized. States they are opportunist, and not sincere nor bold. As the economy flourishes, even socialist programs are beginning to fail the poor. Being influenced by Russian political scientists, he leads the communist movement -- stating that as the heirs to the socialist movement, communism will once and for all end the social caste wars and establish an equal, egalitarian worker's paradise.
Campaign News:
The race is still on, with 3-6 more votes expected! Communism has made a huge impact on the race, claiming to be the true successors of the Socialist movement legacy. The opposition to this movement is divided between Socialists and Democrats; if they were united, the opposition would match the communist movement! The Progressive and Republican Parties both fail during this campaign, with the Republican Party disbanding after years of defeat and the fall of American conservative capitalism. If the communist opposition decides on a frontrunner, they may have a chance. Likewise, the communists may solidify their victory by gaining the undecided voters.

Wilson wins campaign! Woodrow Wilson becomes 21st president of the United States!
After a vicious race, the Democrats win their first election as a united party since 1852! Wilson, gaining support from Socialists who feared the communist branch breaking off with the party, garnered 55% of the vote! The Socialist Labor Party was condemned by the Democratic Party for committing voter fraud as well. This election will go down in history as the closest, most interesting and competitive campaign in American history! With this victory for the Democrats, the administration has taken two steps away from socialist, as opposed to a step towards communism. The revival in capitalism has brought many former Republicans back to the political arena, attempting to reform a party that'll further reduce the Socialists' impact.
Woodrow Wilson, upon his inauguration, gave a speech to ban the communist, autocratic movements. Known as the Phrasemaker, as a former professor, he had no need for a hired writer to write his speeches as he was already eloquent. Within his first months in office, he passed a bill that outlawed voting for radical communism or fascism. How will this affect his popularity with the left? Only time will tell.
Ballot:
Socialist Party 2 (10%)
•Benson 2
Democratic Party 11 (55%)
•Wilson 11
Socialist Labor Party 7 (35%)
•Reimer 7
(PS, three Socialist Labor voters were not counted as they were obviously accounts made just for this election to cheat. Regardless, this would not have changed the outcome.)
