Against All Odds: The Struggles of the Noyyau

I think we should just own our cities for the time being. We can let Noyyau split the area so it's fair. We also need to leave space for new people.

I demand my city not be used to further your war efforts. I want Robertia to take no part in these wars.

OOC: I think just a map would be nice in general :p

Hey now, Robertia is THE military city! You can't strike just like that! (Not yet...)

Anyway, give me time to write one last update, and we'll finally get to where you can make really important choices!

So, did I get this right:
Noyyau is the Royal capital
House Caterpillar is influent in Robertia
House Greek is influent in Ringhio (and nearby Evron, I suppose), though wants to war with the Spanish (on the opposite side of the Kingdom!)
House Spirictum has a presence pretty much everywhere, though its main presence in Noyyau
House Florentianus hails from the Robertian countryside, but their main Fermentation facilities are in Noyyau (that's where the National Brewery is. I could make another one later, we can have a total of 3)

Interim map, just to give you an idea. The Malagasi are to the immediate west of Ringhio, though it's not in this map. Blue text are river names.
Spoiler :

OOC: ergh that is a horrible image (mine, not Noyyau's)

IC: The West is the Best!

OOC: Consider this happened before the start of the siege of Tehran.

Michele had just woken up in the fortress where him and Federico passed the night. Federico was already having breakfast with the garrison.
"Good morning Federico! What's for breakfast?
"Beans..."
"Perfect..."
"Don't you know the more the food is bad, the more the army is strong?"
"Yes, but I didn't know our army is this strong."
After a delicious meal, the two friends left the fortress and started walking again.

After some hours they passed trough a plantation.
"What's this soft stuff?" asked Michele.
"It's cotton."
"Oh, I didn't know it grows on trees! My clothes probably come from here."
"Yeah, mine too. This place reminds me of home, with the only difference the plantation of my family is of spices instead of cotton."
"You could've brought some with you. Those beans would have been less tasteless."
"I'll remember it next time."

After some more hours they finally reached Noyyau. From a small hill surrounded by plains they could see all the city: the walls surronding the houses, the Great Pyramids in the distance, the Ishtar gate near the main square, and many little dots moving around in the great capital of the Noyyau Empire. They could see all the animation of a big city and they were amazed by it. As they moved towards it, they started hearing sounds they never heard before: the blacksmiths crafting weapons and tools, the confused voices of a market, the noise of an infinite number of horses, people and wagons in the city and many more.
After some walking they founded an inn and got inside. As they finished eating diner, the owner sat near them. He was a very talkative man.
"So why are you here in the capital?" he started.
"We're looking for a new life." Michele said.
"Then you're in the right place! Noyyau is the city for those who need opportunites, and those who can catch them."
Federico then asked:
"You look like someone who knows... stuff... do you know if there are some of these opportunities in the city?"
"You're a smart boy! I like you! Listen: I've heard a government guy is recruiting Noyyau citizens to become workers in service of the nation."
"What type of workers?"
"I don't know."
"Still, it's something!" said Michele. "I say we toast to luck!"
"Oh, no-no-no, sorry that would be impossible."
"Impossible? Why?"
"The prices of beer and other drinks have been rising for quite some time now. Only the rich can afford them."
"Well then, we should get to our rooms. Tomorrow will be a tiring day." Federico ended.

The next day the two friends left the inn and went to the barracks, where the government envoy was recruiting. The two friends were sent to a big group of people. The government guy then made a small speech:
"Gentlemen, as you've accepted to work for the King and our glorious nation, you are now the Second Worker Squad, leaded by me, Francesco Esposito. Our task is to build infrastructures in the Noyyau territory. This means roads, plantations, farms, mines, hunting camps and wathever else will help the growth of our powerful Empire. You'll be given all the tools you need to work. I'll soon let you know what our first mission is. Thank you."

To be continued...

"On behalf of the House Florentanius the representative of the House to the Royal Court would like to assure their Majesties, the great lords and the people of Noyyau that the rising costs of the fermented beverages are in no way intended to be malicious by House Florentanius; rather they have originated from the rising cost of grains and the difficulty in moving the finished products across the empire. I would also like to remind the great lords that House Florentanius controls less than half of the total produced alcohol in Noyyau and so we cannot unilaterally control the price of these beverages.”

Felix Wilhelm von Caterpillar would like to donate all the resources necessary to build a House of Nobles in the capital, Noyyau.

