Life on Earth is at the ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of.
With the resigning of President Harriman, the United States effectively dissolved. In its ruins arose five prominent nations and three international campaigns:
• The Confederation of Kaskaskia, forming out of the powerhouse of Chicago and quickly expanding to the Great Plains and the Ohio valley. The amount of weapons it produced and the population it harnessed gave it prominence as the most likely to inherit the former United States. However, blocking the other nations from Japan and parts of Mexico, the Confederation mostly focused on expanding westward.
• The Dixie States (or officially, the Confederate States of America), which formed out of the influence and recognition of former secessionists. The nation was dirt poor, and became a near military state in order to protect itself against Mexico. Alcohol and tobacco were its chief exports.
• New England (or officially, the United Socialist States of America), forming out of Communist Revolution politicians and a generally socialist majority. This nation did not manage to capture New York City -- it did however have everything north of that city. With a strong fishing industry and old money, the nation was relatively peaceful and neutral in world relations. Out of all the post-American nations, it was the most free.
• The United States of South Africa. The most stable during the post-American transition, the area continued on life just as they did during both secession, and the joining of the Commonwealth of Nations. Racism quickly grew, however, as the bigoted South African population gained independence from the North American legislative system.
• New Rome; a Trotskyist utopia comprising of Fourth International Communists. Taking large funds from both the former United Front and parts of the United States, the movement quickly took control of the collapsing Turkish Republic and carved out its own empire. The nation quickly clashed with Germany and Russia, and became the center of the world's proxy wars.
• The Sicilian Commune. Founded from less violent communists within the Fourth International, the quiet island of Sicily became the center of the government. Although it would slightly expand into Italy as it collapsed, it stayed very peaceful -- similar to Switzerland.
• The Pahlavi Republic. Funded by a branch of the collapsing American military, the movement overthrew large parts of collapsing Persia and installed a very libertarian, free democracy.
• and finally, the Lemnitzer Regime (or officially, the United States of America). The true heirs to the American legacy, and in control of Washington and New York City, the regime carried on the Harriman presidency and was both wealthy and powerful. Although more focused on internationalism, intimidation, and military, the Lemnitzer Regime carried just as much influence and responsibility as the former USA.
The Rise of the Lemnitzer Regime
Walking into the White House, walking into the Oval Office, General Lemnitzer televised to the nation (within his influence) his inheritance of the nation and his declaration that his leadership will protect the USA. Lemnitzer took power in the most unstable time period in world history. The USSR was both invading Iran, German, and Greater Japan while using nuclear weapons to both wipe out concentrations of military soldiers and intimidate foreign powers. Other world nations were quickly developing their own nuclear weapons to counter this, and the United Nations was disbanded after threats from several generals.
After anarchy, after protesting and rioting, the world looked onward as a pivotal moment in our species' history took place: the first move in the nuclear war. Before there were skirmishes, and there was indeed a nuclear bomb dropped in Lithuania, but did this threaten the -world-? With all eyes on Russia, with all eyes on Japan and Germany, with all eyes in the Lemnitzer Regime, the leaders of all nations met in Copenhagen, Germany to discuss possible ends to the chaos. Demands were thrown out, and the demands are outrageous. Russia demanded nearly half of Germany's land and most of Asia, Japan demanded a surrender of Russia and sanctions on Germany, Germany demanded an end to all wars against them and large parts of the Middle East for oil, and the Lemnitzer Regime wanted an international, legitimate claim to the former boundaries of the United States and help from Britain to achieve this. The conference ended with glasses being thrown, fights breaking out outside the building, and the German police barging in to restore order and return the world leaders to their planes.
With generals outing politicians, the government now accurately represented the mindset of the United States' people. With streets on fire, with buildings collapsing, society DEMANDED that nuclear war start! Too long have the people go on with the intimidation of the USSR and these silly demands of peace negotiations and universal cooperation. Meeting in Washington, representatives of the former United States (such as New England and Kaskaskia) sat at a large, open table to discuss the world's course of events.
Kaskaskia: We have the nuclear arsenal capability to compete with the USSR! It is time we take the advantage of first strike and gain the world's appreciation for ending the threat.
New England: Don't be ridiculous! None can win from nuclear war!
Dixie States: No! Kaskaskia has a point right there... that they do... first strike we gotta take. Man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.
