The year 1204AD was peaceful. Despite rumours about an agressive nomadic horde in the east, everything seemed fine.
The royal council gave Lomonosov permission to build an institute in Moskva. Academia Lomonosova was one of the first educational institutes to be built in Europe.
Caricynian cavalry conquered Kazan destroying the Khaganate of Kazan completely. French has sent a vast army to destroy it, but Muscovians managed to conquer it first.
Abasid Caliphate discovered us. Noone was really happy about this.
Invading hordes:
Genkhis Khan, the warlord that spawns terror in west and east invaded Muscovy in 1231AD! The decissions of royal council about our defences were useless. Now, the grand Duchy can rely solely on the army that already had.
The most dangerous horde was that near Kazan. Kazanians forgot completely revolting against Muscovian control and cried for help. They recognised Ivan and his nobility as the legitimate ruler of Kazan. They converted to orthodoxy, hoping that God will have mercy on them. Rumors about destroyed cities and extended depopulation of Eurasia spread terror in the subdefended city.
It seems mongol hordes sneaked through the northern forests and tried to surprise us. Fortunately, Uglish had a respectable army and Uglishians were able to defend themselves.
Caricyn had an army, but it was clear it needed more. Hills, proximity to other cities and the route network would save Caricyn from Mongols. However, Caricyn might faced two hordes, the Kazanian horde could march easily to Caricyn.
Mongols declared war to our brothers, Byzantium. However, Byzantium was stronger, so this horde might go against Kiev instead.
Battle of Uglish:
Uglishian defenders managed to weaken the horde early. The surprise was a failure and this horde retreated. However, isolated from other hordes it became an easy target of Uglishian cavalry. Ivan ordered Uglish to send half of its Cavalry to the south, he estimated a small cavalry force was enought to counter the situation in the North.
Battle of Kazan:
Our generals had sad news for us. It was dangerous to split our army in two to keep both Kazan and Caricyn. Ivan ordered the troopes in Kazan to retreat, hoping that we will conquer it later.
After Kazan's conquest Mongols wanted to sign a peace treaty. However, Ivan promised Kazanians to liberate them, so he refused, even if this meant that the war would last many years in the future.
Ivan kept his promise. The hordes retreated for a while giving Ivan the opportunity to reconquer Kazan. Mongols didn't threatened Kazan again.
Protecting Caricyn:
Ivan decided to keep Caricyn off Mongols and in order. He sent all the troops of Moskva to Caricyn. It seems this movement frightened the Caricynian horde, that retreated.
A small part of former Kazan's horde got lost. It decided to commit suicide by invading Caricyn during winter.
Battle of Kiev:
Byzantine hordes decided to move towards Kiev instead. Thanks to Matthias policy to build an army Kiev was well-defended. However, Kievans were still afraid. Ivan send some cavalry from Caricyn to calm them down.
The following years Mongols tried to establish a nomadic polity in the south. This polity known as the "golden hord" had two administrative centers, one "Sarai Batu" in caspian sea and one other in the northwest of black sea.
Meanwhile, Grand Duchy of Muscovy reached a population of one million souls, proving its ability to defend its population against external threats.
Finally, the kievan horde decided to attack. However, Kiev was stronger and the morale of the soldiers high. The army in Kiev destroyed the horde completely. Mongols never threatened again Kiev.
Aftermath:
Mongols retreated completely in 1246AD. Although this wasn't the formal end of the war, the duchy proved to be strong enough to defend itsself. Our generals elected Alexander Nevsky, as the hero of this war. He fought the most battles against Mongols and won. Moreover, his advice was something more than valuable.
The grand Duchy was strong, but these wars weakened its economy. European powers other than our ally, Byzantium thrived. The duchy was at last able to develop, and it should do it fast to compete its rivals.