After talking with His Grace I have decided to take command of our soldiers currently in the woods near Spain. As my sire and his sire before him have won glory in battle, I will crush the Spanish menace and bring peace to our great nation.
I will leave my affairs in the capital to my son, Aaron Greek, who will act in my stead as I command our brave soldiers.

I would like to join as best as I can with a conservative, slightly millitarist house. I dont know where they would probably be based, somewhere with a more traditional outlook? Ill probably write a proper intro when I get more time

You can choose whatever city you like. I suppose that two or more Houses having their stronghold in the same city would make for some "interesting" dynamics :mischief:

Noyyau is the Royal capital, mostly a commercial and erudite city.
Robertia is where most of the troops come from, a military and productive city.
Fiamma is a commercial city, with several plantations and gold mines.
Ringhio is still a frontier town, but is growing to be a productive city. It is our source of Horses.
Wark, Evron and Xerba have been founded only recently, so they are no more than villages for now.

House poke demands that we find where the czech remnants are, as they seem to be "protected" by those iran sissies who can't even raid properly. At least the czech put up a good fight, even if their commanders were dumb.

Our eastern Explorer (RIP) had seen a Czech Galley still alive in the eastern sea, however we do not yet have any navy there so we have no means of pursuing them.
As the eastern coast gets colonized, they will inevitably be eliminated.

Author's suggestion: Play this in the background.

Perfecting the massed archery volley, the Noyyau pushed into Tehran, giving no respite to the Iranian defenders and taking the city less than a day after the walls had been breached.
Contrary to Noyyau habit, the city was not looted and razed, as for the first time the Noyyau found something they deemed worth keeping: the Colosseum, a massive arena where fights and other spectacles could be held, with enough space for thousands of spectators.
Spoiler :

The fighting continued in the rolling hills surrounding the former Iranian capital, most of the carefully terraced Rice cultivations being devastated in the process.
From a passing Pict Explorer, the Noyyau learned that their western neighbours had conquered Sofia, the Bulgarian city-state. No wonder that Bulgarian traders had not been seen recently, contributing to the ongoing booze price crisis.
Spoiler :

Surprisingly, the Latvians decided to settle in the harsh northern wilderness. Maybe they had hopes to develop caribou herding to sustain themselves?
Spoiler :

The Spanish kept sending unsupported units to test the Noyyau. When a group of Axemen had enough and chased them, they spotted the Spanish armada, probably waiting for the Noyyau to step closer. The Axemen quickly retreated to the safety of the woods.
Spoiler :

In Noyyau, House Caterpillar sponsored the construction of a grandiose House of Nobles, where the High Caste Houses could meet on neutral grounds.
It soon gained the nickname of “Treasury” for its lavish decorations and the tendency of the nobles to try and outdo each other in luxury.
Spoiler :

Life in Xerba was the hard but honest life of a frontier settlement. No one expected savage raiders to come from the sea.
Probably expecting no resistance from more civilized people, the barbarians attacked without much strategy or coordination. The superiority of Noyyau discipline quickly ended their threat.
What the Noyyau did not yet have, however, was a naval presence in the eastern great sea.
Spoiler :

A possible solution for the Alcohol crisis came from an unexpected source: Pakistani traders approached the Noyyau embassy in Caledonii, requesting permission to acquire the famed Noyyau booze. In return, they offered not only money, but also leaves of a stimulating plant that they called Tobacco.
The envoys were quick to grant them passage, hoping that more exports would bring more money to the Kingdom, and maybe even help drive down the prices.
Spoiler :

After reorganizing and recuperating in Tehran, Noyyau forces marched onwards to the next Iranian city, Isfahan.
Spoiler :

The Spanish kept sending their soldiers on suicidal missions, but the local Noyyau commanders had grown accustomed to the situation, and saw no real need to move, despite the continuosly arriving reinforcements.
Spoiler :

The barbarian raiders came to close to the shore, and met the Xerbian Archers' deadly volleys. With most of the crew dead, their ship was carried away by the currents to the open sea, never to be seen again.
Spoiler :

Radical thinkers among the scribes, knowing about the growing malcontent among the high nobles, thought about how to make the most of the situation. Should they offer their support to the dying King and his young Prince, or to the Houses vying for power? Some even suggested that they should simply declare themselves independent of political squabbles, their services necessary and fundamental for the constantly growing Kingdom.
Meanwhile, the elder scribes dreamt of a day when culture would be ubiquitous, scrolls easily obtainable, and a Library present in every city of a vast empire.
Spoiler :