General Lemnitzer: People! Please! The first step to our victory is disabling their nuclear weapons. We cannot risk losing so many lives in this gamble.
Doctor Strangelove: Generals, presidents, if you please... I have an idea. A doomsday device. Using the latest in technology, we can set up a robotic, computer system that will automatically shoot ICBM's at the USSR and their allies if a nuclear attack on America is detected. The machine cannot be de-activated, and should definately intimidate the USSR into terms of surrender.
General Lemnitzer: Sounds brilliant.
Dixie States: Sounds expensive.
All: -shush-
General Lemnitzer: Very well Dr. Stormbladder (Assistant: Strangelove) Strangelove, we will install this immediately.
Doctor Strangelove: I'm glad you agree General Lemnitzer, because with time running out, I have already installed this. In fact, I have good reason to believe that we will use this device within the next few hou-... MEIN GENERAL, I CAN WALK!
And So It Begins
So here we stand at the end of the road. Looking onwards, we either see total annihilation, or the never ending pursuit of reconstruction. Will humanity survive? Will it flourish one day? Will it join the ranks of dinosaurs and the endless list of species made extinct from our meddling? Will we find redemption?
A representative from The USOSA (United States of South Africa) has stated at a large speech in Cape Town (the USOSA's capitol) that the previous prime minister of South Africa, Daniel Malan, has been assassinated on his way home from anti-apartheid protesters in Durham. There was a moment of silence from the crowd, and the representative spoke up.
"Citizens of South Africa, we are here today to reveal the new prime minister of South Africa. This man promises to keep life as normal and well as it can be during this time, and wishes to train our military in case of an invasion."
The citizens were quiet as a man in a pinstripe suit walked out in front of the crowd. His name was Hendrik Verwoerd.
"People of South Africa, as the new prime minister of these States, I will protect each and every one of you from disaster, and I vow to keep this nation protected! In order to unite the South Africa in these nations, I am officially ordering an invasion on the area of South Africa that belongs to the Commenwealth.
As long as Churchill gives this area to us, we will let them make peace. We do not want Madagascar, only their hold on our rightful land and citizens. We will have peace, order, happiness, and life."
As the speech ended, Hendrik was sent to a large military planning base with the top officials of the South African military.
There has been no released info of Hendrik's stance on the apartheid, but it has been stated that he was the one who thought of the whole entire policy in the first place, using Malan as his puppet.
Well i'm glad i'm on an island with a spaceship. I will carry the collected knowledge of humanity into space, and settle on the moon. I carry myself and my wife, and from us humanity will flourish once again on the moon. Using the collected knowledge of humanity, we go into the stars and beyond.
We carry with us all recorded languages.
We carry with us the histories of our world, so that we might not repeat the mistakes we have made
We carry with us the accumulated scientific and technical knowledge, so that we might survive
We carry with us the texts of the great religions, so that their legacy might be preserved
We carry the artistic achievements of humanity, the writings, poetry and paintings that represent the emotions of humanity
This we carry into the stars
Hey if you can have countries i can have a spaceship and a computer ;P
Luna stared out into the distance as the Council of Utopia convened for the first democratic election since Moai's ascension to leader of the 4th International. She feared that WWIII was soon to unfold, and she needed a successor before she departed. "Why should i trust you again" an old friend of Moai asked. "Because" Luna responded tearfully "If you don't then She will kill me" The man nodded and weakly said "the apple never falls far from the tree, does it?" Luna sighed and waited for the announcement. Within minutes, a large speaker proclaimed "And the New Empress is... Trixie Lulamoon" "I still can't believe the scientists aged her so fast",The man proclaimed, " For a 3 day old they've done a job that is a century of genetic science away."
"You're telling me, Doctor."
"Are you ready to go?"
"Yes"
Luna looked up at her empire one more time, in the heart of the world's desire, before flying away, far from earth's troubles, With a Lord of Time.
As his machine faded out of reality, Trixie ran into Luna's Quarters with a gun, gasped once, and shot the dematerializing starship. The bullet flew in and hit Luna just under the heart. Any higher and the Doctor could not have saved her. She would always carry a scar however, the only thing to remind her that she had once Been cruel, had once took on the world, and had once thought the only thing in the world, was power.
*This completely impossible scenario has no effect on the game other than a changed Luna being allowed to live, instead of dying to her sucessor, which is way worse than Luna could ever be