With uncertainty and danger growing in recent times, many people, especially among the lower castes, turned to the Shamans for guidance, or just reassurance.
The inhabitants of Ringhio were especially afraid for their future, as the rise of the Malagasy evoked fears of another invasion, rumors of the Latvian devastation near Robertia once again circulating unchecked.
It is no surprise then that Ringhio's most revered Shaman, Kojiki, one day claimed to have been visited by the protector spirit of the Kingdom itself, Reki, with visions of a bright future for the people, if they would properly venerate the spirits, and behave as civilized people should.
Kojiki's preaching found traction among the people of Ringhio, as most of what he said did not really differ that much from the traditional Noyyau beliefs.
As more and more people came to listen to Kojiki, his way of worship came to be known as Shinto, a word that Kojiki claimed had the meaning of “Way of the spirits”, and had been revealed to him by the spirits themselves.

Spoiler :

The King is dead! Long live the King!

With the passing away of our beloved (and who says otherwise is a traitor that should be beheaded) King, the brewing dissent is ready to explode into full blown anarchy!

That is, the time has arrived for you to decide what our new civics will be.
The young Prince, soon to be crowned King (if nothing untoward happens), is young but not naive, and has realized that he can't have his father's dispotic power, so he is willing to concede something in exchange for stability and the growth of the kingdom.

Before I can write an update about that, however, I need to start said revolution, and for that I need to know what civics you'd like!
So this is not a Story update. This is purely gameplay choices you need to make for me to go on.

Here are our current civics:
Spoiler :

Here are the Rule choices.
The Prince would like if Patrician or Bureaucracy were chosen.
Spoiler :

Here is the Society choice. Do we want to keep Caste, which has a good :hammers: bonus but a hefty GP penalty, or do we become feudal? That +1 :( is not an issue (as Caste also has it, so nothing would change).
The Prince would prefer if our society became Feudal (to get rid of the -33% GP rate).
Spoiler :

Here's the Economy choice: do we want to maintain the institution of Slavery, basing our economy on hard labor, or do we switch to Coinage, making currency the main motor of economy?
We have one Gold near Fiamma, and another (yet to be mined) near newly founded Evron.
Silver, while not fundamental, could be obtained by building a fort (or a city) north of Iran, but that requires to finish off the Iranians first.
The Prince actually has no opinion on this, Slavery is viable as long as the Slave Market building does not obsolete (and that will happen with an Industrial Era tech, so a long way in the future).
Spoiler :

The Military is not really a choice at all, as Vassalage is hands down the best option we have at the moment. Plus the Shanty Town, when it will be unlocked, will make our cities explode (demographically speaking).
Spoiler :

Religion is an interesting dilemma. Prophets has few but positive traits, countering (but not completely) Castes' GP penalty, and making Missionaries super cheap.
Divine Cult has another penalty on GP (so it is not compatible with Caste, as that would kill our GP generation), and reduces :gold: empire-wide, but it also reduces war weariness (albeit not a serious problem for now) and increases the capital's gold (our main income generator at the moment).
The Prince would lean towards Prophets, more because it seems more in line with what Shinto is about.
Spoiler :

The last choice, Welfare, is quite important: do we want to prioritize building construction in cities, or Worker actions in the field?
The Prince had no preference, he'd actually want both, but even the Prince can't have everything...
Spoiler :

The House of Giacola

Spoiler :

Motto: "The system must continue to function."

The House of Giacola is known as the noble house without any nobles. Its roots come from a scribe who became an aid of a chieftain of the Noyyau due to the warlord's inability to read. The scribe had many children and so used the personal wealth he had amassed to get them positions within the other noble houses. Within several generations the House of Giacola developed into a de facto bureacracy within the Noyyau empire. Members of the House of Giacola work as judges, quartermasters, spies and of course scribes. The power still lies within "the noble" caste, but the House has quickly become a potent political voice within the kingdom. They do not currently have an official seat on the king's council, but they are important enough that the King often listens to and incorporates their opinions into his decisions. The House, due to its fragmented nature has a system of unwritten rules for a myriad of situations, with the current head being the arbitrator for special cases. Punishment for breaking these rules is often swift, and involves a very hungry dire wolf. The current matriarch of the House of Giacola currently resides in the capitol, but the House's members are spread everywhere. The snake is their symbol because of its connection to the Orithmos, the snakes that drag the stars, the moon and other planets endlessly around Earth. Their work is similarly endless and requires as much patience. The House of Giacola does not support the system that is "best" but rather the one that is most stable.
